CHAPTER 6 Alone In Space by Edgar Bajaña
Zebulon stared outside the space shuttle's window as it approached the moon. It seemed as if the ship were moving so slowly through space. But, the shuttle was going quicker than he had ever gone before. He saw nothing but darkness out there and an emptiness filled his stomach. He thought of Irene and the emptiness turned to pain. He contined to stare at the moon and it looked grey and changeless. It had been such a long time since he had seen the moon with his own eyes. The storm had blocked it out of the sky when he was very young. He was about six years old when and standing hand and hand with his father when it happened. They were standing on Montrose Hill, a man made hill about four stories high, that was used by kids to play on. He and his father were standing on top of the hill when they heard a loud boom in the sky. For. They both quickly looked up in the direction of the sound and saw the sun disappear as if it just vanished from the sky. At the time it didn't make sense to him what had happened and his father never mentioned anything. Zebulon's eyes turned back upon the moon. His eyes widened the closer he got to the moon. It looked lifeless. But deep down, there was molten lava swirling around it's dense iron core. For a moment, it looked like the moon was the opening to cave and it soon became the one way to leave his past behind. There was a New World on the other side of the moon and Zebulon and the hundred throusand spacewalkers would pass through it. The thought of Irene became less painful. He imagined that she would be happy for him to get on with his life. He stared at the twenty or so shuttle that flew through space and he did not feel lonely. He was quitely listening to the deep hum of deep space and the static coming from the radio receiver, when he saw a flash of light outside his window. It quickly dissappeared. Everyone who travelled with him noticed it. He and a few got to look out a look out a window. However, they saw nothing. Zebulon would not learn about the diaster coming his way until he was inside the spaceport of the moon. The flash of light that he just caught a glimpse of was the
beginning of the inevitable disaster. The Captain knew about it, but needed to get as many people as he could on the ships. The flash of light occurred when a pair of meteors crashed into the passenger cell of one of the shuttles. The meteors passed through the shuttle like hot coal through a foot of iron. The hole was wide enough that all the passengers were instantly sucked out to space, like a chain of puppets. Into the darkness they went. "The exposed human body has about thirty seconds, before permanent damage begans. One of the first things I learned was to empty out the lungs or the gas will expand and puncture the lung and intestines, causing internal bleeding. Exhale. It's not, like the movies, where the person's blood boils or the body instantly freezes or explodes. It's not like that at all." Zebulon explained it to his father once. "It is more like drowning in a deep sea. You lose oxygen and you go unconscious. The sunburn begins. This happens from exposure to ultra-violet radiation and the skin and the underlying tissue begin to swell. It's like a bunch of minor injuries, piling on top of one another. The body turns blue. After one or two minutes the body itself begins to die. And that is all. It's like drowning at the bottom of a deep ocean..." His father interjected, "...It's like drowning alone With no one love to you in those last moment." added his father. "A sad thing." "Dying alone is a sad thing." Zebulon agreed. The thought made Zebulon think about Irene. He was so mad at her that one day he finally yelled at her. He really didn't reflect on what he said until now. He looked in her green eyes and said, "Fuck you Irene, you're going to die alone, like miserable old bitch." Zebulon stared out the window of the shuttle and looked back upon the moon. It was larger than before. The shuttle swung around the circumference of the moon and Zebulon got a clear view of what was on the other side. Docked to the lunar space port, were the the three gigantic space ships. They were three generational ships, each built with a self sustainable ecological system. The ship were meant only for one way travel. Together, they would transport about a hundred thousand space walkers. As Zebulon looked at each of the ships, he noticed there names. Their names were branded on the side of the ship. The largest ship was the flag ship and named the SS Christopher Columbus. That was the ship that Zebulon was assigned to. The other two ships were darker in colorant had no identifying marks. Zebulon the red glow of the lunar control tower. The lunar control room was bathed in red light. The flash of light of the exploding ship reflected in the captains visor. The video replayed again. He stared at the dead bodies floating in space. All he could gather from the sight was that he lost the first members of
his crew. They were 250 space walkers. In that moment he felt the same kind of loneliness that Zebulon had just felt. It was the cold hand of death that space takes without mercy.
