Advocates see parallels
between two movements
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
Are there parallels between the LGBT
and immigrants rights movements?
A new campaign that Equality Maryland
and CASA de Maryland unveiled late last
month that seeks to garner additional
support for the states same-sex marriage
law among Latinos and in-state tuition for
undocumented immigrants among LGBT
voters ahead of two referenda on the
issues suggests that these issues share
common threads. Carrie Evans, executive
director of Equality Maryland, noted
during the Aug. 28 press conference where
she and other advocates formally unveiled
the Familia es Familia Maryland initiative
that her organization must speak up for
what is right and what is fair.
A majority of Latinos in Maryland
support marriage equality for same-sex
couples, she told the Blade in a follow-
up interview. A Hart Research Associates
survey in July that shows 54 percent of
Marylanders would vote for the same-
sex marriage law in Novembers mirrors
an April poll that the National Council of
La Raza commissioned that indicates 54
percent of Latinos support nuptials for
gays and lesbians. A Gonzales Research
and Marketing survey in January noted
that 48 percent of Maryland voters also
support the states Dream Act. Equality
Maryland is working to ensure that a
majority of LGBT communities of Maryland
support Question 4.
The long-standing partnership between
Basic Rights Oregon and Causa, a
statewide immigrant advocacy group,
provided the blueprint upon which
Equality Maryland and CASA de Maryland
collaborated with the Latino GLBT
History Project and other organizations
to launch the Familia es Familia Maryland
campaign. Jeana Frazzini, executive
director of Basic Rights Oregon, told the
Blade that her organizations work with
Causa stems from campaigns against anti-
gay, anti-immigrant and anti-choice ballot
initiatives in Oregon.
Pretty early on the communities were
put in a position to rely on one another, to
share lessons learned and provide mutual
support, she said.
Frazzini noted that what she described
as strong relationships between staffers at
the two organizations have subsequently
grown into broader commitments in our
missions and in our programmatic work.
Causa is among the organizations that
continue to advise Basic Rights Oregon
on how to pursue marriage rights for
same-sex couples in the state. Francisco
Lopez, the groups executive director,
told the Blade that nuptials for gays and
lesbians has become one of Causas core
organizational values.
We support each other politically.
We support each other in terms of
mobilization. We support each others
attempts for fundraising. So what we did
is to include marriage equality as a value
of our organization, he said.
The Human Rights Campaign, the
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force
and Immigration Equality are among the
national LGBT advocacy groups that have
spoken out in support of the inclusion of
a bill that would allow gays and lesbians
to sponsor their foreign-born partners
and children for immigration under a
comprehensive immigration reform
package. These groups have also spoken
out against Arizonas controversial
Senate Bill 1070 designed to deter
undocumented immigrants from entering
the state from Mexico.

Faith Temple pastor opened
home of 24 years for Bible
study, church events
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
Rev. Robert Michael Vanzant, 59, the
outreach pastor for D.C.s Faith Temple,
a Christian church with a special outreach
to the African-American LGBT community,
says hes doing his very best to keep his
spirits up at a time of need.
His Northeast Washington home of 24
years is in foreclosure and the Bank of
America, which holds the mortgage, is
taking steps to have him evicted.
Ive spent my entire life serving God and
my community, Vanzant said in an open
letter to the bank that he released last week.
When I became disabled and my income
dropped, I reached out and asked for a
modication so that I could continue to pay
my mortgage. You denied my request and
set me up for foreclosure and eviction.
Last week, friends and associates at Faith
Temple joined the D.C. anti-foreclosure
group Occupy Our Homes in staging
a protest demonstration on his behalf
outside the Bank of Americas loan ofce
on U Street, N.W., just off 14th Street.
The protest organizers say Bank of
America appears to have violated a city
law that requires lenders to enter into a
mediation process with borrowers who
have fallen behind on their mortgage.
An ofcial with the city agency that
administers the mediation program said its
intent is to determine whether a borrower
is qualied for one of nearly a dozen
federal programs that encourage and
in some cases pay lenders to modify the
terms of a mortgage to lower the monthly
payments and enable a mortgage holder
to keep the home.
Vanzant has served as a pastor at Faith
Temple since the church was founded in
1982. He said he moved into his house on
the 5500 block of 5th Street, N.E., in 1988 as
a tenant before buying the semi-detached
townhouse in 2003 from his landlord.
Isaiah Poole, a longtime member of the
church and friend of Vanzants, said Vanzant
has long opened his house for church
functions, including Bible study classes.
Poole said Vanzant also has opened his
home as a shelter for people in need.
Vanzant told the Blade his problems
began in 2008 when he became disabled
due to illness and was later approved for
disability status. He said that although he
was no longer able to keep his full-time day
job with the Metro transit agency, for the
next year and a half he managed to continue
making his mortgage payments through a
disability insurance policy he had and later
through Social Security disability benets.
I called the bank in early 2009 and said
my income was going to change soon and
I needed to talk about streamlining my
mortgage, he said. According to Vanzant,
bank ofcials told him there were no
mortgage assistance programs available for
people who were current on their payments.
He said he next contacted several
mortgage counseling organizations that
promoted themselves as experts in helping
people at risk for foreclosure. One of the
organizations advised him to withhold his
mortgage payments and place the money in
a savings or escrow account, with the intent
of working out a mortgage modication
plan with the bank at a later date.
And so thats what I did, he said.
But by early 2010, Bank of America began
foreclosure proceedings and refused to
discuss any mortgage adjustment options
that had been widely publicized in the
media and by the Obama administration.
I received something from the law
ofce that was representing the bank that
they were foreclosing, he said. At the
same time I received a notice from the
Landlord-Tenant Court from the banks
lawyer about an eviction.
Added Vanzant, Thats when she [the
banks lawyer] told me, They dont want to talk
to you. They wont have anything to do with
you. They dont have anything to say to you.
Mike Haack, an organizer for Occupy
Our Homes and one of the leaders of
the protest demonstration last week, said
the group plans further protests if Bank
of America doesnt demonstrate a good
faith effort to work out a way for Vanzant
to save his home.
We feel the bank can take steps to allow
him to keep his house, Haack said. The
Reverend is an asset to the community.
Vanzant, who was being treated at Howard
University Hospital at the time of the Sept.
6 protest, said a representative of the bank
called him at the hospital that same day,
leading him to believe that the protest may
have alerted the bank to his plight.
I told them I couldnt talk to them at
that time because I was under medical
treatment, he told the Blade. I said I
would like to talk to them the next week.
He said the banks representative called
again last Friday and he arranged to speak
with the representative this week.
Bank of America did not respond to a
request for comment.

