(Continued on page 2)
The third commandment is, THOU SHALL NOT TAKE THE NAME OF THE LORD THY GOD IN VAIN. What comes to your mind when you read this command? Everyday, in every way, we hear Gods name taken in vain. The world just boldly speaks His name with curses and thinks nothing about it. Christians use Gods name very often to make their conversation sound more godly, but they really are not thinking about God. The dictionary says that vain is evil (as destructive), literally (ruin) or morally (especially guile); figuratively idolatry (as false, subjective), uselessness (as deceptive, objective; also adverbially, in vain. While the world doesnt really care about using Gods name in vain, we as Christian do care, but often we are not careful how we use His name. A mans name holds great importance to his life. It is our name that is written in the Lambs Book of Life! If our name is not there, we are not accepted as His child. As far as Gods name is concerned, there are many verses in the Bible that speak of the importance of His name. Psalms 124:8 says that our help is in the name of the Lord. Acts 4:12 says, Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. How are we doing when it comes to handling the name of our Lord and Savior? We are commanded not to take His name in vain! The fourth commandment is, REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY TO KEEP IT HOLY! When is the last time you honored the Sabbath day as a day of rest? You might say, We dont honor the Sabbath Day. We worship on Sunday. That we do. Do you know why you worship on Sunday? What about the commandment to remember the Sabbath Day? We say there are still ten commandments, but we ignore the Sabbath Day. The keeping of the Sabbath Day can be a very hard thing to understand how to accomplish. We go to church on Sunday to celebrate Jesus resurrection on the first day of the week. Plus, Paul says brings your tithes into the store house on the first day of the week. Does that mean because we go to church on Sunday we can drop this command? NO? The Jews were given the Sabbath Day by the Lord when they came out of Egypt. The Sabbath is very special to the Lord because that is the day He rested after He finished creation. The Lord gave the Sabbath to the Jews for a sign between Him and them. The Jews set up many rules and regulations for the Sabbath that the Lord never intended them to do. Man is always making his own rules and inserting them to be Gods rule. Remember, it was over the Sabbath that the Jews were angered at Jesus. Jesus healed on the Sabbath and His disciples plucked corn as they walked through the fields, because they were hungry. Jesus never broke the Sabbath, but He did break some of mens rules for the Sabbath. The Sabbath was given as a day of rest. Sabbath means seventh day, not necessarily Saturday! There was no calender when the Lord set up the Sabbath; it was the seventh day of creation. He worked six days creating and He rested on the Sabbath. While we worship on Sunday here in America, Thailand has already ended their Sunday. I dont know that we could find the exact day that the Lord rested, but we can rest after working six days. Some people have to work on Sundays, such as hospitals, police, nursing homes, and etc. What can they do about this command? They can work six days and rest on the seventh!!! The command is to rest. In Mark 2:27 we find that the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath. We are not justified by the law, therefore we are not under the law, but the law is good
for us. We are not under the dietary law, yet it is a healthy way to live. Keeping a Sabbath day is a way of blessing your life. Breaking the Sabbath in Israel was punishable by death! I think God was very serious about this. We must rest. God did! When we were first married Texas had what they called the Blue Law. There was no buying or selling on Sunday. Schools never thought about planning programs on a Sunday. That was observed as Gods Day. I remember there were two big stores, Atlantic Spartans and Gibsons that worked until they got the Blue Law taken away. Both of those stores closed a short time later. When Gloria and I worked for Bro. Roloff, he did not buy or sell on Sunday and therefore we did not buy or sell on Sunday either. There wasnt a lot of money while working there and it was so refreshing to go to bed Saturday night with a certain amount of money and then wake up Monday with the same amount. It was the only time we were not spending money! We were very aware of blessings while giving this time back to the Lord and not doing our own thing on that day. We do buy and sell on Sunday today but we try very hard not to plan to shop or do our personal work on Gods day. Everything today is planned on Sunday. Most churches have their services so everyone can have time to play and shop and make it a day just like the rest of the week. Are we saying that this commandment is not important to our lives? I think so. I challenge you to focus on making your Sunday (or your seventh day) as a day of worship and rest from your life and the life of your household. These first four commandments are pointing to our worship of God. The last six are pointing to our relationship with man. We will continue next month with the last six commandments. How about you? What is your relationship with God and how many commandments could you remember?

