MD 500N Constructors Serial Number: ______________ Registration Mark: _________________ The limitations and information contained herein either supplement or, in the case of conflict, override those in the Flight Manual. When the aeroplane is flown for the purpose of public transport, the performance information contained in the Flight Manual and in any relevant supplement or change sheet shall be used in assessing the ability of the aeroplane to comply with the requirements of the relevant Air Navigation (General) Regulation. It is recommended that this same information is used by the commander before every flight, regardless of purpose, to satisfy himself that the aeroplane can takeoff, carry out the flight and lands safely in the conditions expected, so as to comply with the preflight action by the commander of an aircraft required by the Air Navigation Order.

SUMMARY OF REVISIONS
NOTE: Revisions are listed below by number with appropriate remarks. REVISION NUMBER Reissue #1

REMARKS This reissue of CSP520N1C reflects the ownership change from McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Systems (MDHS) to MD Helicopters, Inc. (MDHI). This reissue also standardizes flight manual supple ment format. Deleted detailed operational check of YSAS: this check is now part of Section IV of the basic flight manual. Revised VNE chart and provided examples for use of VNE chart.

PART I GENERAL
Design and construction: As part of the YAW Stability Augmentation System (YSAS), a YSAS fin position indicator is mounted on the instrument panel to show the present position of the right stabilator (fin) and assist the pilot in determining the functional status of the overall YSAS during forward flight.

PART II LIMITATIONS
Rotorcraft certification: The MDHI MD 520N (Model 500N) helicopter is eligible for certification in the United Kingdom in the Transport Category (Passenger). The helicopter may however be restricted to another category and to a particular use and this will be stated in the Certificate of Airworthiness. Flight limitations: When flown for public transport, the helicopter is classified in Performance Group B, and the true airspeed to be used for compliance with the Air Nav igation legislation governing flight over water is 125 KIAS. The helicopter shall not be flown for public transport when a hoist installa tion is in use, when an external freight carrier is suspended from the heli copter, or when spray or dusting equipment is fitted to the helicopter. Aerobatic maneuvers are prohibited. The total number of persons carried including the crew must not exceed five nor exceed the number of which seating accommodations approved for the use during takeoff and landing is provided. Children under the age of three years who are carried in the arms of passengers may be left out of account for this purpose. The minimum crew is one pilot. Night operations: Flight by night is prohibited unless the equipment required to meet the Air Navigation legislation is fitted and operative. Flight by night is prohibited with the YSAS system inoperative.

PART III EMERGENCY AND MALFUNCTION PROCEDURES ENGINE FAILURE CAUTION

In autorotation, indicated airspeed accuracy is diminished when flying below 40 KIAS.

YSAS MALFUNCTION
Indications: YSAS malfunctions are normally indicated by one or more of the following:
F

A one inch shift in pedal trim position.

YSAS fin position indicator shows the fin stuck full left full right or at some point in between

(forward flight only).

Aircraft oscillations in the yaw axis.

Procedures:
F

Turn YSAS switch OFF fin should return to its nominal (approximately mid travel) position on the fin position indicator and any shift in the ped al trim position should return to normal.

NOTE: With YSAS off, it is recommended that poweron descent rates do not exceed
1,000 ft/min for all gross weight and altitude conditions.
F

Continue to monitor aircraft response. If the malfunction persists, pull the YSAS circuit breaker.

NOTE: Pulling the YSAS circuit breaker removes power from the YSAS actuator and the
fin position indicator. Depending upon forward airspeed the right vertical stabilator may slowly move to the extreme trailing edge right position which will require approximately one inch of additional left pedal for trim flight.

CAUTION

DO NOT perform practice autorotations when the YSAS is inoperative or turned OFF.

NOTE: Flight operations with the YSAS inoperative is limited to no more that 10 hours
of operation.
F

Enter inoperative YSAS status in airframe Log Book. CAA Approved Original

PART IV NORMAL PROCEDURES

Operational check of YSAS Actuator:

NOTE: If the YSAS is found to be inoperative, flight operations is limited to no more that
10 hours. Low speed maneuvering: With helicopter longitudnal CG near the forward limit, (99.0 inches), hover flight in left sideward flight above 15 KIAS will result in reduced aft cyclic control margins.

CAUTION

Practice autorotations:

CAUTION

DO NOT perform practice autorotations with the YSAS inoperative. In autorotation, indicated airspeed accuracy is diminished when flying below 40 KIAS.

Landing approach:

NOTE: With YSAS off, it is recommended that poweron descent rates do not exceed
1,000 ft/min for all gross weight and altitude conditions.

PART V PERFORMANCE DATA

General: Performance graphs additional to those contained in the body of the Pilot Flight Manual (CSP520N1, Section V) are included in this supplement. Use of these graphs is only mandatory when required by Air Navigation legislation; otherwise its use, although most advisable for safety reasons, is at the discretion of the pilotincommand of the helicopter. The MD500N performance data presented herein for takeoff and landing distance to clear obstacles and maximum rates of climb are calculated based on the Allison model specification C948 for the 250C20R/2 engine. This in formation applies only under the following conditions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Standard atmosphere unless otherwise noted. 10 amps electrical load. Cabin heat and engine antiice OFF. 100% N2. Clean external flight configuration.

Enroute rate of climb performance: 200 ft/min rate of climb and 4% climb gradient cannot be attained using maximum continuous power (MCP) at any weight for temperatures in excess of 25 5C (775F).

CAUTION

Landing distance: Landing distance for 100 foot obstacle clearance, for a gross weight of 3350 pounds at sea level standard day conditions, is 800 feet. This value can be used for other ambient conditions.

VNE Chart: Description This chart (Ref. Figure 4) provides an alternate means for the pilot to determine VNE when density altitude, gross weight, or outside air tem perature are known.

NOTE: The VNE placards (Ref. Figure 2) are the preferred method for determining VNE.
Factored into these placards is the poweron 0.9 tip Mach limitation. Use of chart When using Figure 4, the operator is to use the slower of either: 1) The density altitude/weight combination VNE, OR 2) Tip Mach limit airspeed for the density altitude, not the weight. The tip Mach limit is the combination of density altitude vs. OAT.

NOTE: Before using this chart, the pilots must determine correct density altitude.
Example 1. WANTED: VNE KNOWN: Allup weight 2350 LB, HD 12000 FT., OAT 10C METHOD: Enter the chart at 12000 FT. and move right to the 2350 LB line. At this point, move directly down to the VNE indicated airspeed line and read approximately 116 KIAS.

NOTE: If the ambient temperature is 10C, then the VNE is density altitude limited at 116
KIAS (where the 2350 lb curve intersects the 12k line). Example 2. WANTED: VNE KNOWN: Allup weight 2350 LB, HD 12000 FT., OAT 30C METHOD: Enter the chart at 12000 FT. and move right to the 30C dashed line. At this point, move directly down to the VNE indicated airspeed line and read approximately 106 KIAS.

NOTE: In the above example, the VNE is determined by density altitude and tip Mach
limit (density altitude vs. OAT).