Two gay candidates advance in Delaware
Two gay candidates for the Delaware Legislature on Tuesday won their
respective primaries.
With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Rehoboth Beach Realtor Andy Staton
easily won the Democratic primary for the 6th Senate District with 58.1 percent of
the vote. Former Dewey Beach Mayor Bob Frederick came in second with 22.6
percent, while former congressional candidate Mike Miller nished third with 19.3
percent of the vote.
Staton, who announced last month that his campaign had raised more than
$100,000, will face Republican Ernie Lopez in the general election. He could
join Marie Mayor, who won the Democratic primary in the 20th House District,
as the rst openly LGBT candidates elected to the state legislature if he wins in
November.
Were excited, were humbled, Staton told the Blade. Its been an amazing
opportunity to identify issues. Were looking forward to delivering results for the
residents of the 6th District.
Chuck Wolfe, president of the Victory Fund, which endorsed both Staton and
Mayor, celebrated their primary victories.
Were thrilled for Marie and Andy tonight, and we look forward to standing
with them over the next seven weeks, he said. Delaware could nally get its
rst openly gay state lawmakers, and thats an important step toward achieving
full equality.
Mitch Crane, former president of the Barbara Gittings Delaware Stonewall
Democrats, narrowly lost in his bid to unseat incumbent Insurance Commissioner
Karen Weldin Stewart who received 32.6 percent of the vote. Crane came in
second with 29.8 percent, while Paul Gallagher nished third with 19.8 percent of
the vote. Dennis Spivack nished fourth with 17 percent.
Crane told the Blade that he called Stewart, for whom he had worked at the
Delaware Department of Insurance until Jan. 2011, and congratulated her. He also
applauded Staton and Mayor on their primary victories.
Im happy for my friends Andy and Marie, said Crane. I hope to help them
in November. Theyre going to need it.

African-American LGBT charity group debuts
A newly launched LGBT charitable organization in D.C. called Kindred: An
African-American LGBT Giving Circle is scheduled to award its rst grant on
Monday, opening the way for what organizers say will be a unique new venue for
philanthropy in the city.
Kindred utilizes the power of collective giving to uplift the African American
LGBT community in Washington, D.C., a statement announcing the groups
mission says.
By pooling our time, talent, and treasure we empower our community from
within, nurture ourselves as philanthropists, and honor organizations working to
enhance the lives of black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in the
District, the statement says.
Lesbian activist Aisha Moodie-Mills, who was among the lead organizers of the
campaign to pass D.C.s same-sex marriage law in 2009, is the spokesperson and
member of the new groups ve-member Guiding Circle leadership team.
Moodie-Mills told the Blade that Kindred is scheduled to award its rst grant or
gift of $13,000 on Monday to D.C.s Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League
(SMYAL). She said Kindred selected SMYAL for the rst award, among other
things, because of SMYALs longstanding work in support of African-American
LGBT youth.
According to Moodie-Mills, the Washington Area Womens Foundation, a
tax-exempt charitable group, is serving as Kindreds scal sponsor, allowing all
donations to Kindred to be tax deductible.
The groups mission statement says organizers modeled Kindred on the African-
American tradition of community giving and support.
Our African American history is rich with individual philanthropists people
who provided warm meals for families in the community in need, and books and
resources for young people trying to make it through school, the statement says.
The statement says the group is recruiting inaugural members to what it calls
its giving circle, which initially will consist of 12 to 25 people who each commit
to donating $420 or more each year to Kindred.
Members of the giving circle are also asked to participate in the organizations
collaborative grant-making process to decide on the recipients of future
grants, the statement says. It says the Gill Foundation, a Colorado based LGBT
philanthropic organization, gave Kindred a $10,000 seed grant to help the group
begin its work.

Baltimore native notes
law enhances freedom
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
Former Republican National Committee
Chair Ken Mehlman stressed this week
that the ght to defend Marylands same-
sex marriage law is personal.
Having grown up in Baltimore and with
family still living there and in Bethesda, I
am pleased to support the effort to permit
civil marriage in Maryland, he told the
Blade. This proposal enhances freedom
and encourages fairness, while also
safeguarding religious freedom.
Mehlman, who managed then-
President George W. Bushs 2004 re-
election campaign, spoke to the Blade
three days before he was scheduled
to co-host a Marylanders for Marriage
Equality fundraiser in New York City
alongside gay director John Waters, who
is also from Baltimore. Actor Josh Charles,
supermodel Hilary Rhoda and other
Marylanders also served as co-hosts of the
event alongside actresses Julianne Moore
and Sarah Jessica Parker, comedian
Sandra Bernhard, former New York
Rangers forward Sean Avery and others.
Gov. Martin OMalley was also
scheduled to speak at the event where
tickets range from $250-$25,000. The
event was to take place after Blade
deadline; visit washingtonblade.com for
updated coverage.
Same-sex marriage activists have
credited Mehlman, who came out as
gay in 2010, with successfully lobbying
Republican lawmakers to support nuptials
for gays and lesbians four GOP New
York state senators voted for the same-sex
marriage bill that Gov. Andrew Cuomo
signed into law in June 2011.
Mehlman also urged New Hampshire
lawmakers in an op-ed that the Union
Leader, the states largest newspaper,
published in January to vote against a
bill that would have repealed the Granite
States same-sex marriage law. Lawmakers
defeated the measure in the state House
by a 211-116 margin in March, with 100
Republicans voting against it.
Mehlman also reached out to Maryland
GOP lawmakers including state Sen. Allen
Kittleman (R-Howard County) and state Del.
Wade Kach (R-Baltimore County) before
Annapolis lawmakers ultimately approved a
same-sex marriage bill in February. OMalley
signed it into law on March 1, less than two
weeks after Republican New Jersey Gov.
Chris Christie vetoed a measure that would
have allowed gays and lesbians to tie the
knot in the Garden State.
The GOP adopted party platform
language during last months Republican
National Convention in Tampa that
endorses a proposed federal constitutional
amendment that would dene marriage
as between a man and a woman the
D.C. Republican Committee in late June
became the rst state GOP party to add
LGB-inclusive language to its platform.
Republican presidential nominee Mitt
Romney said during his RNC acceptance
speech that he would honor the
institution of marriage if elected.
Florida Congresswoman Ileana Ros-
Lehtinen; David Koch; Meghan and Cindy
McCain and James C. DiPaula, Jr., former
Maryland Gov. Robert Ehrlichs campaign
manager and chief of staff, are among the
Republicans who have endorsed marriage
rights for gays and lesbians.
Republicans and conservatives should
support this because it is consistent with our
principles: more freedom, less government
interference, family values like commitment
and love, all while safeguarding religious
freedom, Mehlman told the Blade. If you
want to stand up for freedom and family
values, then you should support allowing
adults the freedom to marry the person
they love.
Having grown up in Baltimore and with family still living there and in Bethesda, I am pleased to support
the effort to permit civil marriage in Maryland, former RNC Chair KEN MEHLMAN told the Blade.

