OPEN CALL TO SUPER 8 CINÉASTES | 5th ANNUAL 1:1 SUPER 8 CINEMA SOIRÉE For the fifth time in South Florida, Black Iron Film Artist Collective and the original One Take Super 8 Event present the 2012 1:1 Super 8 Cinema Soirée. Twenty independent filmmakers and artists from South Florida will load their cameras to take part in this year’s spectacle. These 200 second films will display the diversity and creativity from different independent filmmakers of South Florida. WHEN WHERE ADDRESS INFO/PRESS CONTACT Friday December 7, 2012 | Doors @ 6:30 p.m. | Screening @ 7:30 p.m. IWAN The Bubble | Web | Facebook 810 NE 4th Ave. Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304 |Google Maps 1to1super8filmfestival@gmail.com | 954-762-5246 | Facebook Shane Eason, 1:1 Super 8 Cinema Soirée Director INFORMATION & HISTORY The original One Take Super 8 Event was established in 2000 by Canadian filmmaker Alex Rogalski as a way to help create more independent films by a variety of artists, while giving the local community an opportunity to view the films collectively. Using a super 8 camera is centered on the concept that this type of film, often discarded to antiquity in this digital age, is still an affordable film gauge for independent filmmakers. In recent years, more attention has been given to this film format, as it once sat on the edge of extinction. Now it’s effects are seen in major Hollywood films, music videos and mainstream television ads. Many of the super 8 events, such as the 1:1 Super 8 Cinema Soirée, are distinct film screenings, in that none of the films are viewed by the filmmakers before being screened. Participants are not allowed to edit or preview their films. What’s shot in-camera, is what’s shown. There is no physical cuts or splices allowed by the participants. There is no opportunity to make changes. This idea leads to some exciting and refreshing films, and a rare opportunity for a public viewing. The popularity of this noncompetitive festival has enabled it to return each year with more filmmakers participating. Hundreds of films have been created, collected and distributed for the One Take Super 8 Event. The event has also expanded to a number of cities throughout North America. The first being Montreal (2005) and the second being Fort Lauderdale/Miami (2006). Further, the 2006 event in FTL was the first time the event left Canada for the United States. The South Florida screening, coordinated by filmmaker and FAU Film Production Professor Shane Eason, has spawned a number of great films and has created a loyal following of underground attendees. Each year has held an impressive festive atmosphere. This year will mark the 1:1 Super 8 Cinema Soirée fifth year in South Florida. It’s quite the milestone and already a hot topic of discussion among those that yearn the sight and smell of super 8 film and the soothing sound of a super 8 projector. So go grab a camera, get some celluloid and shoot for this year’s 5th Annual 1:1 Super 8 Cinema Soirée. *Screening date, times, location and participants is subject to change.* The 5th Annual 1:1 Super 8 Cinema Soirée acknowledges the following for their generous support: Florida Atlantic University School of Communication and Multimedia Studies Florida Atlantic University Dorothy F. INFORMATION | RULES | REGULATIONS | 5th ANNUAL 1:1 SUPER 8 CINEMA SOIRÉE 1. The screening is limited to 20 participants. The event will be comprised entirely of new work. No old cartridges or reels will be accepted. The screening is scheduled for approximately 7:30 p.m. Friday, December 7, 2012 at IWAN The Bubble. It’s open to the public and donations or a small entry fee will be accepted at the door. Note that screening dates, times, location and participants is subject to change. Screening date, times, location and participants subject to change. 2. Participating filmmakers are responsible for acquiring their own super 8 camera, tripod, lights, and any other additional production equipment. You may find working cameras online; friends or family; thrift shops; or estate, garage, and yard sales. Prices for super 8 cameras are usually reasonable, but do the research prior to purchase, as some cameras can be priced high. Also, be sure that the camera, if recently found or purchased, is operating properly. If you haven’t already done so, shoot a test roll with the camera and send it to a film processing lab. There is nothing worse than burning a roll of film, sending it off, and having it return with problems such as light leaks, malfunctioning iris, focus, zoom, shutter...and so on. 3. You may provide your own cartridge of film, only if it’s one of the stocks listed herein. There is no Kodachrome available. It’s discontinued. If you choose to supply your own film cartridge, then you’ll pay a $15 processing/shipping/ handling fee. If you require a full cartridge of super 8 film, you’ll pay a $30 film/processing/shipping/handling fee. All payments must be made in U.S. currency and as cash or money order. The films will ship at one time to the lab for processing. This ensures the entire screening package remains intact through the night of the screening. The processing lab this year is PAC LAB INC in New York. 4. All film orders and payments must be received by 5 p.m. EST on Friday October 26, 2012. This will ensure that you receive the film promptly and find time to shoot your project. Therefore, the shooting period will begin October 11 and run through November 9, 2012. All available film stocks and payment options are listed herein. 5. As this is a special one-of-a-kind event with specific cinematic characteristics that have been imposed since the inaugural event in 2000, there will be NO opportunity to physically edit or preview your film prior to the event screening. Therefore, plan your shoot, keep notes, and only involve in-camera edit techniques. What you shoot is what will be screened! Note that a super 8 cartridge is 50 feet and has a run time of 3 minutes 20 seconds when projected at 18 frames per second. You may add 5 seconds to the run time. The organizers will be adding one title card per film of the participant’s name. 6. All exposed cartridges must be returned by 5 p.m. EST on Friday November 9, 2012. Further, a filmmaker’s information sheet and release form must be filled out. Films will be sent to the lab the following day. There will be no late exceptions! Send or drop off your cartridges of film to the following address, on or before the deadline: 1:1 Super 8 Cinema Soirée | c/o Shane Eason School of Communication and Multimedia Studies, Florida Atlantic University 111 Las Olas Blvd., AT-819 Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301 7. If you want to have SOUND with your film, which is encouraged, you may provide a live soundtrack at the event or a prerecorded track to play simultaneously with your film. If a sound track is not supplied, the film will be projected silent. Keep in mind that you will not be able to view your film before it is screened, so create the soundtrack accordingly. CD’s with proper high quality audio (MP3) is the preferred format and the run time for the sound track should be the same as the super 8 cartridge, 3 minutes and 20 seconds + 5 seconds for a name title. All sound tracks will be collected and situated together on one source then cued accordingly to the filmmaker’s project at the screening. If you’re providing live music or performance please submit a list of what sound requirements are needed. You’re responsible for providing musical instruments, additional amps, talent, props, etc. Sound checks are available 2 hours before the screening. All sound tracks must be submitted by 5 p.m. EST on Friday November 23, 2012. Drop off or send sound tracks on CD to the address listed above or e-mail the digital audio file.
