PDT-1 : PDT-1 : PDT-27 : PDS 32 : PT - 8 : A warning is displayed if the transmitter fails and the manifold Gas pressure is available but a shutdown is initiated if it isn’t. This converts the frequency inputs in Hz into rpm and monitors the health of the speed inputs. If two inputs are used, a warning is displayed if either input fails or if the difference between the two readings exceeds 50 RPM. A shutdown is initiated if all inputs fail. This can be due to hardware failure or if the difference between consecutive readings is excessive. This protects the turbine against excessive speed that could cause mechanical failures. This sets the overspeed limit as a percentage of the 100% rated speed. A fraction of the rate of change of speed is added to the speed and this compared against the calculated limit. If the limit is exceeded for one tenth of a second, a shutdown is initiated. A shutdown is initiated if the error from demand exceeds 10% for a second or more or if the position feedback exceeds the maximum for 2 seconds with the warning on position high already latched in. This task operates once the turbine start is complete. A warning is displayed if the PT exit temperature exceeds a warning limit. A shutdown is initiated if the PT exit temperature exceeds a shutdown limit. These limits are both parameters. During Starting : In Running : Once running, the warning is displayed or the shutdown initiated if the following conditions are met:The limit is exceeded by 15 degrees Celsius OR The limit is exceeded and the integral of the error in excess of the limit exceeds 25 Deg.C-Seconds This simply compares the PT exit temperature with a parameter to define whether the turbine is hot. This checks the 12 or13 PT exit thermocouples for IO failures. A warning is output if any have failed. The warning is made to flash again if the number of failed devices increases

A warning is displayed if a thermocouple deviates by more than the permitted amount or if the thermocouple falls below the low deviation limit. The deviation warning or low deviation warning is removed and then displayed again if the number of devices failing under that condition increases. 4 devices are failed by IO or as deviating low from the mean 3 devices are failed by IO or as deviating low from the mean for 30 seconds 2 adjacent devices are failed under any of the three conditions above for 5 seconds up to 9000 rpm or for 2 seconds thereafter. This task checks the health of the burner tip thermocouples and that the temperatures are not too high. If any thermocouple fails, a warning is displayed. A shutdown is initiated if the thermocouple fails for longer than 2 seconds. This warning is removed and displayed again if the number of failed thermocouples increases. A warning is also displayed for each thermocouple that exceeds a set limit. A shutdown is initiated if any of the burner tip temperatures exceeds the maximum permitted temperature. This maximum limit is calculated according to the percentage gas achieved and the warning limit is calculated as an offset to this. Bit words are set for those thermocouples that have failed or have caused high temperature shutdowns or warnings. PT : 259. For DLE variants, the pilot and primary splits are mapped against TFIRE, a calculated flame temperature. In order to be able to calculate this, the power turbine exit pressure is required. This is normally taken from the absolute pressure transmitter but must be within 0.03 Bar of the pressure expected which is calculated from a map against compressor exit pressure, otherwise the calculated pressure is used. The calculated pressure is also used if the pressure transmitter fails. In the event of the transmitter failing or if the transmitter reading falls outside of the expected limits for a set period, a warning is displayed. The calculated pressure is adjusted for the site altitude via a parameter.

For DLE engines, however, the 6 burner tip temperatures are monitored to determine when each can has lit. All 6 cans must be lit before inferring that the light up has been successful. This involves checking that each tip temperature has risen by a set amount from when the block valves opened and that all thermocouples are healthy; if a thermocouple is failed, light up cannot be detected. The rise in tip temperature required depends on the fuel on which the turbine is starting. To overcome possible noise on the tip thermocouple signals, the temperature rise must be seen for 3 consecutive samples. While fuel is on and the turbine is not lit, a second timer is running. If this timer reaches a set period for failure to light, a shutdown is initiated. This delay depends on which fuel is being used for the start. For DLE engines, this time is extended for each can detected as being lit, the amount depending on whether gas or liquid fuel is being used. On gas the maximum ignition period is limited to 20 seconds. The increment in ignition time for each lit can is adjusted accordingly to achieve this. This monitors for loss of flame from when the turbine lights to when the gas generator speed achieves 9000 RPM. A shutdown is initiated if any of the following conditions occur when PT exit temperature falls 10 degrees Celsius below the temperature at light up for over 0.5 seconds. Gas generator speed falls 5 RPM below the speed at light up. PT exit temperature falls at or more than a set rate while the gas generator speed is less than 7000 RPM. The rate is 8 degrees Celsius per second normally but is taken from a map against the difference between the current PT exit temperature and that at light up for DLE engines. Gas generator speed falls at or more than 10 RPM per second for a second or more PT exit temperature falls at or more than 25 degrees Celsius per second AND the gas generator speed falls at or more than 220 rpm per second AND either the fuel demand is increasing at 2000 kW per second OR the governor is controlling on the start fuel demand or on the power limit fuel demand.

The task is inactive until 9000 rpm on a DLE engine. Can flame failure detection up to 9000 rpm on a DLE engine is via the burner tip thermocouples. The individual PT exit thermocouple deviations from the average are compared against these limits. Any device that deviates from below the average by more than the major limit is defined as a major deviating device. Any device that deviates below the average by more than the minor limit is defined as a minor deviating device. The IO failed and deviation low failed thermocouples are also defined as major deviating devices. If a major deviating device is adjacent to a major or a minor deviating device for 2 seconds or more, a shutdown is initiated. Check the 6 thermocouples to see if any are falling. If a reading is falling at more than TIP_DROP_VAL degrees Celsius per half second, the thermocouple is identified as falling. If, however, the thermocouple reading is falling at or more than TIP_DROP_CANOUT degrees Celsius per half second for two consecutive samples, it is inferred that the corresponding can has lost it’s flame and shutdown is initiated. Each thermocouple is checked to see if it is below the mean burner tip temperature by more than CANOUT_SDN_DEV degrees Celsius. For any tip thermocouple that is low for 2 seconds or more, it is inferred that the corresponding can has lost it’s flame and a shutdown is initiated.