Marriage leads in polls ahead of Wash. vote
OLYMPIA A poll of 524 likely voters shows the gap widening between those
who would preserve same-sex marriage in Washington State, and those who
would reject the new law.
Fifty-six percent of respondents to the KING 5/Survey USA poll would vote to
uphold Washingtons yet-to-be-implemented same-sex marriage law, while just
38 percent would vote to overturn the law. The 18-point margin is the widest yet
shown for the measure, which Public Policy Polling put at 51 percent in favor, and
42 percent against in June.
Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire (D) championed and signed the law in
February 2012, which was immediately followed by a campaign to bring the new
law to a voter referendum, taking place Nov. 6.
While this is the biggest number and the widest spread recorded by any independent
poll, this remains a very uid race and our opponents have yet to unleash their attacks,
read a statement by Zach Silk, campaign manager for Washington United for Marriage,
which supports same-sex marriage. Weve seen whats happened in other states
and thats generally a late attack aimed at frightening voters, so well continue to work
round-the-clock, talking to voters and reminding them that in Washington, everyone
should have the freedom to marry the person they love.
Washington joins voters in both Maine and Maryland in voting on whether or
not to extend marriage rights to same-sex couples on Election Day. Additionally,
Minnesota voters will choose whether or not to bar those unions with a
constitutional amendment. An August poll in Maryland found 54 percent in favor
of same-sex marriage, with 40 percent opposed, while a July poll in Maine put the
difference at 57 percent in favor and 35 percent against.
School climate survey released
NEW YORK A survey examining the experiences of 8,548 LGBT students from
all 50 states and the District of Columbia shows, for the rst time, improvement in
school environments for LGBT students.
The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Networks sixth biennial National
School Climate Survey shows that reports of LGBT students hearing anti-gay
epithets frequently or often has decreased signicantly, though eight out of
every 10 LGBT student still reports experiencing harassment in school because of
their sexual orientation.
The survey also found the presence of a gay-straight alliance club on campus or
LGBT-inclusive curriculum led to less reporting of students feeling unsafe on campus.
The 2011 survey marks a possible turning point in the school experiences of
LGBT youth, said Dr. Joseph Kosciw, GLSENs Senior Director of Research and
Strategic Initiatives. But an alarming number of LGBT youth still face barriers that
inhibit their ability to receive an education.

of nancial difculties facing the city of
Providence, R.I., where Cicilline served as
mayor before running for Congress.
A report commissioned by the City
Council last year blamed Cicillines
administration for a lack of transparency
and for making a series of moves like
tapping into Providences rainy-day
fund without councilors approval. The
lawmaker apologized in April, saying he
should have been more forthright about
the nancial condition of the city.
Still, Cicilline retained support heading
into the primary. The lawmaker was once
again endorsed by the Gay & Lesbian Victory
Fund. In new campaign ads, former U.S. Rep.
Patrick Kennedy, who once held the seat
now held by Cicilline, vouched for the out
lawmakers commitment to public service.
Sexual orientation did come into play
during the Democratic primary. According
to the Associated Press, Anthony Sionni,
an unpaid campaign staffer for the
Gemma campaign, compared the openly
gay lawmaker on Twitter to convicted child
molester and former Penn State coach
Jerry Sandusky, saying theres nothing
wrong with smearing a liar, thief, crook,
Sandusky copy cat. The state Democratic
Party had called for Gemma to re Anthony
Sionni, apologize to Cicilline and disavow
the message. In response, a Gemma
campaign spokesperson reportedly said
the tweet was inappropriate and Sionni
agreed to leave the campaign.
Cicilline was running against a primary
opponent who largely self-nanced his
campaign. According to Federal Election
Commission reports, 80 percent of the
$315,000 that Gemma raised was from
him contributing or lending his money
to his own campaign. In comparison, all
the $1.7 million that Cicilline raised for
his campaign was the result of outside
contributions.
But Cicilline isnt out of the woods in
his bid to retain his U.S. House seat. Hes
facing a challenge in the general election
from Republican Brendan Doherty, a
retired high-ranking police ofcer and
former superintendent of Rhode Islands
Department of Public Safety.
According to a poll published by Rhode
Islands WPRI late last month, 52 percent of
Gemma supporters said theyd back Doherty
in the general election if the Democratic
challenger lost the primary. Compared to the
$1.7 million that Cicilline has raised, Doherty
has $1.1 million in total net receipts. About
ve percent, or $50,000, of Dohertys net
receipts are from self-nancing.
Chuck Wolfe, the Victory Funds CEO,
said the choice is clear on LGBT issues
heading into the general election because
Doherty supports the Defense of Marriage
Act, an anti-gay law that prohibits federal
recognition of same-sex marriage.
Were pleased that Rhode Island
Democrats have once again chosen David
Cicilline to represent them in Congress,
Wolfe said. Now voters will face a
clear choice this November between a
persistent champion for LGBT equality,
and an opponent who supports the
Defense of Marriage Act, which makes life
harder for so many American families.
The Democratic primary produced
mixed results in terms of electing
candidates who support marriage
equality. One lesbian candidate, Laura
Pisaturo, narrowly lost her bid to unseat
a Democratic lawmaker who opposes
same-sex marriage.
Many incumbent Democrats who
support marriage equality fended off
challenges from candidates who oppose
it. Among those incumbents were State
Sen. Ryan Pearson, State Rep. Arthur
Handy, State Rep. Greg Amore, State
Rep. Joseph Almeida, and State House
Majority Whip Patrick ONeill.

Vogues vaunted September
issue chock full of
queer content
Coming of age as a torn-jeans, annel
shirt-wearing lesbian feminist, I had little
use for fashion. Though now I can rock
a pantsuit if required, Im still far from a
fashionista. Yet recently, I felt like a kid
on Christmas morning when I found the
Vogue September issue in my mailbox.
Seeing Vogues 120th anniversary is-
sue, with its sumptuous art, photos and
articles, for me was like what Medieval
pilgrims must have experienced when
they at long last glimpsed the Holy Grail.
Vogues cover, featuring Lady Gaga, and
proclaiming 916 pages of spectacular
fall fashion for all promised art and fash-
ion for everyone even a fashion-loving,
non-fashionista like me.
Growing up, when some of us es-
chewed the dictates of fashion by con-
forming to non-conformity or protest-
ed against sexism by refusing to adhere
to conventional ideals of beauty Id
never have dreamed that decades later
Id be enthralled by fashion or devour
Vogue.
What transformed me from a fashion-
bashing feminist into a (still feminist)
Vogue acionado? Looking at my (inner
and outer) self in the mirror, falling in love
with Carrie Bradshaw and realizing that I
really am my mothers daughter.
I cant say exactly when it happened.
But one day, it hit me: with my unruly hair,
faded shirts and unshapely, hole-lled
pants, I was so unattractive that, without
intending to, I was making a fashion state-
ment. Only, not a good fashion statement
I had the look of a fashion victim.
Cornelius Eadys wonderful poem
White Socks in his collection Hard-
headed Weather: New and Selected
Poems, speaks to the sartorially chal-
lenged. This is not meant to insult you./
Some of my best friends/Have no taste,
the narrator of Eadys poem tells a fashion
victim, ...But listen to reason. You know/
We cant go/Anywhere/With you wear-
ing/White socks.
I didnt want to end up (guratively
or literally) wearing white socks. While
I didnt expect to walk about my city in
Manolo Blahniks like Carrie, I now knew
that you can be queer, (a second or third
wave feminist) and, in your own way, ap-
preciative of the art and aesthetics of
fashion. Like my Mom, I began to enjoy
shopping on special occasions for outts
with my friends, nding the perfect scarf,
or discovering the most colorful (non-
white) pair of socks.
I deplored (and still deplore), the
harmful effects of our cultures obses-
sion with body image. Given fashions
enormous inuence on culture and com-
merce (658 pages in Vogues September
issue are ads and one ad in Vogue can
cost up to $165,232), it makes sense when
Vogue editor Anna Wintour says, There
is something about fashion that can make
people very nervous, in the 2009 docu-
mentary The September Issue.
Yet, Ive come to agree with my friend
Penny who says, its horrible what the
emphasis on being so thin has done to
models, women and girls. But, its great to
wear and look at your favorite clothes!
Fashion exists in the intersection of art,
style and business. Trying to pin it down
is like the cliche about porn: you know
it when you see it. Fashion is style and
styles not just the clothes you wear, but
its what you eat, where you go, who you
hang out with, says designer Alexan-
der Wang in a prole of him by Hamish
Bowles in the Vogue September issue.
Vogues queer quotient is on splen-
did display in its 120th anniversary issue
with photos and articles highlighting
the work of, among many others, Truman
Capote, Henry James, Colm Toibin and
Annie Leibovitz.
I am not...sure anyone realizes...what
goes into creating a shoot, writes Win-
tour in the editors letter in the September
issue. Its a quicksilver understanding of
whatever fashion is at that ... moment,
and presenting a sampling of ... culture
as we are experiencing it at that time.
Dont be a fashion victim. Check out
Vogues September issue.

