Kanter – Comm 1016 Narrative Assignment #2 1. Go to Blackboard and print off a copy of each of the 3 short narrative essays I have provided. 2. Read the essays keeping what we talked about in class as being “characteristics of effective narratives” in mind. 3. Type out a short response paper that addresses the following questions:  Which of the 3 essays did you feel had the best story/storyline? Why?
I believe that “My Turn: Still Haunted by What Could Have Happened” had the best storyline because of the suspense that was built up by the speaker being solicited by the child porn photographer.

 Which of the 3 essays had the strongest overall theme/purpose?
I believe that “My Turn: I Was Out of a Job—And an Identity” had the strongest theme. This essay encourages us to embrace shamelessly helping others through education.  Which of the 3 essays did you feel was the best written? I believe that “'My Boy' Had Become a Threat to Our Safety” was the best written because even thought the story was about a dog, the author helps you feel a level of attachment to the dog as an actual friend of the owner.

 Which of the 3 essays did you connect with (personally) the most? Why?
I can connect with “'My Boy' Had Become a Threat to Our Safety” the most because I can remember the day we had to put our first dog down. The dog was not a threat to anybody, he was just so geriatric that it would be inhumane to keep him alive. This was very difficult for me because we had had the dog for seven years and he was a fixture in my house as well as in my life.

4. Bring both your typed response paper and a hard copy of the articles to class with you (your next scheduled class session). The response paper will be collected for participation points. The articles will be briefly discussed in class – and then should be saved for later inclusion in your final portfolio.
