Progressive Era Class Notes  1890-1920: The Progressive Era. o  Reformers address the problems created by, or exacerbated by industrialism and big business. Problem for consumers? o o   Upton Sinclair: The Jungle.  Targeted meat-packing industry. Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

Media: 4th “branch” of the government. 1911: Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. o “Sweating the Workers.”   o Deductions from paychecks for ridiculous reasons (i.e. needles & thread, stools, etc.). Fines for being 5 minutes late, complaining, & using restroom. Lack of safety features in New York, despite it being available.

 

The fight for better treatment of women was furthered fueled by tragedy. 1920: 19th Amendment passed: Women’s suffrage. o Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Lucretia Mott.  July 19-20, 1848: Seneca Falls Convention.

   

Pittsburg, Pennsylvania: “Prosperity determined by soot in the air.” Coal and Iron Police, an attempted union. Female teachers not allowed to marry. Booker T. Washington: Wrote “Up From Slavery.” o o Work hard and get help. Familiarity  integration. Ida B. Wells: Against lynching and “Southern justice.”

   

Progressives & African-American Rights. o 1896: Plessy vs. Ferguson: Separate but equal is constitutional. Marcus Garvey: LET’S GO BACK TO AFRICA! Booker T. Washington: Familiarity breeds tolerance. o o Learn a trade/vocation, leave a good impression. Will take a while, so accept the racism in the meantime. 1|Page

W.E.B. DuBois: Understood Garvey’s passion.

1901-1909: Theodore Roosevelt (Republican). o o o Did further investigation after reading The Jungle. Born into wealthy family. Square deal: Fair trade or treatment.

 

1906: Pure Food and Drug Act. 1909-1913: William Howard Taft (Republican). o Children’s Bureau.   o  Set minimum working age. Public education for children. Twice as many trusts busted than Roosevelt.

Conservative approach to reforms.

 

Theodore Roosevelt: Progressive Party  Bull Moose Party. 1913-1921: Woodrow Wilson. o o Set up federal reserve. Remembered for leading America into WWI.