Now that The New Normal is off and running an online pilot teased the
series while its rst two regular broadcasts were Monday and Tuesday this week
before settling into its regular Tuesday night time slot most TV fans know the
premise.
This latest creation from gay TV mastermind Ryan Murphy (Glee, Nip/Tuck,
American Horror Story), it tells of a happy young gay Los Angeles couple, Bryan
(Andrew Rannells) and David (Justin Bartha), who convince new-in-town Goldie
(Georgia King) to be a surrogate so they can start a family.
The show is off to a decent-enough start. Monday nights network debut found it
winning its time slot drawing about 6.9 million viewers, though about 45 percent of
those whod tuned in for lead-in hit The Voice, cut out for Normal. Some critics
are calling the performances a triumph over content.
Entertainment Weeklys Ken Tucker calls Rannells best known for his Broadway
turn in The Book of Mormon one of the hottest young talents around and he
does as much as he can with a role that co-creators Murphy and Ali Adler seem to
have conceived as a cross between Charles Nelson Reilly and Rip Taylor; all Bryan is
missing is a bag of confetti to throw at his costars after delivering a punch line. Its to
Rannells credit that he made the premieres attempts at heart tugging, which as a
home video made for the future baby professing how desperately you are wanted,
seem heartfelt.
The San Francisco Chronicle praised its humor, solid performances and snappily
written script. The Los Angeles Times said the pilot felt at or programmatic
but much was likable as well, especially the nonchalant tenderness between the
male leads.
During a conference call last week, Rannells, Bartha and King elded questions
on everything from where the show is headed, to working with Murphy to what they
think about the controversy the show has generated (Salt Lake City, Utah-based
NBC afliate KSL has refused to air the show though it claimed it was more for the
sexually explicit content, demeaning dialogue and inciting stereotypes than its
gay characters or LGBT families; two Utah pro-gay groups in a partnership with
GLAAD are screening the show for Utah residents).
I actually do hope people are offended by it, Bartha says. I think hopefully it
will get conversations started in family homes and that families who love it will love
it for what it is, a compassionate and loving family with many positive aspects. And
the ones who are offended by it or nd that it strikes them as offensive, hopefully

Alex Mills is in the midst of a heinously busy day. Its after 11 p.m. and hes
been in heavy-duty tech rehearsals since 5:30. After we get off the phone, hes
going back for another 90 minutes or so. Its all part of the grueling process of
getting a show on its feet.
Mills plays the title role in Jekyll & Hyde, the latest movement-based
extravaganza from Arlingtons Synetic Theater where Mills has been in several
shows since 2008. It started when he took a year off from college overwhelmed
by the daunting Boston University tuition price. A friend suggested he check
out Synetic. He did, got a callback and is now one of the innovative theaters
senior company members.
If the roster there seems rather insular, he says its out of necessity. The
grueling physical training regimen its visionaries Paata and Irina Tsikurishvilli
put their players through means other actors in the region not steeped in the
Synetic tradition could get up to speed fast enough for a single show. Synetic
members commit to one show a year and staying up to date with their training
sessions. Mills is just starting to branch out some look for him at Studio and
Signature in the coming year.
But is the all-consuming nature of the work at Synetic too overwhelming after
a few years?
Doing these shows is so fullling, the 23-year-old Fredericksburg, Va.,
native says. Theres such a sense of ownership in the work, its sort of my
spiritual outlet as well. Its what lls me up. A lot of the actors say after they
havent been doing a show for a month or so, that they feel so empty were
very close. We talk about everything and know each other so intimately. Theyre
the closest people in my life.
Jekyll & Hyde is in previews now and opens ofcially Thursday and runs
through Oct. 21. Visit synetictheater.org for details.
Mills, whos single, says he has few interests outside theater. He just moved
to Bloomingdale.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN OUT
AND WHO WAS THE HARDEST
PERSON TO TELL?
I came out when I was 21 so I guess that
makes it about a year and a half for me. The
hardest person to tell (and by hard I dont
mean in any way hard due to repercussions
or any fear of not being accepted) was my
mom. I think for most guys coming out the
rst signicant person in your life you tell,
whether it be friends or family, is always the
hardest because its like Theres no going
back now!
WHOS YOUR LGBT HERO?
Anderson Cooper. I admire him for
his professionalism and the fact that him
being gay is not something that he even
feels he has to explain to people. He is
what he is and lives his life.
WHATS WASHINGTONS BEST
NIGHTSPOT, PAST OR PRESENT?
Im probably the worst person to
ask this to because I am so not in the
scene. Being in theater, I would say
wherever the cast of a large play or
musical goes to is going to be the best
nightspot you could nd. Its a free show.
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM WEDDING.
I actually dont have a fully eshed out
idea of what I would want but it would be
small, probably on the beach with close
friends and family. Or on Mars; the landing
of this rover has really got me thinking.
WHAT NON-LGBT ISSUE ARE YOU
MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT?
Womens rights. Legitimate rape?
Come on. Its amazing how these people
come into power.
WHAT HISTORICAL OUTCOME
WOULD YOU CHANGE?
Luke Skywalker going to the Dark Side.
WHATS BEEN THE MOST
MEMORABLE POP CULTURE
MOMENT OF YOUR LIFETIME?
The whole era of Britney Spears going crazy.
ON WHAT DO YOU INSIST?
Be able to laugh at yourself.
WHAT WAS YOUR LAST FACEBOOK
POST OR TWEET?
Dear God, Ryan and I tackled him
moving in like a couple of coke heads
with a mission; shazamablama!
IF YOUR LIFE WERE A BOOK, WHAT
WOULD THE TITLE BE?
Makin it Work; somehow
IF SCIENCE DISCOVERED A WAY
TO CHANGE SEXUAL ORIENTATION,
WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
Thats a thought I dont even want to
entertain. Id be afraid itd turn into an
X-Men 3-type situation.
WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IN BEYOND
THE PHYSICAL WORLD?
I wouldnt say I believe in something
beyond the physical world, necessarily,
but I do like to think and hope that theres
some energy out there that directs us or
at least collects us at the end.
WHATS YOUR ADVICE FOR LGBT
MOVEMENT LEADERS?
Be strong and patient.
WHAT WOULD YOU WALK ACROSS
HOT COALS FOR?
My friends and family.
WHAT LGBT STEREOTYPE ANNOYS
YOU MOST?
That we are all super coiffed at all times.
WHATS YOUR FAVORITE LGBT
MOVIE?
Were the World Mine. I saw it
during the time when I was in rehearsals
for a Midsummer Nights Dream.
WHATS THE MOST OVERRATED
SOCIAL CUSTOM?
Having to keep conversation with
people when you dont want to.
WHAT TROPHY OR PRIZE DO YOU
MOST COVET?
I want an Olympic medal so
bad. Ideally, in gymnastics, but that ship
has sailed.
WHAT DO YOU WISH YOUD KNOWN
AT 18?
That coming out doesnt make the
slightest difference in the world, at
least in my life with the people Im
surrounded by.
WHY WASHINGTON?
It was never a choice for me, I started
working up here with Synetic Theater
when I was 19 and Ive been trucking
along ever since. I love the community,
and the fact that D.C. is totally
manageable and not overwhelming. And
it just ts, at least for right now in my life.

