2011 - 2012 Annual Report

Board Greetings
With gratitude, we began the 2012-13 school year at Mother Seton Academy. Sister Barbara Bowers, SSND has completed over six years of service on the Member Board. We wish her blessings and welcome Sister Susan Czaplicki, SSND to continue her communitys presence on the Member Board. The six sponsoring communities continue their strong support of their founding vision of this tuitionfree Catholic school for children in underserved neighborhoods of Baltimore. Sisters Josephann Wagoner, SSND and our former President, Sister Charmaine Krohe, SSND have been called to leadership roles in their congregation. We are grateful for the ways they have each furthered the vision of Mother Seton Academy and wish them success as they continue to respond to Gods call to service in their new undertaking. We welcome two new board members, Brother Matthew Burke, CFX and Sister John Vianney Zullo, SSND . These seasoned educators bring a wealth of experience and insight to our board. After an extensive search, Sister Peggy Juskelis, SSND has been selected as President of Mother Seton Academy. Sr. Peggy has served as a teacher and administrator in three local high schools: Institute of Notre Dame, SetonKeough High School and Cardinal Gibbons School. She has just completed over six years of service as a Provincial Councilor. We are grateful for the leadership experience and for the commitment to the mission that she brings to Mother Seton Academy. We thank you for your generous partnership in making available the quality, transformative education we offer to our students. Because of your help, we are able to make a difference in the lives of these young people. Sincerely,

Bro. Frank ODonnell, SM, JD Board Chair

Presidents Message
When I was young, I learned a song, Count your blessings. Name them one by one. Count your blessings. See what God has done. In this, my first letter to you as President of Mother Seton Academy, I would like to share with you some of the blessings that I have seen and experienced here. To list them all would be beyond my limits, but let me share with you a few of the highlights. The school year had already begun when I joined the Mother Seton Academy Family. Because of the dedication and hard work of the faculty, staff, board and other friends of Mother Seton Academy, the school started smoothly with an excited and eager student body. My welcome was both warm and humbling. I am eager to join this community dedicated to providing an education for these young men and women that will help them to realize their Godgiven talents and to become leaders. In addition to strengthening our core curriculum, other new instructional opportunities will include collaboration with the Space Telescope Science Institute and Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). We will also continue our partnership with The Peabody Institute in providing opportunities for music instruction for our students. Our basketball program is expanding this year to include a team for girls. We would not be able to provide opportunities such as these without the support of the many volunteers and benefactors who share our vision of providing a holistic, transformative education experience for our students. I am grateful for the support and encouragement that I have received from so many members of the Mother Seton Academy Family. Thank you for being a partner as we continue this effort to prepare our students to become leaders in serving their families, communities and society. You are a blessing indeed. Sincerely,

Sister Peggy Juskelis, SSND President

MSA Becomes an AIMS School

In May 2012, after a lengthy review process involving interviews with staff, faculty, students and parents, Mother Seton Academy was informed that we were approved as provisional members of the Association of Independent Maryland & DC Schools (AIMS). Ron Goldblatt, Director of AIMS, said that the Board Members of AIMS were very deeply impressed with Mother Seton Academy and strongly believe that we measure up to the standards of AIMS. Founded in 1967, AIMS is a voluntary association of approximately 120 schools in Maryland and the District of Columbia. The Association serves nearly 45,000 students and 6,000 professional educators. One of AIMS central purposes is to support efforts by member schools to improve the pedagogy, curriculum and other areas of school operation. Accreditation is critical to this process. Every member school is required to be accredited in order to demonstrate its commitment to high standards and ongoing self-improvement. We will embark upon a vigorous 18-month self-study of our school, and prepare a written self-study report, undergo an intensive three-day visit by a team of outside educators, and develop a written Action Plan for our schools improvement before we will be accepted as fullfledged members of the AIMS community of schools. The accreditation process will challenge us to account for the day-to-day quality with which we serve our students. It also challenges us to engage in a continuous process of analysis and self-reflection and to set a high bar of excellence. The AIMS evaluation process is designed to provide a framework for continuous analysis, reflection and learning by our faculty and staff so that we can serve our students with excellence. We are honored to be part of the AIMS community.

The ball hovered in the air for

From where I was, it looked like it was going in, remembers James Rossi, head coach of the Mother Seton Academy basketball team. On that afternoon in late February, Mother Seton Academys basketball team traveled to the School of the Cathedral of Mary our Queen (Cathedral) to play their last game of the year. Cathedral, who is known for having one of the strongest CYO teams in the area, warmly welcomed us to their gymnasium for an afternoon of basketball. The teams battled all game as the score went back and forth. As the minutes turned to seconds on the game clock, Mother Seton Academy held onto a one point lead. I kept reminding them to stick to the fundamentals. To stick to what we worked on all year, said Rossi. Good fundamentals are the foundation of a good team Starting in November, Mother Seton Academys basketball team practiced twice a week in our multi-purpose room. Coach Rossi, along with assistant coaches TJ Dygert and Drew Havens, spent those early practices shaping not only the offense and defense, but the fundamentals. We wanted the team to play together, to play hard, and to play the game the right way, recalled Coach Rossi. After four weeks of practicing, the team was ready to start playing games. Their first test came against St. Ursulas in the Paul Kinney Classic. In the season opener, Mother Seton Academy played well, but couldnt match the height of St. Ursulas. I thought we learned a great deal from that first game. We were outrebounded, but our team played well. We played hard. We played together. The coaches told the team afterwards that we were proud

r what seemed like an eternity.

of how they played and that our mission was to keep getting better, said Rossi. The first game set the tone for the team, and with each passing game and scrimmage the team played better. More importantly, the fourteen boys continued to grow together as a team. A great example of this occurred the night that the team travelled to Loyola University to watch a mens basketball game. Coach Rossi remembers, I thought our team really came together after that trip. We drove as a team to Loyola. We ate as a team in the student dining hall where I have never seen 6 pizzas disappear so quickly! We all sat together and watched the game in the stands. These team-centered activities build good teamwork on the court and in the classroom. Mother Seton Academys last game of the year was against Cathedral. Ahead by one point with only a few seconds remaining, our coaching staff called its final timeout and reminded their players to not foul the shooter. Coach Rossi recalls, I remember telling the team that if the opposing player can make a buzzer beater from half court, they deserve to win the game. Cathedral inbounded the ball to one of their best players. As the buzzer sounded, Cathedral tossed a last second shot into the air. The ball went off the backboard, hit the rim, and fell harmlessly to the floor. We had won! After the game, both teams gathered at center court to shake hands, talk about the game, and pose for pictures. Mother Seton Academys first season had ended with a win. As Coach Rossi reflected on the final game, he couldnt help but think about the year as a whole. We are so grateful for the sponsors and donors that support our school, especially Tom and Pam ONeil. We are also blessed with an administration that supported everything the team did. Our families did a tremendous job helping our players balance school work and basketball. We also want to thank Cathedral, St. Ignatius, and St. Ursula for hosting our program in our inaugural season. They were essential to helping us build our program. With the 2012-2013 season on the horizon, there is a buzz reverberating through the halls of Mother Seton Academy. This season, Mother Seton Academy will add a girls basketball team to their athletic program. In addition, both the boys and girls teams will participate in a league. Stay tuned for more news out of the athletic department at Mother Seton Academy as the basketball program takes it to the next level this year.

Thank you to all the donors and volunteers who make our school a success.
