GBC: I have one question Mahārāja. Srila Gurudeva: What? GBC: You mentioned how mañjarīs who are not kāmātmika. Srila Gurudeva: No, I have not told so. GBC: How they are. You mentioned how they are. Srila Gurudeva: Yes. GBC: So, the symptoms of kāmātmika are embracing, glancing, but the… Srila Gurudeva: All they are getting through Śrīmati; by seeing everything. GBC: What is there, um…. Srila Gurudeva: Everything is there, but it is through Śrīmati. If Kṛṣṇa is meeting Śrīmati, they think that we are meeting with Kṛṣṇa. All the symptoms that Rādhikā, Śrīmati, has – (then) every symptom is manifested in sakhīs. Not understand? GBC: No, I understand, uh, do they have a uh... What is their mood when they see Kṛṣṇa directly? Srila Gurudeva: They get more thing. No question of directly. After world you will know. Everything will not be known. So, it has been warned that those who have no lobha (greed) they should not read, see, hear nor do anything. Because they want to taste it as they are in this body – but this is not the thing of this body. And if any greed comes {*nahi} śāstrī (scriptures) yukti (logical arguments) – nothing worldly yukti . Nothing is apekṣā (reliance on); nothing is there to wait for all these things. I want to go there very quickly. No? Then I will not go by this path, I will go straight, whether there are thorns or anything. I will not go by this way or that way. Understand? GBC: Yes. Srila Gurudeva: This question is like this, “I should go by here and there and here.” They don’t want to wait (for) anything. There is no English word here with me so that I can express my idea. Here I can express in Hindi or Bangla. Can you explain what I want to (say)…? GBC: I think you are saying that when there is greed then one goes directly without need of any other prompting. Not even scriptures... He won’t need even to hear from the scripture he will go because of his own greed. That is what I understood. And so, if there 1

are too many questions about why or any doubt then this means no greed. Srila Gurudeva: Then there is no greed. And actually I have no greed, something (giggles). If I have greed to anything and a question will arise that, "It is not so beautiful not so sweet." ‘He will tell that, "No mind. I will have to take that thing." That is greed. This is going on as a class. As a general class. These things can not be told in this general class. What should I tell? So many persons, so many persons. I hesitate to tell all these things. Very, very hidden things. Next 20th śloka. What is the śloka? (Vilapa-kusumanjali) We have (reviewed up to) about 17th śloka.
ati-su-lalita-laksaslista-saubhagya-mudratatibhir adhika-tustya cihniti-krtya bahu nakha-dalita-haridra-garva-gauri priyam me caranakamala-sevam ha kada dasyasi tvam
[O queen whose fair complexion scratches with its nails the pride of yellou turmeric when happily marking my arms with auspicious markings embraced by charming red lac will You give me the dear service of Your lotus feet? Vilapa-Kusumanjali (17)]

We have come to this śloka, now Śrīmati Rādhikā, with her companions, associates, have returned from nisanta-lila. Kṛṣṇa has also returned to his Yaśodā bhavana (home), sleeping so fast. Śrīmati is also sleeping – so sweet nidrā (sleep). She is in... Raghunātha Dāsa Gosvāmī, he is in a mood of a sādhaka but he fills all these things of siddha. The things are of siddha but he is trying to get as if a sādhaka wants. In the mood of sādhaka. He wants to serve Śrīmati Rādhikā. She has returned with Śrīmati. She is in sleep but he is not sleeping. He is thinking (about) the other sevā when, "She will awake what should I do?" So, he is preparing all these things when She will awake. So, he is thinking and praying that sevā I should do.
praksalya pada-kamalam krta-danta-kastam snanartham anya-sadane bhavatim nivistam abhyajya-gandhitatarair iha taila-puraih prodvartayisyati kada kim u kinkariyam
[When will this maidservant brush Your teeth with a twig wash Your lotus feet and when You have entered another room massage You with scented oil? Vilapa-kusumanjali (Text 20)]

She is telling, kim u kinkariyam. u means “Oh.” "Oh, Rādhe! I am kinkari (maidservant) that (is) my self. I am (nandisa). I am kinkari. I want to do some sevā. 2