Dont think youre on the right road just because its a well-beaten path. When youre down to nothing, Gods up to something. Do not give up when you still have something to give. Some people are like blisters. They dont show up until the work is done. 3

not suppose to be living in that old flesh. I am suppose to be living through the Holy Spirit in my new birth. If I am living in that Holy Spirit, then it is not me but God that is doing the work and I can hold my head up as being royalty. I am the Kings daughter! Should I beLUKE 3:4-6 I came across these verses in my Bible reading this month and Im not gan to think that it is me that is good sure just how this prophesy is explained, but as I read it I thought about what Jesus and not God, then I think too highly of has done for my life. I thought about how His coming into my life has changed myself and I am a mountain that needs to be made low. Jesus will balance my my soul. life to where I will not be haughty or high minded and no good to myself or EVERY VALLEY SHALL BE FILLED! God. The valley is where the greatest part of our lives are lived. It is where the THE CROOKED SHALL BE fertile ground is and yet it is in the valley that we become so aware of our needs. MADE STRAIGHT! We are a needy people. We look at the mountains and think that success is there and we are stuck here in the valley. The valley is where the rubber meets the road. I have a bad bone problem that The valley is where we hunger and thirst in our lives and we all go through this. I became aware of when I was eleven I am reminded of the verse that says, For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filyears old. One day, when I was in my leth the hungry soul with goodness. (Ps 107:9) teens and my sister was mad at me, she called me Crip! I asked her what she Every low place in our valley can be filled by the work of the Lord Jesus meant by Crip. She said, You are a Christ in our lives. Since Jesus came into my life I am satisfied living in the valley crippled. You dont walk straight. Well, beis beautiful to look down at the valley from the top. The verse that came to my ing a teenager and very self conscious, mind when I thought about the mountain was, For I say, through the grace I trained myself to walk straight by given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more bending one knee just a little bit. Many of us have crooked bodies in one way or another, but it is very I have watched many Christians struggle with this knowledge, including important not to be crooked in our spirmyself. I wanted to make sure that I gave God all the glory and because of that I its. It is our iniquities that cause our thought I had to put myself down so He would look good. one, when the head allows but little reading or thinking - What a blessed prospect to be delivered from this wretched evil nature! HABITS OF SLEEP My own experience has been, almost invariably, that if I had not the needful sleep, my spiritual enjoyment and strength is greatly affected by it. I judge it of great moment that the believer, in travelling, should seek as much as possible to refrain from travelling by night, or from travelling in such a way as that he is deprived of the needful nights rest; for if he does not, he will be unable with renewed bodily and mental strength to give himself to prayer and meditation, and the reading of the Holy Scriptures, and he will surely feel the pernicious effects of this all the day long. There may occur cases when travelling by night cannot be avoided; but, if it can, though we should seem to lose time by it, and though it should cost more money, I would most affectionately and solemnly recommend the refraining from night-travelling; for, in addition to our drawing beyond measure upon our bodily strength, we must be losers spiritually. The next thing I would advise with reference to travelling is, with all ones might to seek morning by morning, before setting out, to take time for meditations and prayer, and reading the word of God for although we are always exposed to temptation, yet we are so especially in travelling. Travelling is one of the devils especial opportunities for tempting us. Think of that, dear fellow believers. Seek always to ascertain carefully the mind of God, before you begin anything; but do so in particular before you go on a journey, so that you may be quite sure that it is the will of God that you should undertake that journey, lest you should needlessly expose yourself to one of the special opportunities of the devil to ensnare you. So far from envying those who have a carriage and horses at their command, or an abundance of want of means, let us who are not thus situated rather thank God that in this particular we are not exposed
