Stage 3 Instruction
Unit Summary: Basic Technology Systems Lesson 1 of 3 Video
Lesson Essential Question (s): Lesson Knowledge: Lesson Skill(s):

What are the major parts in a computer system that make it operate? 1. Lesson Opener:

Computer, Mouse, Keyboard,

Knowledge of how the computers work.

Students will see the gallery of vocabulary in reference to computers and technology systems. It is hanging in a gallery walk style. We will talk for a few minutes about various known parts of the computer.

2. Transition:
Unit designed by Template adapted from the work of Grant Wiggins, Jay McTighe, and Carol Ann Tomlinson

I will direct the children to sit in a comfortable spot so that they can see the video

3. Activity: K-2 will watch the video Magic School Bus Gets Programmed 3-5 will watch the video Computer and Internet Basics Both are found on Discovery Streaming in my account Username: techteach Password: nerd1969 5th Grade is expected to take notes

4. Lesson Wrap-Up: K-2 students we will talk about the key words and vocabulary in the video 3-5 students will take a quiz at the end of the video. We will take the quiz as a group.

5. Additional Lesson Notes: Make sure 5th Graders bring pencil and paper Lesson 2 of 3
Lesson Essential Question(s): Lesson Knowledge: Major computer parts explained and explored Input and output devices Lesson Skill(s): Vocabulary, exploring the inside of a computer in groups

What does the inside of a computer look like? What are the parts

1. Lesson Opener: 15 min. Students will see the computers on the table, and will explore them as I introduce the major components. I will explain Input and Output devices, I will show the PowerPoint of Input and Output devices, and basic hardware.

Unit designed by Template adapted from the work of Grant Wiggins, Jay McTighe, and Carol Ann Tomlinson

2. Transition: 5min I will let the students explore each of the parts in the computer: talk about them and try to see where each goes.

3. Activity: 10 min Students will grab a partner, and pick up a part and explain it to the partner. They are required to say what it is, where it goes, what its function, and whether it is input or output (if applicable). They will then grab another partner and explain their part to that partner. After 30 seconds they will grab another partner. After 5 partners, they will be asked to stop, and will be called on to explain a partners part that has not already been said. They would say: I heard someone say that this is a__________ and it does________________.

4. Lesson Wrap-Up: Students will be asked to put all the parts back into the computer cases and line up

5. Additional Lesson Notes:

Lesson 3 of 3
Lesson Essential Question(s): Lesson Knowledge: Lesson Skill(s): Labeling the parts in a scavenger hunt game Where are all the parts of a computer located. The basic makeup of the computer and its various parts

Unit designed by Template adapted from the work of Grant Wiggins, Jay McTighe, and Carol Ann Tomlinson

1. Lesson Opener: 5 min. Review of the parts of a computer

2. Transition: 5 min. Students will be put into teams by drawing a card. The cards that go together will all be a group. 3. Activity: 20 min. Students will work as a team to find the various parts on the cards given. Teams with the most points on their cards will win. Cards that have either an input/output device with them are required to put them in the correct stack (Input Stack or Output Stack)

4. Lesson Wrap-Up: Students will be instructed to put all cards away Put all parts of the computer back into the computer shells, and line up.

5. Additional Lesson Notes: Students are given cards that I have created that have the vocabulary of the various concepts we have been studying (most with
