We're excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for the Dixon GPS Program, which offers accepted students the opportunity for international travel, specialized courses, and intensive advising aimed at preparing students for the Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, and other prestigious scholarships. The program is open to all first- and second-year Honors students. To apply, go to the Honors College Web Page under "Current Students." Applications must be submitted by November 1, 2012. After the November 1 deadline, we'll be selecting students for interviews, which will be held right after Thanksgiving weekend. Then we'll wait until we have your Fall grades before making our final selections. Admitted students will join the program, and take their first GPS class, in January. We realize that Freshmen won't have their final Fall grades by the November 1 deadline. But if you're doing well by that point (at least a mix of A's and B's, pointing toward a minimum 3.60 GPA, please consider applying (sophomores need a 3.70 by the end of the Fall semester to be eligible). We welcome applications from students in all majors, as long as you have an interest in learning more about politics and policy, and want to expand your knowledge of the world, both in theory and practice. Goldwater Scholarship Information Sessions There will be 2 Goldwater Scholarship information sessions for Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors who want to learn more about this scholarship for students in Math, Science, or Engineering who plan careers in research. Visiting Speaker, David Blight, author of American Oracle Thursday, October 11 6pm Strom Thurmond Auditorium

American Institute for Roman Culture Interested in intensive Italian language and culture, art and architectural history, archaeological excavation, and sustainability? If the answer to the above question is YES!, then you are invited to an informational meeting on Monday, October 8 from 4:00 to 5:00pm in E304 Martin with Dr. Darius Arya, Director of the American Institute for Roman Culture (AIRC). Dr. Arya is making a special visit to Clemson and is particularly interested in meeting students who may be interested in a wide range of AIRC programs. These programs include short-term and semester study abroad programs, archaeological field work and conservation projects. Since its inception AIRC has hosted more than 1000 students in programs that include intensive Italian language and culture, art and architectural history, archaeological excavation, and sustainability. David Blight, Class of 1954 Professor of American History and Director of the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance & Abolition at Yale University, as well as author of American Oracle: The Civil War in the Civil Rights Era. Blights talk is entitled Americas Oracle? Civil War Memory, Past and Present. Blight is a leading authority on the US Civil War. He is an author, essayist, book reviewer and consultant, some of his other works include author of Race and Reunion: The Civil War in American Memory and A Slave No More: Two Men Who Escaped to Freedom, Including Their Narratives of Emancipation. The event is free and open to the public. The talk is co-sponsored by the Pearce Center for Professional Communication, the National Scholars Program and the Calhoun Honors College.

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Workshops - If you are a senior and are planning

to go to graduate school in fall 2013 in the sciences, engineering, mathematics, or some of the social sciences, you should apply for a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF GRF). As the oldest graduate fellowship of its kind, the NSF GRF has a long history of selecting recipients who achieve high levels of success in their future academic and professional careers. The reputation of the NSF GRF follows recipients and often helps them become life-long leaders that contribute significantly to both scientific innovation and teaching. Past fellows include numerous Nobel Prize winners, U.S. Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu, Google founder, Sergey Brin and Freakonomics co-author, Steven Levitt. Fellows share in the prestige and opportunities that become available when they are selected. Fellows benefit from a three-year annual stipend of $30,000 along with a $10,500 cost of education allowance for tuition and fees, a onetime $1,000 international travel allowance and the freedom to conduct their own research at any accredited U.S. institution of graduate education they choose. We will be holding a series of workshops to better acquaint you with the NSFGRFP and help you prepare a competitive application.
