Scholarships Available in 2011 FOR AVIATION/ AEROSPACE STUDIES (Application deadline is July 18, 2011) The Aero Club of Southern California, in order to assist air-minded young people in pursuit of their education, is offering 2011 scholarship grants. 1. Grants up to $2,500 each are available to current high school students who plan to pursue studies in aviation or aerospace, and 2. Grants up to $5,000 each are available to students currently pursuing aviation/ aerospace studies in a college, university or nationally accredited technical school. Applicants must demonstrate intent to pursue a career
in aviation or aerospace, must have now and maintain a 3.0 GPA and must be full time students now and when the scholarship will be used.

California Wing Conference 2011 will be held this year at the Oakland Airport Hilton Aug 26-28, 2011 The address of the Hilton is 1 Hegenberger Rd. The 2011 CAP Annual Conference & National Board EARLY REGISTRATION is officially off and running. This years Conference will be held in Louisville, Kentucky, August 18 - 20, 2011. Dont forget to register online before midnight June 5th to receive your special discounted Early Conference Registration rate of only $99. As an extra incentive for registering during this early registration period, your name will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a free laptop computer at the conference. This year were having two new pre-conference courses. The first one is for cadets and seniors who want to participate in the exciting national CyberPatriot computer network defense competition that one of our CAP units recently won. The second new pre-conference course will teach our members how to operate the Geospatial Information Interoperability Exploitation Portable (GIIEP) systems that all of our state level National Guard units have. This year we are also having a special reception Thursday night for all first time Annual Conference attendees. This will give you the opportunity to meet and talk with me and other CAP senior leaders. My staff and I look forward to meeting each of you and extending our appreciation for your membership, service and dedication to our organization and the nation. The 2011 CAP Annual Conference & National Board will also conclude my tenure as your National Commander. Please make plans to attend so I can personally thank you for your service. Breaking the boots in will make a huge difference when you suddenly go from wearing your boots 12 hours a month, to 12 hours a day. Dont end up with the encampment medic by night two asking for moleskin, band-aids and medical waivers to wear your sneakers during activities. Should you be put on sneaker waiver, expect it to result in points off during daily uniform inspections. Your uniform will look sloppy, your appearance will suffer. Wow all that because I didnt break in my new combat boots? Yes. Dont be that cadet. Youve been warned. The CAWG website has a two page document written by our own Captain David MacGregor about boot safety. Please review this document and take its information seriously. This could make or break your encampment experience. If you are unable to complete a full 80% of the encampment because you are unable to participate in mandatory activities due to poor foot health and condition, you will not get credit for the encampment. Dont take the risk. You need an encampment to become a cadet officer. Your equipment packing list is available on the CAWG website. In following the tune of boot safety, increase the number of socks you bring by at least 50%. If they request one pair for each day of the encampment, you should pack 1 extra pair for every 2 days. An 8-day encampment should warrant packing 12 pair of socks. Dont count on having time to wash your socks, or have a pair dry in time. Just pack extra. Your staff will teach you how to fold the socks so that they smile. The fact you packed extra pairs of socks and your feet are fine should make you smile. It should go without saying that you should probably change your underwear as often as you change your socks. If your socks are getting too sweaty and swampy because of this change in climate for you, it is likely affecting all your sweat-able swampy parts. If youre soaking through your t-shirts under your blouses, change them every day. Your neighbor may not tell you youre beginning to attract flies, but dont take the risk. Stay clean, stay dry, stay healthy. Now that weve discussed the outside of the body in extreme climate, lets move to the inside of the body. If you normally are relatively sedentary, inside an air conditioned home, you will experience discomfort with the long hours outside in the middle of June. You will get dehydrated before you even realize it. If you are thirsty, your body is already dehydrated. Your staff should instruct you to drink whenever you have a moment to rest. Drink while in transit to another activity.

The most apparent symptoms of dehydration are recognizing you are thirsty (you already are very dehydrated, your brain acknowledging the dehydration is a very delayed reaction), your lips are getting chapped, dry or cracked, and your urine darkens. When you are drinking enough water, you are not thirsty, your lips do not need artificial lubrication, and your urine output has a pale yellow tint to it. Dark urine is unacceptable. Dark, cloudy or painful urination must seek medical attention immediately. Other signs of dehydration in more severe forms are low-grade headaches, stomach cramping and constipation. Your body needs a certain amount of water to function properly. You will suddenly be baking in the hot sun for a week straight. You need at least twice as much water to drink to maintain good organ health during this time. Water is essential for survival. Hate the taste of water? Buy powdered iced tea packets (Lipton, Arizona Iced Tea, Crystal Light) to lightly flavor the water to entice you to drink more. *DO NOT* substitute something else for what you should be drinking in water. Do not drink coffee or soda in the hopes of this hydrating you, it does the opposite. Caffeine is a diuretic, makes you urinate more frequently, and therefore dehydrates you faster. Just because it is liquid, doesnt mean it is quenching. Just Water, but if you must, flavor packets will help you drink more water more often. Last but not least, lets talk about protecting your largest organ. The largest organ of the body, is the epidermis, the skin. We have skin covering every inch of our bodies. Just because much of our skin may be covered with our BDUs, does not mean it is not safe from the UV rays of the sun. Wear Your Sunscreen.
So you might end up looking like these guys, but please protect yourselves as much as possible throughout the week.
Apply sunscreen first thing in the morning, and during every barracks break where you know you will be outside again. Ask your TAC officers to carry spare sunscreen bottles (minimum SPF 30) to share with the flight. Be diligent about protecting your face, front and back of neck, ears, top of chest, arms and hands. These are the most exposed areas. Wear. Your. Sunscreen. Maintain proper personal hygiene at this encampment. If your hygiene skills are lacking in the regular world, they will become apparent very quickly at an encampment. You will be spending 24 hours a day, with the same people. They will begin to notice a difference in their comrades if personal hygiene standards are not being met. A cadet may tell a staff member, and the staff member should express concern for a lack of observance of personal grooming and hygiene standards. You are all old enough to know how to wash thoroughly. Not only is hygiene a courtesy to those around you, it is a matter of your health. Dirty unwashed parts of the body will become irritated with bacteria and prolonged periods of time with this bacteria will lead to skin irritations, rashes, etc. You will need to seek medical attention if this happens. Again, dont be that cadet. Safety is everyones responsibility. Preparation is key to observing these safety procedures. Your health is paramount. Safety of yourself and others is paramount. Lastly, everyone must report safety violations of any kind to their flight staff or safety office of the encampment. Chain of command does not come into play when something dangerous has occurred. It is everyones job to stay safe and make sure everyone else does too. Do not hesitate to report anything you know, or even suspect, is unsafe and could cause harm to themselves or those around you. Safety is everyones responsibility.

How it Works
The first two rounds of competition are open to all registered teams. After those two rounds, top scoring teams (rougnly the highest 25%) are invited to take part in a thrid on-line round.
The final competition will take place at AFAs CyberFutures Conference at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center, National Harbor, Md. March 22-24, 2012.