When She will awake I will first amend when She awakes. He takes some water (and puts) on (Her) mouth, eyes. When we from sleep awake, we do praṇāma to our respected gurudeva first. And then guru-paramparā from under to top. Guru, paramguru, parapara-guru and to Kṛṣṇa and to Rādhikā, Vraja, and all the places of Vraja. All the kinkaris of Kṛṣṇa, Śrīmati Rādhikā, and the associates of Caitanya Mahāprabhu, Navadvīpa dhāma, (and the) associates of Puri. All we do praṇāma. Then (we say the) vande ’haṁ (Maṅgalācaraṇa prayer page 1 of Śrī Gauḍīya Gīti-guccha). This śloka and any other ślokas which we love. Then we go to (the) bathroom and do all these things. Here he is waiting for Śrīmati Rādhikā. He has brought very good water, scented water. Some oil mixed with champhor, very soft and scented, to do like this and everything. All these things. Very red leaves of mango and other things. Here we think we should know that Śrīmati Rādhikā's svarūpa is bhāva maiyī. Everything of Śrīmati Rādhikā, (from) top to bottom, (is) of Kṛṣṇa prema. So, she is called bhāva maiyī. In Caitanya-caritāmṛta it has been stated: prema (indistinct) of Raghunātha Dāsa Gosvāmī. That from Caitanya-caritāmṛta it has been told that: (reading from book) Śrīmati Rādhikā's everything is of mahābhāva – mahābhāva maiyī Śrīmati Rādhikā.
hlādinīra sāra ‘prema’, prema-sāra ‘bhāva’ bhāvera parama-kāṣṭhā, nāma — ‘mahā-bhāva’
[The essence of the hlādinī potency is love of God, the essence of love of God is emotion [bhāva], and the ultimate development of emotion is mahābhāva. CC Ādi (4.68)]

mahābhāva-svarūpā śrī-rādhā-ṭhākurāṇī sarva-guṇa-khani kṛṣṇa-kāntā-śiromaṇi
[Śrī Rādhā Ṭhākurāṇī is the embodiment of mahābhāva. She is the repository of all good qualities and the crest jewel among all the lovely consorts of Lord Kṛṣṇa. CC Ādi (4.69)]

So, she is of mahābhāva svarūpine.
hlādinīra sāra aṁśa, tāra ‘prema’ nāma ānanda-cinmaya-rasa premera ākhyāna
[“The most essential part of this pleasure potency is love of Godhead [prema]. Consequently, the explanation of love of Godhead is also a transcendental mellow full of pleasure.

premera parama-sāra ‘mahābhāva’ jāni sei mahābhāva-rūpā rādhā-ṭhākurāṇī
[“The essential part of love of Godhead is called mahābhāva, transcendental ecstasy, and that ecstasy is represented by Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. CC Madhya (8.160)]

mahābhāva Ujjvala cinta Ujjvala-bhāva is Śrīmati Rādhikā. She takes three times bath. So, her body becomes so beautiful by snāna; snāna means bath. In the morning, in the noon, and in sandhyā, evening. Raghunātha Dāsa Gosvāmī tells it from (his) inner most ātmā. We can only imagine it from outside. There would be some wrong idea but we should try to avoid wrong ideas and to take the inner meaning of all these things. When bhāva comes not a smell of our suk (happiness) is there. Understanding? GBC: Yes. Srila Gurudeva: Nothing. No selfishness. Nothing is there. So there is no smell of kāma there. So, there should be no anything, worldly thing, in that thing. Raghunātha Dāsa Gosvāmī is on the same level and so he is thinking all these things. He is now, Raghunātha Dāsa Gosvāmī, is seeing something. When he returns, Svāminīji returns from nisanta-lila and (She is) sleeping. After some time She sees that Mukharā is coming. Who is Mukharā? GBC: Grandmother of Rādhikā. Śrīla Gurudeva: Grandmother of Rādhikā. She loves Rādhikā more than her mother; no(t) less than her mother. Her mother doesn’t come daily to see Śrīmati Rādhikā, but she comes and always loves Śrīmati. When it was morning and sun was to rise, she comes, “Oh, pautrīm! Pautrīni! Where are you? Where are you?" Pautrīm means – granddaughter. "Oh, my lovely Granddaughter where are You? Where are You?” She receives no response. She thinks that she is in sleep. Why she is in sleep? Sun is to rise. All the eastern horizon becomes red. She should now awake. But still she saw that Lalitā, Viśākhā, Citrā – all are waiting for (the) waking of Śrīmati Rādhikā. They told that she is sleeping. She at once called Jaṭilā-devī and both goes there. But Jaṭilā is somewhat behind and she enters at once. Jaṭilā can not go directly (because) she is mother-in-law. So, there is some shame (reservation) to wait. But she can not wait. From childhood, when Śrīmati Rādhikā was with no cloth, nothing, and she was protecting and loving and 4

