Harwood - Winner And Still Champion!
Highlanders Edge Raiders U-32 1-0
DAVID HEATH PHOTO
BURLINGTON In a well-played, evenly matched Division II
field hockey championship match on the turf at UVMs Moulton
Field, Harwood prevailed over U-32, 1-0, to claim its third straight
state championship.
Gusse Damsteeg, an exchange student from Holland, who grew
up playing the game on turf, scored on a penalty corner play with
11:03 remaining in the game. Katlyn Martin served the ball out to
senior Emily Reagan, who nudged the ball over to Damsteeg.
For me, it was lucky, Damsteeg said. Emily stopped the ball
and got it to me. When I came to Harwood, they told me they had
won two championships and could win a third. I wasnt sure what
to think, but now weve done it.
When the season started, Damsteeg was asking coach Heidi Hill
where the turf was. I told her we have to earn the chance to play
on that at the end of the year, Hill said.
The Raiders had their chances right down to Emily Graves shot
that rattled off the post as the clock wound down. A minute earlier,
U-32 standout Kristen Keene blasted a ball off Highlander goalie
Megan Meanys pads that nearly found its way into the cage.
Meg has been our goalie for all three championships, coach
Hill said. She has a lot of experience and she will dive for every
ball.
Were a passing team, Hill noted. For a while, we were try-
ing to do too much. We were handling the ball a lot. You have to
make the ball do the running for you. U-32 played awesome. It
could have gone either way. We were lucky enough to hold them
off towards the end.
The first half was played up and down the middle of the field
with only one save (Meany) and no penalty corners. Highlander
Haley Spittle had a shot go just wide in the 34th minute. Raider
Abby Daniels sent two shots narrowly wide of the post halfway
through the second half.
Meany totaled four saves. Sophomore goalie Bailee Hudson had
two saves.
U-32 had shut out Harwood twice during the regular season.
I thought we had some excellent opportunities, U-32 coach
Melissa Muller-Moore said. We played a great game. Theres no
reason for us to hang our heads. We really poured it on at the end.
We tried to get that goal back.
Seniors Austen Gillen-Keeney, Stacy Woolaver, Greer Gillespie,
Metta Sairs and Alexis Powell, also excelled for U-32.

Tough Loss For Solons
RANDOLPH In a battle of unbeat-
ens, Burr and Burton defeated
Montpelier 2-1 in the Division II
boys soccer championship match
Saturday at Randolph High School.
It was a successful title defense
for the Bulldogs. Montpelier was
making its first appearance in the
finals since a triple overtime loss to
Mount Abraham in 2004.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime,
Montpelier drew even with Jackson
Watsons goal in the 43rd minute.
Watson beat two defenders and sent
a shot across the width of the goal
and off the far post into the net.
Several promising attacks that led to
shots by John Basa and TJ
Dellipriscoli followed in the next
ten minutes, but the score remained
deadlocked.
Watson and Solon midfielder
Reed Bingham had to leave the
game with injuries as the half wore
on. Burr and Burtons possessions in Montpeliers end began to increase.
With 10:04 remaining, the Bulldogs put together a pretty combination
scoring play that landed them the title.
Montpelier had an outstanding season while compiling a 16-1 record.
Many key players on the roster will
be returning next season.
Montpeliers seniors included, goal-
ie Ben Estes, David Blythe, Nat
Crane, George Blair, Matt Murray,
Zach Konfor, Steve Koenemann and
Cullen Rose.