the temptation of needing to be less careful in ascertaining the will of God before we set out on a journey. CHILDREN (Conversion of Children) As far as my experience goes, it appears to me that believers generally have expected far too little of present fruit upon their labours among children. There has been a hoping that the Lord some day or other would own the instruction which they give to children, and would answer at some time or other, though after many years only, the prayers which they offer up on their behalf. Now, while such passages as Proverbs 22:6, Ecclesiastes 11:1, Galatians 6:9, I Cor. 15:58, give unto us assurance not merely respecting everything which we do for the Lord, in general, but also respecting bringing up children in the fear of the Lord, in particular, that our labour is not in vain in the Lord; yet we have to guard against abusing such passages, by thinking it a matter of little moment whether we see present fruit or not; but, on the contrary, we should give the Lord no rest till we see present fruit, and therefore, in pressuring, yet submissive, prayer, we should make known our requests unto God. I add, as an encouragement to believers who labour among children, that during the last two years seventeen other young persons or children, from the age of eleven and a half to seventeen, have been received into fellowship among us, and that I am looking out now for many more to be converted, and that not merely of the Duane the Sundayorphans, but of & Marilyn Gibsonand dayschool children. NEGLECT OF CHILDREN The power for good or evil that resides in a little child is great beyond all human calculation. A child rightly trained may be a worldd-wide blessing, with an influence reaching onward to eternal years. But a neglected or misdirected child may live to blight and blast mankind, and leave influences of evil which shall roll on in increasing volume

verted thinking and impure doctrines. When I think of being crooked spiritually, the verse that comes to my mind is, By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil. (Prov 16:6) I dont know about you, but the Lord has been purging me from iniquity on regular basis. As I show mercy to others and seek truth from Gods Word, God reveals the deceptions of Satan and delivers me from their destruction. I praise Him for all the crooks He has straightened in my life. I always say, I thank the Lord for delivering me from me! I am my worse enemy. THE ROUGH WAYS SHALL BE MADE SMOOTH! I love this one. He will remove the potholes that we have made in the road of our life. These potholes are failures and disobediences to the Lord. Most of the rough spots in our road we put there ourselves. Some are there because of others, but mostly we put the holes in our own lives by the way we respond to life. Jesus loves repairing our lives. The verse that comes to mind here is, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9) When God does the repairs to our lives He makes it like new! Sometimes when our city gets through patching our streets they are worse than they were to begin with, but not Gods work! God uses afflictions and corrections to fill the holes in our ways. These verses explain this. I know, O Lord, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me. (Ps 119:75) It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes. (Ps 119:71) My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth. (Prov 3:11-12) If the Lord is not repairing the pot holes in your life, you had better check up on your relationship, because if He loves you, He corrects you! Has Jesus made a difference in your life? Has His work brought you to the place of satisfaction. Is there a rest to your soul while living in the valley? How about your mountain? Are you balanced in your thinking of yourself? Has He straightened out your crooked places? What about the potholes? Are they being filled in? When is the last time you noticed what Jesus has been doing in your life. Are you praising Him for this work? Are you getting out of His way so He can do His work? Have you shared with others the beauty of His work in your life? If you say, No, He is not working in my life, then you had better check out your relationship, because He correctes those He loves! We always told our children that if the Lord loves you, He will not let you get away with evil. What a comfort to know that God is working to improve our lives at all times.