nursing Śrīmati Rādhikā. So there is nothing to see whether she is naked or anything. She enters. All the sakhīs are waiting for Śrīmati Rādhikā. She began to cry. Who? Mukharā began to cry, “What I am seeing? It is very wonderful (strange). Yesterday, in the evening, I saw that (a) thin, yellow shawl was on the neck of Kṛṣṇa, here. Why it is on the body of Śrīmati Rādhikā? Why?" She was astonished. She is old lady but knows everything. She has passed this stage. So she was at once (was) astonished and she was confused. Whether it is of Kṛṣṇa. I saw it yesterday. So, in her mind it came that how that same shawl came on Śrīmati Rādhikā's body. She came and told Viśākhā and Lalitā all heard this. They thought that, "Oh, surely this is the shawl of Kṛṣṇa. We have not used to mark that thing otherwise we would have removed it but we have no chance. We have no our attention towards this thing. What to do?" Viśākhā at once did something. She said, “You are (an) old lady. Quite (an) old lady and in old age the intelligence (buddhi) becomes upset. Upset buddhi means…? GBC: Fool. Srila Gurudeva: Not fool. She can not say (that) because Mukharā is like her grandmother. But she told her that, "The power of your eyes has been diminished; about to be vanished. You are not clearly seeing. You don’t see that rays of sun are coming and rays of young, rising sun, like (indistinct). So, Śrīmati's pītāmbara, not pītāmbara but umbar, is nīla, nīlambar, blue, but yet some rays mix with it to appear yellow. Oh, see, see, the suns rays are raising." She did like this (pointed toward the sun) and Mukharā at once began to there. And her attention was toward the sun. And at once she (Viśākhā) looked towards Rūpa-mañjarī or Tulasī-mañjarī, she at once, in a moment, she changed the umbar was given and pītāmbara was taken. "Oh, jarāti" Jarāti means old age. "Oh, jarāti (old lady) see? Come. Come here. Come here." And she brought her toward the nīlambar and asked, “Whether it is nīlambar or pītāmbara you can see.” Oh, she thought certainly I am getting old and my (indistinct) has gone. So, I have done mistake. Then Lalitā, Viśākhā, Citrā all became made a show of anger, that we are so angry. So, she was in a hurry. No, no I have not told anything. I am just going. So, she returned. They all became so pleased there. Then they were ready. Now Śrīmati Rādhikā has awoken. And all other mañjarīs, Rūpamañjarī, Rati-mañjarī, Tulasī-mañjarī, have brought golden or marble seat, and they were 5

ready to take Śrīmati Rādhikā to sit on that and to give water all these things; and they were ready to serve Śrīmati Rādhikā. In the meantime, they saw that Madhurika, one sakhī of Śyāmala, is coming. Madhurika told that, "My sakhī Śyāmala has come. She wants to meet Śrīmati Rādhikā. Rādhikā became so pleased and all other sakhīs became so pleased…. END TAPE……..

(begin 1991_11_19_VRINDAVAN_DARSHAN TAPE_20_B) Srila Gurudeva: (…begin in middle….) For the cows, Śyāmala devī. Śyāmala is with Suvid sakhī. You remember Suvid sakhī? Who is she? Devotees: Um, Older…equal...dear...there are four kinds. Srila Gurudeva: svapakṣa, vipakṣa, taṭastha, suhṛda. Here suhṛda. Not to svapakṣa, but not vipakṣa; not friend of vipakṣa but friend of svapakṣa – it is called suhṛda-pakṣa. They can talk everything easily and heartly. So, Śyāmala came. She came to take bath. No? What is water there? There Śrīmati Rādhikā is pond, sarovara. Her bhāvas are water. And He wants to take bath in that water, not in any Yamunā or any water. He has come to take bath. Now, He has come nearer to (this), means that kuṇḍa, sarovara; sarovara is Śrīmati Rādhikā. She came to hear what happened last night and how Śrīmati Rādhikā met Kṛṣṇa. When she came Śrīmati Rādhikā was so much pleased and went forward and embraced Śyāmala, “Oh Śyāmala today is good morning, supravat. Supravat you know? GBC: Good omen. Srila Gurudeva: Why good morning? Good morning is not praṇāma. Good morning today. Why? "Because I have seen you. I was so much sorry. I was in viraha; seperation mood was with me. Now I have seen you and I am feeling so much better. So this morning is so good supravat. But I wonder that I have a tree, prema-kalpa-taru, tree, and tree is prema, Kṛṣṇa prema. Tree is growing on. Leaves of trees and branches are also growing on. The tree is so much green so beautiful – everything – but no fruit. Today is a good morning because you have come and I am thinking that this morning is so good because I have seen you and by the effect my trees will give any fruit. I was waiting for you. Now I hope that this tree will first have very good flowers and from flowers the fruit will come." Śyāmala told that, "I am thinking you are telling so but fact is not there. I am seeing that the tree has grown in fullest form and it is full of very scented flowers. And very sweet and golden type of fruits have come out; and these fruits are in ripen stage; and I am seeing that you are always taking these fruits and always you are tasting; and while tasting so much always you have something. When a mango is taken the first rāsa of mango is bitter and gives something sore. I am seeing that by taking the juice of that rāsa, is the effect of that, so much things have been done. I am seeing symptoms and I am seeing also that the red color of that fruits have come on your eyes reddish. Why reddish? (The) whole night, perhaps, you have taken the taste of that fruit and so all thing 6