Springfield Held Scoreless By Montpelier In
Division II Girls Soccer State Championship
No. 2 seeded Montpelier Solons girls division
II soccer team played No. 3 seeded Springfield
Cosmos last Saturday morning under partly
cloudy skies and 40 degree temperature at
Randolph High School. First to score was
Caroline Kessler assisted by Annie Jones at the
37:14 minute mark. Then Jones turned around
scoring at the 24:17 minute mark off an assist by
Lilly Schwarz. The Solons will score twice again
in the first half by Lilly Schwarz and Kate Jones
ending the half with the Solons leading 4-0. The
second half is similar to the first as Kate Drew
scores off an assist by Annie Jones, Rachel
Ebersole scores goal assisted by Kate Drew,
Annie Jones gets her second goal off assist from
Hartley Bingham and Kate Drew gets her hat
trick third goal assisted by Lilly Schwarz. Final
score 8-0 is not what a sports fan would expect
from two teams seeded so close. Springfield did
not hand Montpelier this game it was hard fought
both sides. Solons goalkeeper had 9 saves
Cosmos goalkeeper had 7 saves.

Pulling away from Brad Keselowski in a green-white-checkered-flag
finish at Texas Motor Speedway, Jimmie Johnson won Sunday nights
AAA Texas 500 and tightened his grip on a possible sixth NASCAR Sprint
Cup Series championship. Johnson finished .808 seconds ahead of
Keselowski and increased his lead in the standings to from two points to
seven. The victory was Johnsons fifth of the season, his second at Texas
and the 60th of his career. For the second straight week, Johnson won a
Chase race from the pole. Kyle Busch ran third, followed by Matt Kenseth,
Tony Stewart and Clint Bowyer. Keselowski and Johnson raced side-by-
side and a hairbreadth from losing control after the restart on lap 327, with
Keselowski pulling out to an eight-car-length lead, but a wreck on the
frontstretch two laps later set up the two-lap dash to the finish. It was an
awesome race. Its a great way to do it when the gloves are off and its
bare-knuckle fighting, Johnson said. I got a great restart and got by him.
I knew we had the speed if I could just get by him. Keselowski posted
his best career finish in the No. 2 Dodge at Texas by leading 75 laps after
never before finishing better than 14th. After the April race at Texas ended
with a track-record 234 consecutive green-flag laps, the first 100 laps
Sunday were without a caution. Thats 334green flag laps or the equivalent
of 501 miles, or a full Sprint Cup race at Texas. The Johnson- Keselowski
dual heads to Phoenix this weekend, where Johnson was fourth and
Keselowski fifth in the second race of the season eight months ago. The
season finale is at Homestead. The win was also the 700th NASCAR
Sprint Cup victory for Chevy.
Kevin Harvick had a lock on the front of the field in Saturday nights
OReilly Auto Parts Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway, but there was
plenty of action behind him. The class of the field in the 200-lap, 300-mile
Nationwide Series race, Harvick won handily, crossing the finish line
1.628 seconds ahead of 18-year-old Ryan Blaney, who made the most of a
pit stop for tires on Lap 178. Polesitter Kyle Busch ran third, followed by
Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who erased the six-point series lead Elliott Sadler
held when the race began. Stenhouse, the defending Nationwide champi-
on, is tied with Sadler with two races left in the season. The victory was
Harvicks second of the season and the 39th of his career, third most all-
time. Harvick, who led 127 laps, notched his fifth Nationwide victory at
Texas, tied with Busch for the track record. Stenhouse, fighting a loose
handling condition, trailed Sadler for the majority of the race, but a restart
on Lap 160 began a dramatic reversal of fortune for the two drivers fight-
ing for the title. Stenhouse took the green flag in the 14th position and
began a charge to the front. On Lap 175, he passed Logano for the fourth
spot. The real turnaround occurred, however, after Joe Nemechek brushed
the Turn 4 wall on Lap 177 to cause the fifth and final caution of the race.
Both Stenhouse and Sadler remained on track, while many in the field
behind them, including Blaney, came to pit road for tires. Stenhouse was
able to hold the fourth position after the Lap 182 restart, but Sadler, who
restarted sixth, lost ground to the drivers with fresh rubber and faded to
11th. When the cautions came out, we were able to make some adjust-
ments to it, said Stenhouse, whose crew used liberal changes to the track
bar, air pressure and wedge (weight distribution) to try to tighten up the
No. 6 Ford. We just took advantage of that second-to-last restart there
with 40 (laps) to go and got our
track position.