No other medium
absorbs LGBT angst quite
like the printed page
By TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER
Theres a lot less money on the line
with a book than with a movie or TV show.
Which is why the printed page is always
one of the best places to nd LGBT
content. This fall is no exception.
If the summer saw you with new bling-
er on your nger, then youll want to grab
From the Closet to the Altar: Courts,
Backlash and the Struggle for Same-
Sex Marriage by Michael J. Klarman.
As a legal expert, Klarman has excellent
insight into litigation and the ght for
same-sex marriage. In this book, he looks
at the politics, legal wrangling, personal
stories, fallout and triumphs in the
movement toward equality in marriage.
Speaking of marriage, you might also
like My Husband and My Wives: A
Gay Mans Odyssey by Charles Rowan
Beye. On one hand, this is the story of
one mans realization that hes attracted
to men. On the other hand, its about his
marriages to women not once, but
twice and then his marriage to the love
of his life.
For something a little more somber,
look for October Mourning: A Song
for Matthew Shepard by Leslea
Newman. Written as a novel in verse
form, this work of ction allows voices
from various points of view to come forth
in remembrance of the day Shepard died
so violently. This is a quick book to read,
which is good: youll have time to read it
again and again. Also look for Letters
to My Bully written and/or edited by
Azaan Kamau, Ifalade Ta-Shia Asanti,
Kergan Edwards-Stout and Robert
LaSardo. Its a book that lets victims of
bullying speak up and be heard, written
by a host of contributors who are mad
and wont sit down and shut up anymore.
On a lighter note, what makes you
gay? In Born This Way: Real Stories of
Growing Up Gay by Paul Vitagliano,
youll get a look at personal stories,
memories and childhood pictures of real
people whove embraced their LGBT
lives, whove known it since they were
kids and who celebrate it with pride. Yes,
this book is based on the blog of the
same name and yes, the book is equally
fun to read.
How to Be Gay by David M.
Halperin could also be fun but it could
incite argument, too, because its lled
with thought-provoking ideas and
hypotheses. Halperin doesnt shy away
from controversy here, nor does he bow
to stereotypes, which means that this is a
book you might nish and then share with
your straight friends.
Discuss.
Lesbian writer (and Lambda Literary
Award winner) Emma Donoghue is back
with Astray, a new collection of short
stories thats slated for Oct. 30.
Of course, maybe youve got a busy
fall, a jam-packed schedule and youre
overloaded with things to do and when
youre busy, who has time to read, right?
Well surely youve got time for some
eye-popping art like Gorgeous Gallery
by David Leddick. This huge collection of
erotic artwork features some old favorite
artists and lots of new talent that could
quickly become your new fave. This book
is from Bruno Gmender, as is Bel Ami
Rebels by photographer Joan Crisal, a
look at European porn stars who are willing
to show their naughty and nice sides.
Bruno Gmuender, by the way, also has
a new Tom of Findland book due this
fall, as well as a new superhero comic art
book by Iceman Blue.

No two drivers, or accidents for that matter, are the
same. Thats why every year the Insurance Institute for
Highway Safety (IIHS) species a battery of crash tests,
from many different angles, to help consumers make the
right choices when it comes to automobile safety.
But tests, much like accidents, can sometimes come
out of nowhere. Case in point - the new Small Overlap
Frontal Crash Test prescribed by the IIHS. A crash test
where 25% of a cars front end on the drivers side strikes
a 5-foot-high barrier at 40 miles per hour. A test that has
never been conducted before in the U.S. or Europe.
The result? Predictable, to say the least. Only one
European luxury sedan earned a good rating from the
IIHSthe 2012 Volvo S60. Now lets put that in perspective.
In the very same test, both the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and
the Audi A4 earned a poor rating, while
the BMW 3-Series earned a marginal
rating. In addition, the Volvo S60 also
scored the highest in Structural Integrity
among all cars tested. Thats crucial because in certain
crashes, a robust structure along with a strong safety cage
work in tandem to absorb much of the impact thereby
helping protect the occupants.
While were attered to receive such high praise from
the IIHS, we cant say were terribly surprised. Weve been
performing hundreds of similar Small Overlap Tests
(thousands if you take into account the other crash tests
weve conducted) since the 1980s. Weve also been
diligently taking down notes and keeping the results in mind
when designing newer models like the 2012 S60. So while
most automotive manufacturers are content to design their
cars to excel in existing tests, we are continually looking for
new opportunities to improve on passenger safety. Because
at Volvo, we dont build cars to merely pass crash tests;
we build them for the people who will eventually drive them.
And that evidently is making a big impact.

