"I hear voices." Jacy spoke quietly from behind him. "Sounds like they're coming from there,” Jim Kirk replied just as quietly as he pointed to the study. "Come on," he ordered them.

CURTAIN opens to "Let me get directly to the point," Veldt said in a harsh voice. "Your recent studies have become dangerous to my mission." "Please do that as I didn't know you're on a mission, Miss Veldt." Jarl spoke as he felt a cold suspicion growing in him, "and what studies are you referring to?" Of course, he thought. A student in one of my classes at the University would be the easiest way to keep an eye on me. It looked like he was right to send his backups to Kirk earlier today. "Doctor Olseen, I believe we both know what I'm talking about." Before Jarl's astonished eyes, his student changed into what looked very much like a large and gross Earth slug. Her voice came out of the creature. "We're going on a trip Doctor. Your niece is already secured for transport." As she spoke, they brought in Ruth with a rough grasp and a threatening growl from a Klingon. It did not surprise Jarl to see a Klingon in his home holding his niece. It did surprise Ruth though.

She became even more frightened when she caught sight of the monstrous slug. She wanted to faint but knew she dared not and finally just looked at her uncle in stupefied bewilderment. "We are prisoners of professional villains, Ruth," he told her dryly, "villains who are nasty, vicious, brutal, merciless, and proud of it." While Jarl spoke, Jim Kirk and his roommates were walking down the dock. Jim suddenly halted. "That's strange," he said, pointing to the boat where Ruth lived, "the hatch's open." As Jim climbed aboard and his roommates followed him, the lights automatically came on in the salon. The scene was demoniac havoc. Something overturned the chairs and tables. The carpet glistened with what might be slime. Jim noticed a foul and nauseating smell. "I hear voices." Jacy spoke quietly from behind him. "Sounds like they're coming from there,” Jim replied just as quietly as he pointed to the study. "Come on," he ordered them. As Jim pushed open the door to the study, Rico heard the hum of a transporter beam. Rico could see Jim's gaze was steady and undaunted. The two of them were the only ones to see a Klingon holding Ruth, and a massive and ugly slug pointing a Klingon disrupter at Professor Olseen. Then the four they were watching vanished in the sparkle of the transporter. All that remained for their roommates as they crowded in, was a lingering odor. "Smells like a China Town's butcher's shop on a hot afternoon in here." Dougg observed clinically. Rico could only feel the hot anger bubbling up in her at the sight of the Klingon. "I feel we are in very considerable danger," Teed suddenly said urgently and quietly. "There are Klingons here." Jacy looked at him in astonishment as a Klingon disrupter suddenly enveloped the five of them. It was after ten when Security called Lady Morghan of her Starfleet meeting. Federation Security was waiting outside the door to talk with her. "Nothing more than a duty visit." Lady Morghan told herself, "Just the usual discussion of responsibilities and decisions." Security instead told her about the disappearance of five cadets and her husband. "I'm Officer Karin Winnard, Lady Morghan. Federation Security received a report from Starfleet Academy five cadets hadn't reported in that had signed out as visiting your husband." The Security Officer said to her emotionless, "When we went to your home, we found furniture overturned, and the floor covered with slime." "Slime?" Lady Morghan asked, trying not to envision her hardwood floor covered in slime.

"Yes, we took samples and then made arrangements for clean up. We did not find the cadets nor your husband." "Thank you for the cleanup arrangements, Officer Winnard," Lady Morghan replied, "Our niece, Ruth, was also home, is she all right?" "We didn't know about your niece," the Officer said, "we didn't see her. Were the cadets there before you left?" "No." "Has there been anything unusual lately," the Security Officer was asking her. Lady Morghan knew she was going to have to tell about the calls and threats. "A few months ago we started receiving calls to our home. Once there were forty-one calls alone between midnight and morning. Often she would also badger and terrorize me while my husband was teaching. Overall, we received hundreds of phone calls, and several dozen threats." "She?" the officer asked. "Yes, the voice was female." "Do you know who she is," the officer then asked. "Yes, a student in my husband's music class at the University." "Why didn't you report this," the officer snapped. "We did." Lady Morghan snapped back. "Security traced the calls to her." She immediately regretted snapping at the officer. She could tell the officer was worried, and only trying to do her job. A man of Jarl's statue, his niece, and five Starfleet cadets, one of them Jim Kirk, all missing apparently together, was serious business indeed. "My husband mentioned at supper some concerns," Lady Morghan said more softly, "which he said he wanted to talk about with Jim Kirk." "Did he mention anything else?" the Officer asked. "Yes, my husband has been doing some research into his theory there was some event tampering, as he called it, here on Earth by Klingons or Klingon agents. Jarl said he sent Jim Kirk a backup of his work this morning." The officer looked at her then flipped her communicator open as she walked a couple feet away from her. "Winnard here with Lady Morghan." Lady Morghan heard the officer say. "Professor Olseen's niece is also missing. Lady Morghan says she was at home when she left. She also said that at

dinner tonight, Professor Olseen thought Klingons were involved. Apparently he sent this morning a copy of his work to Kirk." There was a pause while the officer listened to the response that Lady Morghan could not hear. "Affirmative," she heard the officer answer, who then walked back to her. "I'm your escort home Lady Morghan. Your place should be cleaned up by now. We're also going to post two guards just outside your front door." A few minutes later, Lady Morghan walked into her home office. She closed the door firmly behind her. She crossed to the bar, opened the freezer, pulled out a bottle, and poured herself out a shot of Kahlua. The liquor warmed her. She finished her drink, then started the hot tub, while she removed her clothes. Thinking she would lie in the hot tub and drink colder Kahlua, she went to replenish her glass. A hot tear flowed down her cheek. "Losing Jarl would be the hardest thing I've ever had to do." Lady Morghan thought as she stepped into the tub. Lady Morghan knew she could learn to live without Jarl if there was no alternative. She also knew she could be engaging, single-minded and determined if necessary. Stepping out of the tub, she thought a little physical activity with the weights would prove a mundane but comforting therapy. While working out, she remembered how she thought her arguments with Jarl, and his opinions, astonishingly stimulating. Jarl's regard was always kindly, though Lady Morghan would not categorize Jarl as a kindly man. After bathing, and while drying herself off, Lady Morghan muttered, "Fate having brought us together surely meant for us to remain that way." By the bed Lady Morghan saw her favorite photo of Jarl, sitting casually in a colorful Madras shirt, slightly smiling. He was wearing his sailing sunglasses. Standing at the window, Lady Morghan suddenly realized she was simply numb and as cold as ice inside. She was staring into the night fog. She found herself praying that "there will be sunshine later." She then discovered to her surprise that her eyes had again filled with tears. Tears this time for both Jarl and Ruth. "Jarl, I need you to be here," she thought. "Now I want to talk to you. I need you." As she wept quietly, her hard shell of self-control broke up. "Part of me is yours forever. There'll always be a part of you inside me,” Lady Morghan whispered. Now all she could think about was how they had met. How Jarl had come into her life. They had so inevitably fallen deeply in love.
