REMEMBER, FORGET, STOP, REGRET
These four verbs are important because of the way their meanings change when we use a gerund (verb + -ing) or
infinitive (to + verb). The differences are related to the time and the order of events.
REMEMBER
Infinitive: I remembered to call my mother.
MEANING:

Gerund: I remembered calling my mother.
MEANING:

FORGET
Infinitive: I forgot to set my alarm clock.
MEANING:

Gerund: I forgot setting my alarm clock.
MEANING:

STOP
Infinitive: I stopped to rest.
MEANING:

Gerund: I stopped resting.
MEANING:

REGRET
Infinitive: I regret to tell you that your grandmother died this morning.
MEANING:
____________________________________________________________________________
Gerund: I regret telling you that your grandmother died this morning.
MEANING:
____________________________________________________________________________
PRACTICE TIME: Here is some information about Tom when he was a child.
1. He was in hospital when he was four.
2. He went to Paris when he was eight
3. He cried on his first day at school.

4. Once he fell into the river.
5. He said he wanted to be a doctor.
6. Once he was bitten by a dog.

He can still remember 1,2 and 4, but he can’t remember 3, 5 and 6. Write about it.