Gay themes in both
indie and mainstream
fall lm fare
By BRIAN T. CARNEY
The LGBT fall lm calendar gets off to
an exciting start with the D.C. release of
How to Survive A Plague Sept. 28.
The inspirational documentary by rst
time lmmaker David France tells the
story of two coalitions ACT UP (the
AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) and
TAG (the Treatment Action Group) and
how they changed medical and political
history. France, a journalist who has been
covering the AIDS crisis for 30 years, draws
on archival footage, much of it shot by the
activists themselves, to tell the stories of
the brave men and women who banded
together to ght the plague.
The lm examines how they saved the
lives of millions of people by battling
apathetic government bureaucrats and
politicians, developing shocking outreach
strategies to spur a complacent media into
action, exposing greedy pharmaceutical
companies and educating a scared and
ignorant populace.
Lee Daniels, the openly gay director of
Precious, returns to the big screen with
The Paperboy. Based on the novel by
Pete Dexter and set in the swamplands
of Florida in 1969, The Paperboy offers
a provocative, sexually charged tale of
desire, ambition, prejudice and crime.
The lm centers on two brothers
returning to their hometown. Jack Jansen
(Zac Efron) has been kicked out of college
and is now working as a paperboy for
his father, the local newspaper publisher.
Miami journalist Ward Jansen (Matthew
McConaughey) comes home to prove the
innocence of death row inmate Hillary Van
Welter (John Cusack). Wards investigation
reveals of tangled web of sexual tension,
mixed motives and shadowy facts.
The cast is rounded out by Nicole
Kidman as vampy death-row groupie
Charlotte Bless, David Oyelowo as Wards
hotshot writing partner Yardley Acheman,
and Macy Gray as Anita, the family maid.
The lms producers hint that a central
plot twist involves a characters emerging
sexuality, but are tight-lipped about which
character comes out. They do, however,
conrm the tabloid rumors that Zac Efron
dances in his underwear and frequently
appears shirtless. It opens Oct. 5.
On a lighter note, For a Good Time, Call
, helmed by openly gay director Jamie
Travis, is a comic look at two Manhattan
women who get involved in the phone sex
industry. Estranged college friends Katie
Steele (Ari Graynor) and Lauren Powell
(Lauren Miller, who also co-wrote the script
with Katie Anne Nayton) are reintroduced
by their gay mutual friend Jesse (Justin
Long) when both face a housing emergency.
Katie is initially shocked when she
overhears her new roommate talking
to one of her clients, but quickly sees
dollar signs. The two establish their own
company, and are quickly raking in the
cash as they resume their friendship and
possibly more. The lm includes cameos by
Seth Rogan, Ken Marino and Kevin Smith
as three clients. Its in theaters now.
Keep the Lights On (Sept. 7) is a drama
about a closeted lawyer (Zachary Booth) and
a documentary lmmaker (Thure Lindhardt)
and their mercurial relationship.
Diana Vreeland: the Eye Has to
Travel is a documentary about the former
Vogue editor. It opens Sept. 21.
And speaking of documentaries, details
are still be worked out, but former Log Cabin
president-turned-documentarian Patrick
Sammon is nalizing details for a screening
of his rst lm about the life of Alan Turing
(called Codebreaker), the gay World War
II-era legend. Its tentatively slated for an
October opening and a November wider
release in 20-30 U.S. cities.
Other LGBT releases expected this fall
include:
Pitch Perfect, a battle-of-the-sexes
comedy about the rivalry between two
college a cappella singing groups (Oct. 5).
Bear City 2, a sequel to the popular
movie that takes the cast of bears and
chasers from their New York City lairs
to the wilds of Provincetown. It will be
screened as part of Reel Afrmations in
D.C. on Nov. 4.
Gayby, about the problems that
ensue when frustrated single Jenn asks her
gay best friend Matt to help her conceive
a child the old-fashioned way. Its also in
Reel Afrmations. Look for it Nov. 3.
Speaking of Reel Afrmations, D.C.s
annual international LGBT lm festival,
the 21
st
festival is scheduled for Nov. 1-4
and the selection committee is currently
hard at work nalizing the schedule. In
the meantime, RA XTRA offers monthly
lm screenings. Septembers screening,
a double feature of Cloudburst and
Men To Kiss, will be held on Sept. 20 at
the Carnegie Institute for Science.
Cloudburst is a romantic road movie
about two lesbians (played by Oscar
winners Olympia Dukakis and Brenda
Fricker) who ee their nursing home in
Maine and drive to Nova Scotia in an
attempt to be legally married. Men To
Kiss is about Ernst and Tobias, a gay
couple in Berlin whose lives are upset
when Ernsts old friend Uta draws them
into her schemes.
The Chesapeake Film Festival in
nearby Easton and Oxford, Md., is Sept.
21-23 and includes two LGBT-themed
lms Trans and Queen of Country
(both screening Sept. 22 at the Academy
Art Museum). Visit chesapeakelmfestival.
com for details.
The D.C. Shorts Film Festival continues
through this weekend. It, too, has LGBT
content in several lms. Visit dcshorts.com
for details.
The fall lm season comes to a
spectacular close with the much-
anticipated release of the cinematic
adaptation of the hit Broadway musical
Les Miserables (Dec. 14). Based on
the classic Victor Hugo novel with music
by Claude-Michel Schonberg, lyrics by
Alain Boublil and screenplay by William
Nicholson, the epic movie traces the
decades-long battle between escaped
convict Jean Valjean and obsessed police
inspector Javert. The all-star cast includes
Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne
Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Sacha Baron
Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter.

Wide array of fall releases
slated from Mika to Yoko
By ERIN DURKIN
This season brings listeners a
combination of whole new sounds,
including new works from Mika and the
Pet Shop Boys, along with re-imagined
and re-worked throwbacks as Nina
Simone is honored and Barbra Streisand
releases never-before-heard songs from
earlier parts of her career.
Folk-rock musician Melissa Etheridges
newly released album, 4
th
Street Feeling,
takes listeners back to her hometown
Leavenworth, Kan. Etheridge describes 4
th
St. as the main drag of downtown and this
is the rst time where she takes lead guitar
to sing the bluesy sounds of her home.
Released earlier this week, the Pet
Shop Boys new album Elysium is the
30-year-old groups attempt to infuse the
music with fresh sounds by recording in
Los Angeles with Kanye West associate
Andrew Dawson. The rst single Winner
was revealed in July and it was performed
before the Olympic tennis game along
with Always On My Mind and What
Have I Done to Deserve This? in Henman
Hill, Wimbledon.
Also just out is Amy Cooks new album
Summer Skin where singers as diverse
as Robert Plant and Patty Grifn join her
for the project she calls highly melodic
and catchy.
The day after, Nelly Furtados latest
album The Spirit Indestructible released
and it is her rst English language album
in six years. Three years in the making,
Furtado has returned to her Whoa Nelly!
origins with a pop and R&B combo.
The multi-platinum out star Mika
releases his new album The Origin of
Love on Oct. 16. His third album, every
aspect of The Origin of Love was put
together completely by Mika over two
years. He ew all over the world to put
together a large amount of collaborators
including Greg Wells, who has worked
with stars such as Rufus Wainwright, Katy
Perry, Elton John and Adele.
Yoko Ono has linked up with Sonic
Youths Kim Gordon and Thurston Moor
to produce YOKOKIMTHURSTON
coming out Sept. 25. The album has only
six tracks, however it still appears to be
lengthy based on their rst single Early
in the Morning, which is 14 minutes long.
The announcement of the new album
came to surprise many fans since Kim
Gordon and Thurston Moore split after 27
years of marriage last October.
Seattle-based rapper, Macklemore
(also known as Ben Haggerty) has a new
release The Heist LP coming out Oct.
9. The previously released single Same
Love, which showed Macklemores
support for same-sex marriage, is included
on the track along with Cant Hold Us
and Make the Money.
While some artists are producing
new modern sounds, some are putting
fresh twists on the old. Meshell
Ndegeocello comes out with Pour Une
Ame Souveraine: A Dedication to Nina
Simone on Oct. 9, a tribute to legendary
singer and pianist Nina Simone who died
in 2003. The juxtaposition of Simones
lyrical clarity against the unclear style of
Ndegeocello, whos bi, appears in many
of the albums songs.
Also reimaging older numbers is Tori
Amos, whose newest album Gold Dust
comes out on Oct. 2. This year marks
the 20th anniversary of Amos rst album
Little Earthquakes, and her new album
includes several numbers spanning her
career re-recorded with the Metropole
Orchestra. The idea for the album was
conceived in 2010 when Amos was invited
to perform with the orchestra and she
enjoyed hearing her songs being played
in this style. She wanted the renditions of
her songs recorded.
Also working somewhat within that vein is
Aussie diva Kylie Minogue, whose Abbey
Road Sessions drops Nov. 6 featuring 16
of her songs re-imagined and re-arranged
with full orchestra. It will also include one
previously unreleased cut, Flower.
Barbra Streisand is sharing 11 unreleased
numbers that span from 1963 to the present
in her album Release Me, which is
available on Vinyl on Sept. 25 and on CD
on Oct. 9. Many of the tracks were extra
recordings that did not make it onto the
original albums. The tracks include songs
such as Willow Weep For Me, recorded in
1967 for the album Simply Streisand, and
a version of Randy Newmans I Think Its
Going Rain Today with Newman on piano
and Streisand singing.
Leona Lewis is nally releasing her third
studio album Glassheart on Oct. 15. The
album was originally scheduled to release
last fall, but was pushed back several times
to add more recording sessions. Lewis
performed the rst single Collide on Simon
Cowells new game show Red or Black?
Later in September 2011, she performed this
single along with the title song Glassheart
at G-A-Y nightclub in London.
Freshening up the later part of fall
is Taylor Swift with her studio album
Red slated for Oct. 22. Swift is known
for her tumultuous and emotional style,
often pulling from her past relationships
as inspiration. Her new work promises
to be no different as the rst released
single We Are Never Getting Back
Together might be the next breakup

