Reports to: Special Education Teacher Position Summary:

Dept./School: Vista Academy of Elgin

Assist special education teachers to provide for the instructional needs of students with disabilities, including students with Autism. Assist in the implementation of classroom programs, including behavior management and instructional programs. Assist individual and small groups of students with their assignments. Work under the general supervision of the principal and immediate direction of the Special Education teacher. Qualifications:

Education/Certification Associates Degree or Bachelors Degree High School Diploma and Meets NCLB Highly Qualified Experience Experience working with students with disabilities. Experience with students with autism preferred Experience with Applied Behavior Analysis preferred Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Ability to work with students with disabilities. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Strong computer skills to implement multiple and diverse programs. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.

Preferred KSAs

2-3 years of experience as a SPED Paraprofessional 2-3 years of experience supporting programs for students with disabilities.

Responsibilities and Duties:


Assist in the implement of ARD identified accommodations. Conduct instructional activities as directed by the special education teacher for individual students or small groups of students. Demonstrate support for student management policy. Assume responsibility for learning how to work with students individual needs. Help supervise special education students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom; this may include some campus duties. Keep special education teacher informed of special education student progress/needs Maintain confidentiality.

Help teacher prepare instructional materials and classroom displays. Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom. Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of materials and equipment. Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports. Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned. Perform special projects, during and after normal business hours, and other duties as assigned. Travel as required.

Equipment Used: All equipment required to perform jobs duties and task previously described. Mental/Physical / Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress. Physical demands include frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling; lifting of students. These are representative of the demands that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
