Specter Universal Tactical Thigh Holster – Just what the doctor ordered.
By: Sal Palma
pizza and the iPhone can do better than that! Well, we have and it is called a Specter Universal Tactical Thigh Holster. I haven’t worn a holster for combative purposes since I left the military a number of years ago. My current critical holster requirement is conceal carry and I’ve settled on that quite some time ago. However, I’m constantly reviewing new platforms and accessories that come down the pipe, and finding a suitable tactical holster is next to impossible, exhausting and needlessly expensive. One day, I reached out to Steve at Battlecloth with a requirement I thought he could fill and after exchanging a couple of e-mails he suggested the Specter Universal Tactical Thigh Holster. Steve indicated he owned one and was very pleased with it, so I decided to give it a try. I don’t know of many people who shoot professionally, or active enthusiasts, that don’t have a stash of holsters piled up somewhere. It just seems to be the unavoidable plight of “pistoleros” around the world. Equally sad is that of the twenty, or so, holsters one accumulates you never seem to use more than two. God, I hate that! A bombastic display of inefficiency; surely a civilization that created

The UTTH is basically a trifold panel constructed from 4 layers of heavy duty ballistic nylon and an outer shell finished from 2 layers of 1000 Denier Cordura nylon. The panel functions exactly like a trifold wallet and is covered with hook and loop panels to hold the trifold securely around the weapon and accessory. It’s this ingenious approach that affords the flexibility to make the Specter holster platform and accessory agnostic. In my testing, I went out of my way to challenge the UTTH.

The only weapon / accessory combination that challenged the UTTH operating envelope is depicted in Figure 2. The SIG P220 with a rail adapter and Insight M6X pushed the outer limits of the holster, mostly due to the rail adapter. Had the sample P220 been a railed version I would not have experienced an issue. Suffice it to say, I am extremely comfortable with Specter’s universal claim - I was trying to

find an HK MK-23 to test – just to be a dork but none of my usual sources had one available. I’d venture to say one could successfully holster a Micro Uzi in Specter’s UTTH; you can be assured that any railed or non-railed large frame pistol will fit the holster, and that includes attached accessories. Universality notwithstanding, there are numerous other features that make the UTTH an exceptional product, and they are worth mentioning. The Specter thigh holster is attached to a vertically adjustable quick disconnect (QD) hanger strap. It suspends the holster below the belt line. The hanger strap allows about 6 inches of vertical adjustment, which allows me to get the holster just below my load bearing equipment. Specter uses 3 layers of heavy duty 2-inch SCUBA webbing along with a 2-inch side release buckle, which allows for rapid removal or attachment of the holster without having to remove your belt. Specter also includes 2 adjustable 2-inch leg straps and a utility pouch located on the leading edge of the holster. The pouch can be used as a magazine, light or multi-tool pouch.

Figure 5 Hanger Strap All-in-all, Specter’s Universal Tactical Thigh Holster is built solidly, if not overkill. Simply stated, it is a tank. Every effort was made to ensure accessibility without compromising retention. When used in conjunction with a lanyard weapon, it is inconceivable that you’ll ever experience losing your firearm – short of an I.E.D. blast, I suppose. You can run with it, crawl with it, fight and jump with it, and possibly even sleep with it. More importantly in these austere times, when every penny counts, you won’t find a better solution to your holster problems. Specter’s Universal Tactical Thigh Holster may very well be the last tactical thigh holster you’ll ever need. -SP For pricing and additional details visit Specter.