Passing Parker Kligerman with
10 laps left, Johnny Sauter won
Friday nights WinStar World Casino
350 NASCAR Camping World
Truck Series race to claim his sec-
ond victory of the season. Both of
Sauters wins have come at the 1.5-
mile Texas Motor Speedway. Sauter
finished 2.199 seconds ahead of
Kligerman, who came home second.
Nelson Piquet Jr. ran third, followed
by Kyle Busch and Ty Dillon, who
trimmed six points off series leader
James Bueschers advantage with
two races left in the season. Sauter
is the third driver to sweep both
races at Texas in the same year.
Brendan Gaughan and Ron
Hornaday Jr. also accomplished the
feat, with Gaughan doing it twice. Sauters winning average speed of
154.737 mph was a series record for the track. Quick pit work on a two-tire
stop late race put Kligerman in the lead by more than three seconds over
Sauter by the time the pits stops cycled through. Sauter, on four new tires,
caught and passed the No. 7 truck on lap 137 of 147. I looked up (after
the pits stops), and he was pretty far out there, and I was like, Oh, boy,
Sauter said. At that point they kept telling me my laps times, telling me I
was two, three, four tenths faster than him per lap, and I knew that, with as
much time as there was left in the race -- 20 or 25 laps -- I didnt think (two
tires would) prevail. I just knew it was a matter of time. As fast as we
reeled him in, I just figured there was plenty of time. After a restart from
the second spot on Lap 70 Point leader James Buescher reported a vibra-
tion in his No. 30 Chevrolet and began to fall back through the field. On
Lap 95, Buescher lost the ninth position to Justin Lofton, and with Ty
Dillon running fifth at the time, faced the prospect of losing a significant
portion of the 21-point series lead he held entering the race. Buescher held
on to finish 11th and leaves Texas with a 15-point advantage. The race tied
an NCWTS track record for fewest cautions (two) and set a new mark for
fewest caution laps (eighth). The last 78 laps were run under the green
flag.
Victory Lane
Saturdays Berlin City Frostbite Enduro 150 grew an extra 50 laps to a
200 lapper at the drivers meeting, but that didnt stop Floyd Bennett JR.
from grabbing the $2000 payday at the All-New Riverside Speedway.
Garage Garble
Two-time Thunder Road King of the Road Champion Dave Pembroke
earned his second Milk Bowl victory this past weekend in the 50th Annual
Peoples United Bank Milk Bowl, picking up a check worth over $14,000.
The victory was well worth the wait for the family-run team. A week ago
last Sunday; Pembrokes name was etched into the final slot on the face of
the granite stone that marks 50 years of Milk Bowl Champions. It is his
second appearance on the stone, but the last slot is particularly special.
Im psyched, Pembroke gushed to the media after the race. No one else
can win it. It will be 50 years before they have another anniversary one.
Its pretty cool to me. If you can put your name on this one, its huge.
Pembrokes 50th Anniversary Milk Bowl win should come as no surprise
to even the casual race fan, his name on Quarry Hill becoming synony-
mous with the Petty designation in NASCAR, He is one of only a handful
of drivers who have their name on every granite stone at Thunder Road for
his two track titles, his two Milk Bowl wins, his Labor Day Classic vic-
tory in 2009, and his three Memorial Day Classic victories. He has
amassed 19 feature victories at Thunder Road, putting him third on the
all-time win list. To add to his storied career, Pembroke quietly picked up
the Vermont State Late Model Championship this summer, becoming the
first Vermont State Champion in
over two decades. Pembrokes
career continues to upsurge at the
Nations Site of Excitement and
his 50th Anniversary Milk Bowl
victory may have been his most
prevalent statement yet. Any time
you can win something like that,
your name is in the granite again.
They cant take it away from you.
You build your history. Youre not
here for a long time, so you do
what you can while youre here.
