1.0 INTRODUCTION
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) established in 1969, is a comprehensive research university with 24 Schools, 14 Centers and 7 Units. Since inception in 1969, USM has undergone various phases of development, not only in graduating students to support the needs of the nation, but also more importantly, functioning as an impetus for the progress and nationbuilding. The university has been developing and expanding since its inception, which started with the enrolment of 57 science based students. Now, USM offers courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels to approximately 20,000 students. USM has also become a well-known university locally and internationally. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has been chosen by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education to implement the Accelerated Programme for Excellence (APEX) on 4th September 2008. Under the APEX proposal entitled, Transforming Higher Education for a Sustainable Tomorrow, USM has outlined its efforts in advocating the process of a sustainable development in ascertaining a more lasting future. In particular the survivality of the planet and humankind by ensuring the appropriate use of resources towards a greater understanding, respecting and even taking necessary steps to build a robust and balanced prosperous and sustainable future. In order to ensure USM as a successful university in the world ranking, it is essential to create a global collaboration between universities around the world in any perspectives. Through this effort, it allows the students to go further on their academic and leadership skills for a better Malaysia future engineer. Students should take this opportunity to help their university and country to achieve its goals. In carrying out the spirit of the universitys aspiration, the Final Year Undergraduate Students of Materials Engineering are organizing an educational trip to Bandung, Indonesia. The main reason Bandung is our targeted destination because its reputation in metallurgy MATERIALS ENGINEERING

machinery industries. Besides that, Bandung is known as a student city and one of the most renowned educational centers in Indonesia. In this trip, we will visit Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) which very well known, and established in Materials specifically in Metallurgy background and listed in top 100 QS World University Ranking 2011 for Engineering and IT category. ITB was founded on March 2, 1959. It consists of few campuses which cover a total area of 770,000 square meters. The present ITB main campus is the site of earlier engineering schools in Indonesia. Each campus is committed to academic excellence, strong social responsibility and active engagement in community services. For this trip, we will visit the Materials Engineering Department in Faculty of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and together with Materials related based industries. This trip will help the students to build their interpersonal skill, learn more about other country as well as strengthening the relationship between two neighbouring countries. Hence, through this project, many opportunities and international collaboration can be established and be a stepping stone for USM to gain the leader status as a top institution of higher learning in Malaysia and of the best in the world, in accordance with the universitys motto, We Lead.

7.0 PROJECT DETAILS/ACTIVITY

a) Interaction activity between USM ITB students Session 1 : Discussion Students from USM and ITB will be divided into few groups and they will discuss about the importance of environment sustainability.

Basically, Materials Engineering works on the relationship between structure-property, designing and engineering the structure of material to produce a predetermined set of properties. Plastic and polystyrene are materials developed which are relatively light in weight and widely used by all people. However, they cause a lot problems to the environment. Therefore, we came out with a main message of sustainability which will focus more on the impact usage of plastics and polystyrene. In detail, our students from USM will be emphasizing on some of our universitys major projects that have contributed immensely to sustainability as well as to promote the usage of paper bags among local students.

Session 2 : Games Students from USM will be organizing few interaction games.

b) Industrial Visit (Industry related to Materials Engineering) This trip will also expose the students to the metallurgy machinery industry in Bandung, Indonesia. Besides, it can also strengthening the bond between USM students and lecturers who will be joining this trip. Therefore, this is the best opportunity to learn the different culture of study in other country.

c) Travel to Orphanage Home A visit to an orphanage home will be conducted as to fulfill the objectives for this trip. By giving a piece of our contribution in terms of donation and warmness could bring awareness to both sides - the students and the orphanage. Moreover, by spending a half day in that environment would create a good interaction between both sides in motivating the students to appreciate what they have today.