Washington National
Opera features high
stakes and hijinks in
new season
By GREG MARZULLO
From epic royals to legendary libertines,
Washington National Operas 2012-2013
season openers are a perfect t for capital
city audiences mired in a presidential
election year.
First out of the gate is Gaetano
Donizettis Anna Bolena, opening Sept.
14. Starring soprano Sondra Radvanovsky
in the title role, the 19
th
-century opera
follows the waning days of Anne Boleyns
reign as Queen of England before being
found guilty of adultery and beheaded.
The opera is amazing dramatically,
says Radvanovsky, and the music on top
of it is just any sopranos dream.
Radvanovsky made a name for herself
in the dramatic soprano repertoire of
Giuseppe Verdi, but in recent years, she
started branching out to explore other
roles. Often compared to renowned
soprano Maria Callas, who revived Anna
Bolena from near obscurity in the 1950s,
Radvanovskys voice possess a full-blooded
timbre thats matched by a riveting acting
sense, according to her director for this
production, Stephen Lawless.
The intelligence which she brings
to the playing of Anna is thrilling and
moving, says Lawless, whos gay. She
always puts her abilities to the service of
the job in hand.
The opera culminates in a heartbreaking
and deant mad scene for Anna, yet both
Lawless and Radvanovsky feel this isnt the
garden-variety hysteria portrayed in other
operas, including the same composers
calling card Lucia di Lammermoor.
Shes emotionally naked,
Radvanovsky says of the queen. The
easy card to put down is to play cuckoo-
for-Cocoa-Puffs. Anna Bolena isnt crazy;
its just too much for her to handle, and I
think thats something that more people
can relate to.
She nds inner resources that I suspect
she never knew she had, Lawless says about
the doomed queen, adding that her death
transforms tragedy into something glorious.
Despite the tudor-era setting for the
story, the operas themes bear striking
relevance to todays social and political
climate. Donizetti contrasts Annas undoing
with the ascendency of the social-climbing
Jane Seymour, who has caught the eye of
Henry VIII and will become queen after
Annas decapitation. However, Annas
betrayal of a true love from girlhood haunts
her throughout out the story, reminding
Jane Seymour and audiences that dreams
of power cant buy happiness.
I started singing when I was 11, says
Radvanovsky. When I was 18 years old, I
said, By the time, Im 30, Im going to be
singing at the Met. This dream came true
for the singer, as did her chance to sing
with legendary tenor Placido Domingo.
She sang with him during Cyrano de
Bergerac on her 35
th
birthday, causing her
to ask the older legend what she should do
now that shed accomplished her goals.
He told me, Oh, Sondra. You must go
get a new dream.
Now in her 40s, Radvanovsky feels
that anyone, from the American people
trying to choose a president to a young
girl aspiring to be queen of 16
th
-century
England, needs to focus on the moment
at hand instead of an unpredictable future.
If [Anna] had lived in the moment, she
would have seen that she wasnt in love
with [Henry], but she was looking a year
ahead. We are looking into politics in the
same way. We put so much hope in these
dreams, hoping that Obama or whoever
continues down the road we want.
Lawless, a British native, sees the operas
connection to todays audience in a slightly
darker hue, recounting how Russian
President Vladimir Putin visited the United
Kingdom during the recent Olympics.
While there, he was asked about Pussy
Riot, the female punk band who staged a
protest act against Putin weeks before his
recent election to the presidency.
He said, I hope the courts will be
lenient with her, remembers Lawless,
and thats exactly a Henry [VIII] statement.
Its that kind of abuse of power that gives
this piece its ironic resonance. Henrys
abuse of power should make you as angry
as the Pussy Riot thing.
Washington National Operas next
piece, Mozarts Don Giovanni, follows
close on the heels of Anna Bolena and
opens Sept. 20. The infamous womanizer
of the title gets his karmic comeuppance
by operas end, attended throughout
by his long-suffering servant, Leporello,
played by gay bass-baritone Andrew
Foster-Williams.
I have played it once before, where he
was very dark, he says of the character.
Ive since come to realize thats not right.
It needs to be multi-layered. We need to
remember that its a dramma giocoso
a dark comedy.
The singer travels the world with his
partner, photographer Paul Foster-
Williams, who grew into an avid
opera devotee because of his 14-year
relationship with Andrew.
I didnt come from an opera
background, Paul says. Now, I would do
anything to go and see opera. It gives you
the most returns in any art form.
Paul compares opera with baseball, a
realization he came to after going to see
a Nationals game while staying in D.C. last
spring for Andrews turn in Werther.
I had no idea what was going on, Paul
says, laughing. If you go to the football or
soccer game and you dont know the rules,
you might not ever go to another game. Its the
same with opera. The more you experience,
the more you get it, the more you will be come
absolutely addicted to it, I promise.
The reasons people enjoy baseball is
because they understand the rules, Andrew
adds. They learned the rules, therefore
they understand the skill of the players.

