KANATA NORTH NEWS Marianne Wilkinson Councillor, Kanata North OC TRANSPO STRIKE

The vote ordered by the federal Minister of Labour, Rona Ambrose, will have taken place the day before this paper is distributed. Hopefully the union will vote to accept the offer and the strike will be over. If not, additional steps will need to be taken to get the buses rolling again. Check the City or OC Transpo websites regularly for suggestions in dealing with the strike. The Minister has also asked the Canada Industrial Relations Board to determine if there should be an order under the Act that would require the continuation of services to the extent necessary to prevent an immediate and serious danger to the safety or health of the public. The deadline to submit a written explanation of why you think that this obligation is not being met during the current work stoppage by the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 279 is today, Jan. 9 at 5 pm. Submissions must provide specific details in support of the statements being made, be limited to the issues of safety and health, and say why they are not met by the work stoppage. Please note that submissions will be transmitted to the City and the Union for review and comment. Send your comments to the Canada Industrial Relations Board - by email at octranspo-atu@cirb-ccri.gc.ca or by fax at 613-941-4461.

Christmas trees will be collected next week. Please ensure that there are no decorations on the trees and do not put them into a plastic bag. Stick them up in the snow at the side of the road for ease of collection. You can put greeting cards and gift wrap into your black box except for foil gift wrap, ribbons and bows which are not accepted.

Would you like to better understand the city planning process? If so consider attending sessions given by the City to help residents deal with land-use issues. There are two half-day core courses describing the legislative and policy base, how documents are amended and how to make an application. You must take the Primer 1 Course first. You can then take elective courses such as urban design. Sign up for the first course on Jan. 17 or Jan. 19 at City Hall. Register before Jan. 14 at ottawa.ca/residents/planning/primer or send your questions to intro@ottawa.ca. There is no charge for this session.

Sign up for the City’s Winter Parking e-Alerts to receive an email each time an overnight parking restriction is in effect and when it has been lifted. Go to www.ottawa.ca/winterparking for this service. Remember it is illegal and creates a safety hazard if you push or dump snow onto the roadway. Also do drive with care during winter conditions, watch out for cyclists and pedestrians and keep our community safe.

Urbandale will be starting the preparation of a communications strategy for the lands north of the Beaverpond and Kizell Drain this year. If you’re interested in being involved in helping me to review and comment on the strategy, please contact my office.
