ESOL 0596: Advanced ESOL for College Success

What is ESOL 0596?
ESOL is English for Speakers of Other Languages. ESOL 0596 is an English class for advanced ESL/ESOL or bilingual students who want to improve their English skills in preparation for college classes. The focus will be on English listening, speaking, reading, writing and vocabulary skills that are needed in college-level English classes.

Who is eligible to take ESOL 0596 (Advanced ESOL for College Success)?

Any student whose Accuplacer test recommendation is ENG 0750 or higher (Reading and Sentence Skills scores of 69 and higher). Note: All students must meet the general admissions requirements outlined on page 10 in the CNM 2007-2009 catalog.

Who is not eligible to take ESOL 0596 (ESOL for College Success)?

Students in the U.S. on Temporary Visitors’ visas are not eligible for admission to CNM college classes. Students in the U.S. on an expired visa of any kind are not eligible for admission to CNM college classes. Students who do not meet the CNM general admissions requirements are not eligible (see page 10 of the CNM 2007-2009 catalog).

How can I register for ESOL 0596 (Advanced ESOL for College Success)?

1. If you are a CNM student now and you don’t have a CNM ID card, visit the ID office, room 109
in the Student Services Center on Main Campus (or TW Hall on Montoya Campus), to get your ID card. Take a copy of your current class schedule and a picture ID.

2. Submit an application form. You can do this in person at the Student Services Center on Main
Campus (or at TW Hall on Montoya Campus). Include your CNM ID number on your form. Note: The application form asks for a social security number, but you do not have to have a social security number to complete the application.

3. Take the Accuplacer Test. You can take the test in the Student Services Center at Main
Campus (or TW Hall at Montoya Campus). After the test, you will receive a paper with recommended classes. You can take ESOL 0596 if you receive a score of 69 and above on your Sentence Skills and Reading tests.

4. Register for the class. You can register by phone (224-4893), online (www.cnm.edu) or in
person in the Student Services Center on Main Campus (or TW Hall at Montoya Campus). 5. Pay for your class by the payment deadline. (Note: This may be within 24 hours of registration.)

How much will it cost to take ESOL 0596 (Advanced ESOL for College Success)?
ESOL 0596 is tuition-free for New Mexico residents in the CNM district. To find out if you qualify as a New Mexico resident, see the residency classification information on pages 18 & 19 of the CNM 2007-2009 catalog, or contact the CNM Admissions Office (224-3160). If you are admitted to CNM as a nonresident, and register for ESOL 0596 only, you’ll pay the $40 registration fee, plus $30.00 for the class ($70.00 total). You’ll also need to purchase your textbook (approximately $35). You may be eligible for financial aid. See pages 21-23 of the CNM 2007-2009 catalog, or contact the Financial Aid office at 224-3090.