has come on our eyes. I also see that the juice of that fruit, by taking so much, drops have come upon here. I am seeing that everywhere that rāsa has come and your cloths, your everything has so much symbols of taking rasa but yet you are telling that my trees have no fruit – but I am seeing that you are taking always and tasting always that fruit. But you are saying...(no fruit)." Śrīmati Rādhikā told, "Oh sakhī, don’t disturb me and give prema to my heart. I don’t know (this) taste and I have not seen that fruit, but you can not tell a lie." As if in rainy season (the) whole atmosphere is covered with very black clouds. Rain is dropping. And no trace of Chandra is there, almost all completely dark. In the same time lightening flahes, thunder bolt comes, and goes in any second. Then our eyes becomes blind and at time we can not see anything and after that so dark comes. They feel more darkness than first. If darkness and darkness is there we can see something. But if disturbed by thunderbolt our eyes are disturbed and we can not see anything. So, as if for a moment as (a) thunderbolt has been seen. So, I have seen Kṛṣṇa so very lean and thin. It means as if there is fire and if one drop of ghee is given like this – what becomes? It goes away quickly and increases the fire. So, that darśana of Kṛṣṇa, that seeing of Kṛṣṇa, makes me made me more and more unhappy. Vipralambha-bhava was there. I have no taste, I have nothing, I don’t remember anything; like after (a) thunderbolt the darkness comes. I am tasting only that darkness. Śyāmala told that, "I am understanding something. When anyone takes, he is very thirsty, and takes water, he doesn't realize the tastes of water, only drinking up to full satisfaction. No tendancy to taste it, only to quench his thirst. If anyone asks what is the taste of water, 'Oh I have not seen towards that, I only took water.' So you have taken water, rāsa, but you have not tasted, then again you will have to śyām-guru and you should read again to taste, not to take, not to meet, but to taste you should." Understanding? "In śikṣā there is practical and theoretical, both not at (the same) time. So, theoretical you have taken but not practical. Now you should learn again, go again next day and again learn it." Then Śrīmati Rādhikā told, "I am of very weak mind and I fear that person. I don’t want to make Him guru. I am not able to read from Him. but I am seeing that you are so much qualified and your mind is so much grown and really you can understand practically and theoretically. That I can not do. So, I think it will be better that you should go and learn and then tell to me. I fear him, so I will not go." So, all things are here in who? Tulasī, Rūpa mañjarī, Lalitā, Viśākhā they are hearing and tasting; more than what Śrīmati is tasting. Being a mañjarī they are tasting everything. They are only drinking it by their ears. After that Mādhurikā and Śyāmala...Śyāmala embraced Śrīmati Rādhikā (and said), "Sakhī, if there is no fruit but I see that your tree is full of fruits and if not then I see that certainly in a few days you will also see that it is so full of fruits. Very beautiful and 7

sweet fruits are there." So, laughing and embracing she went away. Then they were ready So, here after that

