News Letter Copy : Audience Release REVISED - 18th October For immediate release Be part of a unique, family-themed

event at Nottingham Contemporary
Are you interested in a day of discovery, story-telling and sharing ideas around the theme of families and how we live together? If so, TEDxLaceMarket is for you. It’s a unique, fun and educational event that’s taking place at Nottingham Contemporary on Saturday 24 November. Running from 9:30am to 4:30pm, TEDxLaceMarket will see a 100-strong audience of local people become a family for the day. ‘It’s set to be an exciting and challenging day,’ says event organiser Marios Perrakis. ‘We have ten amazing guest speakers, giving a global perspective to the family theme. We’ll be exploring questions like: How could we live better together? Is ‘family’ the most efficient, sustainable, loving and practical way of co-existing? What is ‘family’? And if we were to start over with a better understanding of the role ‘family’ plays in other cultures, how would we better design the cells that form ours?’ Guest speakers at TEDxLaceMarket will include the Chair and Founder of UK Co-Housing Netowrk, the owner and director from a local family-run businesses, a community focused social enterprise and the renowned American author, speaker and entrepreneur, C.C. Chapman. Each speaker will give an 18 minute talk on a family-related theme that’s personal to them – such as balancing work and home life whilst running a family-owned business, or describing how family units and structures work in different countries around the world. The TEDx ethos is ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’ so as well as listening to the speakers, you’ll be encouraged to share your own ideas and opinions on what ‘family’ means to you.’ You’ll watch family-themed videos and take part in discussions, games and activities with other audience members. Livescribes, a team of live illustrators, will be on hand to bring each activity to life by drawing the event as it unfolds – helping you really enjoy, understand and remember the day.

Your road to TEDx starts as soon as you buy your ticket. You’ll be invited to watch the organisers’ ‘Preptastic’ video diaries in the run-up to the event, so you really feel involved and part of the TEDx family when you arrive on the day. There’ll be no time to feel shy when you arrive as social trading cards company MeetMeme are running the ultimate in fun ice-breaking sessions. You’ll have your own personalised ‘Top Trumps’style trading card so you can introduce yourself and get to know other audience members. ‘TEDxLaceMarket is open to everyone,’ says co-organiser Caron Lyon. ‘But we’d especially like to see family groups – say Mum, Dad and two teenagers – who live in Nottingham coming along together. We want you to take the ideas gathered on the day away with you and talk about them at home afterwards. There’ll also be online videos and resources to help you stay in touch with your TEDx family and pass what you’ve learned on to others. In a nutshell, we’d like the event to change how you live together for the better.’ Tickets for TEDxLaceMarket, which include lunch, cost £12.50 each (£8.50 for under 16s) and are available online at www.tedxlacemarket.eventbrite.com. The event is non profit-making and all proceeds from ticket sales will go to charity. Under TEDx rules, audience numbers are limited to 100 so make sure you sign up soon if you’d like to attend. Notes to editors

About TED TED is a non profit-making organisation devoted to ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’. It started out in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with two annual conferences – the TED Conference in Long Beach and Palm Springs each spring and the TEDGlobal conference in Edinburgh each summer – TED includes the awardwinning TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Project and TEDConversations, the inspiring TEDFellows and TEDx programmes, and the annual TED Prize. Find out more at www.ted.com. About TEDx The TEDx programme gives communities, organisations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level. TEDx events are planned and coordinated independently. There are specific rules that each TEDx event must follow, such as engaging speakers on a non-payment basis; having a maximum audience of 100 people; and showing videos of previous TEDx talks as part of the agenda.

About TEDxLaceMarket How could we live together better? Is family the most efficient, most sustainable, most loving, and practical way of coexisting? If we were to start over with communities and societies, how would we design the cells that form them better? How do we make living with more than or equal to 2 people happen better? TEDxLaceMarket will examine, discuss and celebrate ideas, stories, propositions, and answers on the topic of togetherness. The agenda will include ten, eighteen minute talks by high calibre speakers, relevant videos from the TEDx archives, interactive games and activities. The audience will be asked to contribute on the day and leading up to the event. The event is being organised by Marios Perrakis along with co-organisers and local business owners, Caron Lyon and Phil Campbell. Find out more at www.tedxlacemarket.org.
