CAPTAIN SHOUTS FORE!
The trip to Krugersdorp was well worthwhile to all of those who avoid this game, you dont know what you are missing! I always nd the course tough, with holes that require a draw off the tee (I cant even do that with a pencil!) and others that need a fade. The course always gets nailed by frost, which makes it a bit shorter at this time of year, but it is always a serious challenge. As usual it was in good condition and we were welcomed with open arms. They even gave us a discount on the xed fees we had agreed, because the eld was so small. Well negotiated Doug Watson! A big thank you to all those who took part in the Highveld Trophy and helped to retain the Trophy. In recent years it has been the host club that wins it most often, but we managed to sneak past Northerns and Easterns assisted by having 2 no-shows! Now for the Lowveld Quadrangular, although we could be challenged there as some of our stalwarts are not going, because of the rugby at FNB Stadium on the Saturday. Anyone who would like to go, please contact Dobri and get a place on the tour. Whilst on the subject of tours, I would like to thank Dobri for his efforts over the last 2 years, but he has been forced to resign as Away Tours Coordinator due to work pressure. (Its nice to see someone doing well in this present economic climate!) One of his last actions was to send out a questionnaire on the away tours, which is intended to nd out why less people are touring and to allow the new coordinator to make the tours more attractive. Please ll the questionnaire in (it will not even t a ke 5 m i n u t e s o f yo u r t i m e ) ESPECIALLY IF YOU DO NOT TOUR!!!!! It is aimed more at those who do not tour, than the handful who are always on the away games. I believe that you make more friends on the away games than you ever will at the monthly games and consequently you get a lot more fun out of Nomads, as a whole. (Ask the Combi Boys!!) I am looking forward to the Parkview game, where Alec Saunders gets his 500 game badge and when we shall have both the Gauteng 500 gamers (Ken Blake is the other one) playing at the back of the eld. The National Chairman is coming up for the event and will also present Brian Thorpe (who no longer plays) with his 50 year tie. We have arranged it so that Alec is in the last 4-ball, nishing in front of the clubhouse, so please give him a rousing welcome as he completes the game!
welcome to the B Division. Thank you for your hospitality Krugersdorp. Welcome to inductee Craig Edwards, he promptly won the A Division and Saunders Sizzle and not yet 36 he has helped to bring down our average age by 0.12 of a year. We wish you many enjoyable and happy and participating years of Nomads camaraderie. Congratulations to Alec Saunders on playing his 499.5th game (more about that next month!), to Andrew Mostert on receiving his 200 game badge and to Ian Lamb on being awarded his 10-year tie. What a pity that a 35, a 20, a 15 and a 5-year tie recipient either didnt come out to get their ties or couldnt be bothered to stay for the prizegiving. Hopefully they will be at the next games prizegiving! Someone needs to remind our Starters that we (the Senior Golfers) now play of the Senior Tees; this was forgotten again at Krugersdorp. Many thanks to Nic du Toit for a quick and amusing fines session but what happened to the Group fine?
November. We need a team of 20 for the Lowveld trip and it is always a great weekend for wives and children to go GET WELL/CASUALTIES on an Away Trip. The whole party (i.e. golfers, wives and children) is going to Bill Bailey is progressing nicely, albeit be booked into the Karula Hotel in slowly, after his surgery and it was great White River. The rst penalty of two shots off your handicap has been implemented for those members who have still not put in their scores for the Glendower game, it is quite possible that an even greater penalty could be implemented in the future, if this is not rectied immediately. There are a further few of you who still have to put in scores for the Kyalami, the Glenvista and/or the Krugersdorp game. Remember that you have been warned and its in writing now. The Andrew Mentis Golf Day, played at Modderfontein, was a superb afternoon but how sad it was to see a total days eld of just 148 players. I can remember when we had elds of over 200 players and we had to switch on cars headlights behind the 18th green
thing of all was that only 13 of the 48 Gauteng Nomads, inducted from between 2008 and 2012, even bothered to enter and play. Come on you young guys, this is your obligatory 13th annual Nomads golf day! There has been a hiccough in the booking for our Roodepoort game so please diarise NOW that the game will be played on Wednesday the 17th October. WHAT IF... A GOLFERS QUANDRY
What if you were playing in the Club Matchplay Championship Tournament Finals and the match was tied at the end of 17 holes. You had the honour and hit your ball a modest 250m to the middle at Kensington Golf Club, to bring in the of the fairway, leaving a simple six iron last few fourballs. However the saddest to the pin. Your opponent then hits his
ball, lofting it deep into the woods to the right of the fairway. Being the golfing gentleman that you are, you help your opponent look for his ball. Just before the permitted five minute search period ends, your opponent says, Go ahead and hit your second shot and if I dont find it in time Ill concede the match. You hit your ball, landing it on the green, stopping about ten feet from the pin. About the time your ball comes to rest, you hear your opponent exclaim from deep in the wood, I found it! The second sound you hear is a click, the sound of a club striking a ball and the ball comes sailing out of the woods and lands on the green, stopping no more than 150mm from the hole. Now the real what if in this story What if you had your opponents ball in your pocket?
