February 2012
February 1
Calls for a million-strong demonstration on the 3rd
under the slogan 'The President First'; the Brotherhood
and Salafis refuse to join.
Football spectators in Port Said stadium storm the pitch
after a match between Ahly and Masry Port Said.
Security at the match make no attempt to control the
crowds. The ensuing massacre leaves 77 Ahly Ultras
dead and hundreds wounded. The Ultras' own
estimates place the death toll at closer to 200, whilst
the Ministry of Health says it is 74.
That night, thousands of protestors march through the
streets of Cairo and 30,000 gather at the central railway
station to receive the bodies and the wounded with
chants of "We will claim your rights, we will fulfil your
dreams… Down, down with military rule!"
February 2
Huge demonstrations make their way from the Ahly
ground to the Interior Ministry, and by the evening tear
gas has returned to the streets where another episode
of battles between revolutionaries and security forces
is playing out in the streets surrounding the ministry.
Similar scenes ensue in Alexandria and Suez.
The battle continues for four days. Security forces use
tear gas, birdshot, live ammunition, leaving 15 dead
and thousands wounded. Protestors tear away the
barbed wire and pull down the barricades that the army
have built in Mohamed Mahmoud St and Falaki St.
February 3
The clashes continue in Mohamed Mahmoud St and
Mansour St whilst mass demonstrations for 'President
First Friday' take place in Tahrir Square and in Port Said,
Suez, Mansoura, Alexandria, Ismailiya and elsewhere.
The wounded are transported by motorbike. Protestors
raise Ahly and Zamalek Ultras flags, and blame the
SCAF for the Port Said stadium massacre, demanding
an immediate handover of power.
February 4
Clashes continue for a third consecutive night. The
police deny firing birdshot at protestors, while the
Military Council maintain silence despite the increased
chants against them in the street.
February 5
A women's march in the afternoon demands an end to
military rule and an end to violence against protestors,
and a delegation of activists and parliamentarians

meets with the Interior Minister, who pledges that tear
gas will no longer be used; gas canisters continue to
explode outside whilst the delegation are on the steps
leaving the ministry. The minister repeats his pledge in
front of parliament two days later.
Forty-three NGO employees, including 16 US citizens,
are transferred to court on charges of illegally using
funds to cause disturbances.
February 6
Heated disagreements take place in parliament
between a minority of deputies who blame the SCAF
for recent events and a majority who blame both the
revolutionaries and the Interior Ministry. The debates
end in a resolution to hold an official enquiry amid
disappointment in parliament’s performance.
February 7
The clashes come to an end. The parliamentary enquiry
committee finds that tear gas and birdshot were used,
and that the Interior Ministry was attacked with rocks
and Molotov cocktails. The Interior Minister again
denies all accusations, whilst the military build the
ninth cement-block wall in Mansour St.
February 8
Revolutionary political forces call for a day of mass civil
disobedience on Saturday 11th to commemorate
Mubarak's resignation, and the army take up positions
in streets throughout the country in readiness. Islamists
and the mainstream media attack the initiative,
describing it as an attempt to cause unrest and chaos.
February 9
The Muslim Brotherhood ask the SCAF to dismiss
Ganzouri's government.
February 10
On the 'Friday of Departure', thousands march on the
Ministry of Defence demanding an end to military rule.
Loud military music is played to drown out the
revolutionaries' chants.
The Military Council warn of conspiracies to bring
down the state, and dispatch forces throughout the
country to suppress any civil disobedience.
February 11
The streets are empty on the anniversary of Mubarak's
‘stepping-down’, and the Islamists and state officials
announce the success of their efforts to foil plans for
civil disobedience, but demonstrations on and around
university campuses affirm that Egypt has a promising
student movement.

events blames both spectators and security, limiting
itself to naming the chief of Port Said security and the
head of the city's criminal investigation bureau.
Tantawi meets top US general Martin Dempsey.
February 12
On the second day of civil disobedience, universities
form 'one hand' to confront the military, and workers
are threatened lest they join the disobedience.
February 14
Students from Cairo, Ein Shams, Helwan and Al-Azhar
universities march on the Ministry of Defence, whilst
tens of thousands join an Ultras march from the Ahly
ground to the Attorney General's office to demand
that the martyrs' murderers be brought to justice.
The Interior Minister performs poorly in the first
parliamentary hearing on the Port Said events.
In a meeting with a parliamentary delegation, Tantawi
swears on his commitment to a transition of power by
June 30th.
February 17
Marches in Port Said declare security responsible for the
stadium massacre and demand an end to military rule.
They are joined by artists and activists, amongst them
parliamentary deputy Ziad el-Elaimy, who criticises
Tantawi in a manner which the SCAF and other
deputies deem unacceptable. They demand he be
summoned for interrogation.
February 18
The Interior Minister announces that the ministry is to
be restructured, saying that the matter requires careful
examination and will take six months.
February 19
The Egyptian ambassador is recalled from Damascus
after sustained public pressure.
February 21
On International Students' Day, thousands of students
march to parliament demanding an end to military rule
and justice for the martyrs. A student delegation
refuses to meet El-Katatni after he demands a meeting
with just three of the twenty groups represented.
Divisions both in and outside the People's Assembly
over el-Elaimy's comments on Field Marshal Tantawi,
and confrontations break out between anti-military
protestors and a number of retired generals who have
gathered in front of the parliament building to demand
that el-Elaimy be removed for his 'rudeness'.

March 2012
March 1
Students at the German University in Cairo go on
hunger strike to protest against the expulsion of five of
their classmates who demonstrated to demand justice
for the Port Said martyrs. Videos made by the 'Liars'
campaign are screened on campus.
March 3
Members of parliament and legal activists berate the
government for submitting to American demands by
handing over those accused in the NGO foreign
funding scandal. Members of the Muslim Brotherhood
call for a vote of no confidence in the Ganzouri
government.
A political battle breaks out between the parliamentary
majority, composed of Muslim Brotherhood and Salafi
deputies, and other political forces over the
composition of the Constituent Assembly which is to
draft a new constitution. Islamists insist that the
committee must represent the majority, whilst others
argue that the constitution is a consensus agreement
that cannot simply be left for the parliamentary
majority to determine.
March 5
The SCAF claims it had nothing to do with lifting the
travel ban imposed on the Americans caught up in the
NGO funding case.
March 6
The Civil Aviation Ministry say that permission for the
landing and take-off of the plane that transported the
accused US citizens out of the country was granted by
the SCAF. The Minister for Civil Aviation explains that
he has no jurisdiction over military planes, or planes
belonging to foreign governments.