business do not sufficiently attend to the keeping of promises, and I cannot therefore but entreat all who love our Lord Jesus, and who are engaged in a trade or business, to seek for His sake not to make any promises, except they have every reason to believe they shall be able to fulfill them, and therefore carefully to weigh all the circumstances, before making any engagement, lest they should fail in its accomplishment. It is even in these little ordinary affairs of life that we may either bring much honour or dishonor to the Lord; and these are the things which every unbeliever can take notice of. Why should it be so often said, and sometimes with a measure of ground, or even much ground: Believers are bad servants, bad tradesmen, bad masters? Surely it ought not to be true that we, who have power with God to obtain by prayer and faith all needful grace, wisdom, and skill, should be bad servants, bad tradesmen, bad masters. THE LOT AND THE LOTTERY It is altogether wrong that I, a child of God, should have anything to do with so worldly a system as that of the lottery. But it was also unscriptural to go to the lot at all for the sake of ascertaining the Lords mind, and this I ground on the following reasons. We have neither a commandment of God for it, nor the example of our Lord, nor that of the apostles, after the Holy Spirit had been given on the day of Pentecost. 1. We have many exhortations in the Word of God to seek to know His mind by prayer and searching the Holy Scriptures, but no passage which exhorts us to use the lot. 2. The example of the apostles (Acts 1) in using the lot, in the choice of an apostle in the room of Judas Iscariot, is the only passage which can be brought in favour of the lot from the New Testament (and to the Old we have not to go, under this dispensation, for the sake of ascertaining how we ought to live as disciples of Christ). Now concerning this circumstance we have to remember that the Spirit was not yet given (John 7:39; 14:16-17; 16:7,13), by whose teaching
especially it is that we may know the mind of the Lord; and hence we find that, after the day of Pentecost, the lot was no more used, but the apostles gave themselves to prayer and fasting to ascertain how they ought to act. OBEDIENCE Every instance of obedience, from right motives, strengthens us spiritually, whilst every act of disobedience weakens us spiritually. NEW TASTES What a difference grace makes! There were few people, perhaps, more passionately fond of travelling, and seeing fresh places, and new scenes, than myself; but now, since, by the grace of God, I have seen beauty in the Lord Jesus, I have lost my taste for these things. What a different thing, also, to travel in the service of the Lord Jesus, from what it is to travel in the service of the flesh! SEPARATION UNTO GOD May the Lord grant that the eyes of many of His children may be opened, so that they may seek, in all spiritual things, to be separated from unbelievers (2 Cor. 6:14-18), and to do Gods work according to Gods mind! SERVICE TO ONES GENERATION My business is, with all my might to serve my won generation; in doing so I shall best serve the next generation, should the Lord Jesus tarry. The longer I live, the more I am enabled to realize that I have but one life to live on earth, and that this on life is but a brief life, for showing, in comparison with eternity, for reaping. SURETY FOR DEBT How precious it is, even for this life, to act according to the Word of God! This perfect revelation of His mind gives us directions for everything, even the most minute affairs of this life. It commands us, Be thou not one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts. (Prov. 22:26)
The way in which Satan ensnares persons, to bring them into the net, and to bring trouble upon them by becoming sureties, is, that he seeks to represent the matter as if there were no danger connected with that particular case, and that one might be sure one should never be called upon to pay the money; but the Lord, the faithful Friend, tells us in His own word that the only way in such a matter to be sure is to hate suretyship. (Prov. 11:15) The following points seem to me of solemn moment for consideration, if I were called upon to become surety for another: 1. What obliges the person, who wishes me to become surety for him, to need a surety? Is it really a good cause in which I am called upon to become surety? I do not remember ever to have met with a case in which in a plain, and godly, and in all respects scriptural matter such a thing occurred. There was generally some sin or other connected with it. 2. If I become surety, notwithstanding what the Lord has said to me in His Word, am I in such a position that no one will be injured by my being called upon to fulfil the engagements of the person for whom I am going to be surety? In most instances this alone ought to keep one from it. 3. If still I become surety, the amount of money for which I become responsible must be so in my power that I am able to produce it whenever it is called for, in order that the name of the Lord may not be dishonored. 4. But if there be the possibility of having to fulfill the engagements of the person in whose stead I have to stand, is it the will of the Lord that I should spend my means should be spent in another way? 5. How can I get over the plain word of the Lord, which is to the contrary, even if the first four points could be satisfactorily settled?
