Explicit Instruction Implementation Log
Time Frame of Implementation Study Name: Emma Wetzel Text: What Do Illustrators Do ? Lesson Focus/Goal: Visualizing Grade Level/Role: 6th Grade
Briefly describe the instructional technique, strategy, or activity you will be using. As a class we will read the story, Come Look With Me. I will set you up for success by telling you what you need to know by the end of the reading. By the end of the lesson, you will know all about illustrators.
Include an introductory statement about what students will be learning to do and a brief explanation of how this strategy will be useful to them as readers.
Instructor Models and Demonstrates: (I do)
Include key statements you will use to model comprehension thinking. Wave at me if you like picture books. Today I will be reading a story that tells us what illustrators do. An illustrator is an artist who makes pictures for books. They help make the story come to life and they can make reading more fun. When we get to the end of the book, you will know the process an illustrator has to go through. As I read, I want you to listen to keywords that you think are important to know and write them down. The book tells us four vocabulary words along with their definitions. I will ask you what those four words are when we are done. Let’s see how well you can listen!
Guided Practice: (We do)
Include opportunities for students to engage in guided practice with the comprehension strategy. Let’s turn to page 35. What if illustrators did not use colors? How would this affect books? I now want everyone to close your eyes. Now, imagine there is no color in the world. What is it like? Does it change the way you feel? What are you seeing?
Collaborative Learning: (You do it together)
Include opportunities for students to engage with a partner or triad while teacher observes small group interaction and understanding of lesson focus. I want you to share your four words with your partner and compare if they match up. We will not all have the same words written down, as a team I want you to choose the four you and your partner think fit best.
Independent Practice: (You do)
Include opportunities for students to engage in independent practice with the fluency instructional tasks. I want each of you to quick write and come up with your own reason of why illustrators are important. Please include the four key words that you learned from the lesson.
