Summer of a Lifetime gets the thumbs up

Forty young people from Years 11 and 12 , aged 16 and 17 from schools across the Borough of South Tyneside gave the thumbs up to the Summer of a Lifetime Project. The National Citizenship Service Programme in association with V, The National Young Volunteers Service and in partnership with The Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust was a huge success as young people embarked on a fantastic summer adventure. The NCS project is intended to develop important lifeskills and qualities valued by educational institutions and employers, raise young peoples aspirations and develop vital skills such as team-working, leadership, project managements, communication and decisionmaking.

The away residential was followed by a home residential based at South Tyneside College where they engaged in further challenging activities and where they also did first aid. Facilitating and dipping in and out of the projects were ex Olympic Athletes, Chris Cook, Katy Storie and Chloe Cowen who gave motivational talks and worked with the young people on their projects. The young people completed their Summer of a Lifetime by celebrating at a graduation event held at the Hilton Hotel, Gateshead on 23rd September. There they were given signed certificates from David Cameron. Shelagh Lamb, Springboards South Tyneside Manager said:

We spoke to over 1500 young people in schools in South Tyneside We received over 141 expressions of interest

This project has been amazing for the young people of this borough. They showed true determination and stamina in everything they did. It identified, where volunteering is concerned, young people are not afraid to get stuck in and help their communities yet at the same time enjoy themselves. It was a fantastic time for all involved