Kyle Busch is looking to ink a
deal with Ross Kenseth, son of
2003 Sprint Cup champion Matt
Kenseth for a full time ride with
Buschs Camping World Truck
Series organization in 2013. Busch
has become quite impressed with
the Clemson University Engineering
student who has made quite a name
for himself on the short tracks.
Busch feels the only thing standing
in the way of an agreement is spon-
sorship. Id like to do something
with Ross, Busch said. Its just a
problem trying to get funding.
Theres no backing for some of the
drivers that are here right now. The
price is obviously cheaper in the
truck series. You can start small
and grow big. But its hard to get
interest there. Kenseth won the
Rosebud 300 at Anderson (Indiana)
Speedway in July which initiated
Buschs interest but piqued the
Cups stars attention with wins last
month in the All American 400
(Fairgrounds Speedway, Nashville)
and in the Winchester (Ind.) 400,
besting Busch in both events
Next Lap
Just two races left and the world
will know who the next Sprint cup
champion will be. This weekend
its go West young men.go
west to Phoenix International
Racing and the 25th annual
Advocare 500 on Sunday (ESPN,
2:00 p.m.). Defending race cham-
pion Kasey Kahne emerged at the
front of the field at Phoenix after a
late round of pit stops, and led for
just 14 of the 312 laps of the race to
win last year. But since they were
the final 14 laps, they were exactly
what he needed to break out of a
long dry streak and claim his first
Sprint Cup win in 81 races, the lat-
ter half of them for Red Bull
Racing. He finished right in front
of Chase cup contenders Carl
Edwards and Tony Stewart who
finished second and third.
The Riverside Speedway Annual
Banquet of Champions will take
place at the beautiful Town and
Country Motor Inn in Gorham NH
on Saturday night. The 2012
Grovetona track champions for
all divisions will be honored along
with an array of special awards.

SURVEY REVEALS WILDLIFE HAVE
HIGH RECREATIONAL AND ECONOMIC VALUE
By John Hall
The MISSION of the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department
is the conservation of all fish, wildlife and plants and
their habitats for the people of Vermont.
WHERE THE MONEY COMES FROM
FEDERAL EXCISE TAX
ON HUNTING &
FISHING EQUIPMENT 42%
VERMONT HUNTING,
FISHING LICENSES FEES 33%
OTHER SOURCES 25%
Vermonts hunters have helped restore many species of wildlife since 1900s through their purchase of hunting
licenses, and then, beginning in the 1930s, through taxes on hunting equipment.
The most notable species to benefit: peregrine falcon, common loon, osprey, Canadian geese, wild turkeys,
fishers, wood ducks
Through careful management and protection , white tailed deer, black bears, moose, bobcats and beaver were
brought back from extremely low numbers in the 1800s to the healthy populations we have today.
How much are Vermonts wildlife resources worth? Most of
us would agree you cant put a dollar value on them. Many of
the memories we have of wildlife experiences are priceless - that
monster buck fading into early morning fog, a Canada jay shar-
ing sandwich crumbs in the Northeast
Kingdom, or the baleful eye of a big northern pike as it chases
our lure, looks up and turns, boiling the water next to the boat.
But, our fish and wildlife are important to those of us who live
in Vermont, and they actually contribute greatly to our economy
as was revealed in the most recent National Survey of Fishing,
Hunting and Wildlife Associated Recreation, conducted by the
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
The National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-
Associated Recreation has become one of the most important
sources of information on fish and wildlife recreation in the
United States. Conducted at five-year intervals since 1955, the
survey quantifies the amount of recreation and expenditures that
can be attributed to these resources. Federal, state and private
organizations use the information found in the survey results to
manage wildlife, market products and look for trends.
Benefits Involve More Than the Money All told, the federal
survey shows those of us who fish, hunt, watch, feed and pho-
tograph wildlife spent more than $704 million on these activi-
ties in Vermont. Thats significant no matter how you look at
it, and it is sure to make Vermont business owners take notice
and think about the opportunities associated with these pur-
suits.
