A guide to 8th Grade “Flipped”

United States History
Welcome Students (and Parents!):
You have an exciting year of History ahead in our classroom! However, things will be a little bit different than what you may have been used to in the past, you see my classroom is a “Flipped Classroom.” I’m sure you are wondering what a flipped classroom is. In the following pages I will explain what it is, and how it will make our year together exciting!

What it’s not!
I can’t promise it won’t involve work, reading, writing, research, thinking differently than you may have ever thought, but I can promise that if you try your very best you will meet success. This class will look like no other class you have had before.

When you think of history class, you probably picture or assume that I am going to give a lecture each day, you will take notes, and then go home and do a worksheet, then take a test in class over material I presented to you.

That may have been the case in a traditional history class, but in the flipped class we

reverse that. No more lectures! No more traditional worksheets for homework! In fact you’ll be watching videos for part of your homework! How does this all work? Keep reading to find out....

What will my “homework” look like? I don’t have homework??
Well that’s not entirely true, you do have homework, it just doesn’t look like what you’re used to. Homework is completed over the course of a unit, and you go at your own pace.

Each unit at home you will:
Watch 2-3 videos online They are made or found by me and shared with you on Edmodo They are typically 10 minutes or less in length You can watch them on the computer, tablet (like an ipad), PS3, smartphone, or any device with internet access

While you watch the videos you can use your Google Docs or notebook to: • Take notes that come from content in the video • Answer review questions • Make flashcards (Quizlet.com is great for this!)

Homework, part 2
After you finish each lecture, video and the pages you:
• • • take a short quiz (10 questions or less) online get an instant grade retake it as many times as you want until you get an 80% or better

Finally each unit at home you will:
•talk to your classmates on our online discussion threads •get extra help from peers or Mr. K through Edmodo. •Join in peer study sessions with your classmates

The best part is, as long as you get it all done by Friday you can do it any night you choose. Some students do it all at once, some break it up throughout the week, the choice is up to you. Everything you do in our online classroom is fully monitored by myself and the administration, so it’s a super safe place for us to learn!

You will sit in groups with your peers and collaborate on the tables, whiteboards and Edmodo, get ideas from each other, and help each other out, but turn in your own project at the end of the unit!

At the end of each unit, we...
1. Discuss the classwork with Mr Kipling (individual, small group or large group) 2. Present our projects or DBQ essay 3. Tests: What are tests like? Historians are gossips who tease the dead -Voltaire

We don’t have “tests” the way you have probably thought about them before.

After you have completed all of the document analysis, class discussions, and class work for a unit you can take the test. Tests Explained Tests are done when you are ready, on your own time. You take them right online and can complete them in more than one sitting. You may use your DBQ analysis notes and group discussion work to take the tests. They are essay and short answer based. Basically, they don’t require you to memorize information, instead, they ask you to take all the information you have learned and put it all together by forming an historical argument.
You may redo tests as many times as necessary until you get to 80%.

What is expected of me as a student?
You should watch the videos wh en you can devote the time to completing the work that goes with each video. Some stu dents prefer to watch all three lectures for the unit and do the work that goes with the m in one sitting. Other students like to bre ak it up throughout the unit. It is up to you, you should do what works best for you, as long as you always put your full effo rt in. You will get out of class what you put int o it!

It is up to you to communicate with me either online, or in person if you are having trouble with something. This includes before school, during class, after school, or online. I will assume you understand everything unless you ask...if you ask...we can work together to help you! If students are having technical issues with the videos, they need to communicate that to me so that we can come up with a solution before they fall too far behind.

How am I graded?
You do not have an average. Class grades are figured on a total points scale. We will call it being graded on a “Mastery” scale. Those who cannot remember the past are Mastery based grading means that you get credit condemned to for all the work that you complete at a “mastery repeat it. level.” Mastery is considered an 80% or better. To master a unit you must complete all tests at an 80% or better. You also must complete all work associated with the unit. Each term has between 6 and 8 Units. If you complete all the units at mastery level (80% or better) in a term, you get an A.

Mastery of Units counts for 50% of your overall grade. Grade breakdown is as follows:
•50% = Mastery of Unit •10% = DBQ Essay (1 per trimester is due; students choose topic from units covered) •20% = In Class Unit Projects •10% = Video Quizzes

• 10% = Exam

What is so great about Mastery Grading?

You take tests when you are ready. You may retake them until you master them. You are 100% in control of your grade. Because it is based on what you complete, you won’t have “one bad test” that ruins your average. In fact you don’t have an average at all, you just have a “number of units mastered” Your grade changes right up until the the end of the trimester! It really is up to you!

Extra Help: My prep period is 6th hour (1:50 - 2:45) and I am available most days after school until 3:30, just let me know you’re staying. We can also have periodic online extra help sessions that you can log into Edmodo from home.