Personnel outnumbers
thematic content in fall
theatrical season
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
The new theater season is upon us.
And while theres not a whole lot of LGBT
content among the offerings, there is as
always a wealth of gay talent making it
happen.
After a hiatus from the D.C. theater
scene, MaryBeth Wise has returned to
the stage. Wise, a talented and well-liked
local actor who is gay, is currently playing
half of a same-sex couple in Theatre Js
production of Annie Bakers comic drama
Body Awareness (through Sept. 23).
Set in Vermont, the comic drama explores
the reaction of Joyce (Wise) and her
more uptight partner Phyllis to a visiting
photographer and his male gaze.
During Wises several years off the
boards, she concentrated on her other job
(network consultant at Library of Congress,
National Library Service for the Blind and
Physically Handicapped). She also picked
up a degree in library science. But I missed
acting, says Wise. In Body Awareness my
character is going through a journey of self-
discovery. Learning about what she wants.
Its a wonderful part. Hopefully it will lead to
more opportunities. (washingtondcjcc.org)
Also this fall, Wises real life partner
Sarah Marshall is playing several parts
in the Shakespeare Theatre Companys
season-opener, Gogols satire of
provincial Russian bureaucracy The
Government Inspector (Sept. 13-Oct.
28). (shakespearetheatre.org)
At Tony Award-winning Signature Theatre
in Shirlington, the season has already
begun with a production of The Best
Little Whorehouse in Texas (through Oct.
7). Staged by the companys gay artistic
direction Eric Schaeffer, the rollicking musical
stars Sherri L. Edelen (as brothel madam
Miss Mona). The big cast features reliably
excellent Signature vets Matt Conner and
Stephen Gregory Smith (both gay).
Also at Signature, the companys
talented and versatile associate artistic
director Matthew Gardiner directs gay
playwright Christopher Shinns Dying
City (Oct. 2-Nov. 25). Its the story of
young man grappling with his identical
twins suspicious death in Iraq. Incidentally,
Gardiner, who is gay, is also a twin.
Following Dying City, Gardiner directs
Signatures production of the Tony Award-
winning musical Dreamgirls (opens
Nov. 13). (signature-theatre.org)
At Synetic Theater, up-and-coming
actor Alex Mills (see Queery on page
30) plays the challenging title role in the
companys season opener, Jeckyll and
Hyde (Sept. 20-Oct. 21). Synetic is a
movement-based company renowned for
innovative and athletic choreography and
hard-bodied casts. (synetictheater.org).
One Night With Janis Joplin opens
at Arena Stage Sept. 28 with Mary Bridget
Davies in the title role. Staged like a Joplin
concert, the piece was written and will be
directed by Randy Johnson, whos gay.
Kathleen Turner continues her run there as
Molly Ivins in Red Hot Patriot through
Oct. 28. (arenastage.org)
Alexandrias MetroStage opens its season
with Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and
Living in Paris (through Oct. 21), a musical
revue celebrating the work of the late Belgian
singer/songwriter. Respectively directed
and choreographed by the talented team of
Serge Seiden and Matthew Gardiner (both
gay), the production features a top-notch
cast including the talented Natascia Diaz
(who appeared in the 2006 Off-Broadway
production), Bayla Whitten, Sam Ludwig
and local favorite Bobby Smith (who is
gay) singing a score comprised of plaintive
ballads, rousing anthems, tango and rock.
(metrostage.org)
After Jacques Brel, Bobby Smith
directs the Olney Theatre Centers
production of Rodgers and Hammersteins
beloved musical Cinderella (Nov. 14-
Dec. 30). (olneytheatre.org)
In October, the Studio Theatre presents
the world premiere of Dirt (opens Oct.
17). Penned by Byron Lavery (the author
of Frozen), the play is described by
Studio as an exploration of the mess
people make of themselves and their
relationships. Part of the companys
Lab Series, the production is staged by
Studios artistic director David Muse and
reunites talented actors Holly Twyford
and Matthew Montelongo (both gay). The
talented duo has been successfully paired
before in Vassily Sigarevs Black Milk
at Studio and Douglas Carter Beanes
comedy The Little Dog Laughed at
Signature Theatre. (studiotheatre.org)
Fledgling company force/collision is
premiering Erik Ehns Shape (Sept. 20-
Oct. 6). Part of a series of 17 plays exploring
themes of genocide and reconciliation,
Shape centers on the lives of the two
African-American vaudevillians Billy
and Cordelia McClain as they negotiate
their identity as artists while struggling
with conditions of social and political
marginalization. The production has
been cast cross gendered, says director
John Moletress (who is gay), as both a
performance device for our ensemble and
also a homage to black vaudevillians of
the early 20th century who played cross
gendered roles. (force/collision.org)
Forum Theatre kicks off the season
with the world premiere comedy Holly
Down in Heaven (Sept. 27-Oct. 20),
written by young playwright Kara Lee
Corthron. Forums website described the
title character as a brilliant 15-year-old
born-again Christian, [who after becoming
pregnant] banishes herself to the
basement and condes only in her dolls,
particularly a life-size psychiatrist doll that
closely resembles Carol Channing.
Parker Drown plays Yager, the neighbor
suspected of getting Holly pregnant.
Drown (who is gay) won a Helen Hayes
Award for his performance as Angel, the
feisty drag queen battling gentrication
and AIDS in Keegan Theatres production
of the rock opera Rent. Forum Theatre
is in residence at Round House Silver
Spring. (forumtheatre.org)
A couple other theaters that always
have interesting productions and are
worth checking out include 1st Stage
Theatre (1524 Spring Hill Road) in McLean,
Va. (1ststagespringhill.org), Woolly
Mammoth Theatre Company (641 D
Street N.W.) in D.C. (woollymammoth.
net) and Olney Theatre Centre in Olney,
Md. (2001 Olney-Sandy Springs Road;

they will maybe realize that theyre bigots
and theyre ignorant and possibly our show
can usher in a little more acceptance. I
dont expect it to change anyones life,
but I do think one of the wonderful things
about television is its ability to start a
conversation, to inspire people to have
those water cooler chats maybe the next
day. It starts that discourse.
King, a British actress with extensive lm
and TV credits, says realizing the show was
drawing controversy was the biggest thrill.
Its bringing up topics and questions
and ideas that maybe people havent
had to consider before, she says. Its
a privilege to be doing something thats
starting a great conversation.
But if the show takes off, where could it
possibly go once the pregnancy storyline
is played out? Some have questioned
whether theres enough meat to the
setting to warrant a long-running series.
Rannells says all early signs are great as
far as hes concerned.
Were shooting the fth episode so far
and weve read six scripts so far and I have
to say, the shows just keep getting better
and better. If youre asking what the second
season, the third season and so on will look
like, we dont think of it that way. The main
reason we all signed up was because of Ryan
and Ali and I think when you see the rest of
these episodes, youll see that its not only a
great set up, but in the following episodes,
it really does explore the depth of each
character and make them each indelible.
Ryans just been extraordinary,
King says. Hes got such a wonderful
reputation for not being too kind of
plucky and fake. Hes very to the point and
personally, I absolutely love that. Hes so
candid and so clear in his ideas in what
he wants and Im very happy to be there
when hes directing.
And though he hasnt said much about
his personal life, Bartha admits playing
gay with Rannells has been easy.
From the rst time I looked into
Andrews eyes, I knew I could fall in love,
Bartha says. I have such a respect for
him as an actor and as a person that it
was immediately apparent to me that this
could work. I just thought he was a funny,
good looking, talented guy and hes easy
to be around, so that was the basis of it.
I really wanted to play it as a real couple
who love each other and have struggles
just like everyone else. Ryan keeps
reminding us of that all the time. Hes
always saying, Lets keep this as real as
possible. Its funny, but its also very, very
real. Its not a sitcom in the classic sense.
And while its ultimately meant to
be light hearted and comical, the cast
says they hope viewers will take away
something deeper.