They have brought water from Rādhā kuṇḍa, mānasi Gaṅgā and Yamunā. They have scented it and (put) soil and everything mixed and they took Śrīmati Rādhikā on the sitting place, they untied the thick veṣa of Śrīmati Rādhikā very thin, fine, white cloth and in (a) simple manner they gave to Śrīmati Rādhikā. And they gave (to her feet) and they took very fragrant oil and they gave it on the head of Śrīmati Rādhikā and all over her body. Any sakhī can not do this. Lalitā, Viśākhā can not do this. The entire body they gave (oil) and in such a manner that Śrīmati Rādhikā thought that Kṛṣṇa is doing so. They know how Kṛṣṇa massages and they have learned how to massage from Kṛṣṇa. So, they are doing all this sevā and at that time they are talking only of Kṛṣṇa and all these things. At the same time Dhaniṣṭhā sent any sakhī to Śrīmati Rādhikā and she is telling at the same time when all was given, that Kṛṣṇa came from nisanta-līlā and he was sleeping at the same time sun was ready to rise up. Yaśodā Devi, with Pūrṇimā, went to Kṛṣṇa and they were waking Kṛṣṇa, “Oh, lal." And she doing so, Kṛṣṇa was lying on the bed and Yaśodā gave her elbow across Kṛṣṇa by right and with with left hand she took the head of Kṛṣṇa and kissed Kṛṣṇa and calling Kṛṣṇa, “Cows are waiting for you, your friends are waiting for you and you are now sleeping?” She saw some marks on the mouth Kṛṣṇa, “Oh these naughty boys are so, cañcala, restless, that they do like this in wrestling. Perhaps cows are moving towards thorns and Kṛṣṇa runs and they don’t go and the thorns do like this. At the same moment Madhumaṅgala came, “Oh sakhā! Oh Kanhaiyā! Oh Kanhaiyā!” Who is telling? That sakhī that is coming from Dhaniṣṭhā and seeing all these things, telling to all gopīs, and gopīs are enjoying all these things. She is telling that, when she saw and was thinking how these scratches came, at once Madhumaṅgala came, “I know. He was playing with sakhī.” Sakhī, there are two meanings of sakhī. Sakhā, in Sanskrit word, the word is sakhī and sakhā, male and female both, Yaśodā thought he is telling of sakhī means sakhā and Kṛṣṇa is at the same mood (motioning, gesturing) to Madhumaṅgala, “Don’t tell.” Madhumaṅgala is telling, "I will disclose everything (laughter among devotees). So, they are seeing all these things. After that Kṛṣṇa awakened and he was alert. If Madhumaṅgala tells everything it will be so “fact of sin.” He told like this, "I will give you laddu; don’t disclose. And if you tell, I will beat you." Madhumaṅgala began to laugh and he hid that fact. After that Kṛṣṇa took water from his friends and Yaśodā Maiyā and 8

Rohiṇī didi washed His mouth and (He) drank something and went to Godruhan and here sakhīs are making washing and doing all these things.
abhyajya-gandhitatarair iha taila-puraih

Sakhīs are hearing these facts and they are taking bath in that hari-kathā, Kṛṣṇa-kathā and they are making reading Śrīmati Rādhikā for all these things.
taila-puraih / prodvartayisyati

(At) any time a chance will come, that we will serve Śrīmati Rādhikā in (such a) manner. This is the prayer of (Raghunātha Dāsa Gosvāmī). This is called bhāva-maiyā-sevā. We should not do and enter now in unqualified stage. We can hear and we can pray to our gurudeva, vaiṣṇava, Kṛṣṇa, and His associates. We are always telling that there are two kinds of gopīs, persons, devotees, sādhaka: those who serve Kṛṣṇa, and those who want to serve Śrīmati Rādhikā. Here we should take the sanga of, association of, not of Kṛṣṇa sevaka, whether it is sajātī; but looks sajātī is of Rādhā, sevaka, abhimāna, those who have. This is sajātī or snigdha. This is also for: (quotes verse) They want all these things but they have not got yet. So, if a person has a greed like this and Śrīmati Rādhikā and Her associates and especially of tat-tad-bhāva-icchāmayī gopī. Then we can advance in doing sādhana bhakti of rāgānuga. Vas (finished for today). GBC: Mahārāja do you know of Vṛndā-kuṇḍa? Srila Gurudeva: What? Vṛndā-kuṇḍa? Where? GBC: Near Nandagaon. Have you ever seen or heard of that? Srila Gurudeva: I have not seen in any book. There may be Vṛndā-kuṇḍa in Nandagaon but I have not seen. We have seen Lalitā-kuṇḍa and other kuṇḍas are there. I will have to see whether there is.
