GRANT PROPOSAL

April 30, 2012

OBJECTIVE: To increase the number of students who have 21st Century Skills in Floral Industry and the Arts by 45% by the end of the 2012-2013 school year. GOALS: The purpose of this grant proposal is to implement a project in the advanced floriculture course at Everett High School, Everett, WA. Grant funds are to be used to assist the floriculture instructor in providing 21st Century Skills in this Career and Technical Education classroom. Needs Statement The ultimate goal of this grant is to implement a semester long project for high school Floriculture students to learn and showcase 21st century skills as related to the Floral Industry and the Arts. Providing students with the necessary photography equipment, reflective interaction and awareness of how their experience can affect the community will promote critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity in addition to college and career readiness. Campus Grade Levels Everett High School is one of four 9th-12th grade high schools in the Everett School District located in Everett, Washington. The school serves approximately 1500 students on the north end of district. The Everett High Floriculture course serves 125 students each semester for a total of 250 students per school year. These students are in all four grade levels and includes general education, English Language Learner, Special Education and Life Skills students. Process Washington State Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses will be incorporating 21st century skills over the next couple of years. In creating this project I will be looking at creativity/innovation, critical thinking/problem solving, communication/collaboration, information literacy, media literacy, information/communications/technology literacy. These are all areas of emphasis that will be required of CTE courses in the state of Washington. Groups of Participants Contributing to Needs Assessment Process Present Floriculture 1, 2, 3, 4 students Previous Floriculture students still in high school Previous graduated Floriculture students living in the community Everett High School Administrators Parents of Floriculture students Community members from the Floriculture Advisory Committee

Major Needs Need #1: Students lack access to technologies that display their interests. Need #2: Students lack a connection to their community. There are few opportunities for students at Everett High School to display their best work to the community. One district building provides foyer space for art projects to be on display for

those that come into the building. Providing a space for students best work to be shown in the community could be a huge boost to their feelings of support. This project provides a chance for students that might normally be unheard of in the community to create something they can be proud of and share at a final community gallery show. Their confidence is built throughout the project in small steps until they accomplish the original project goal in the end. This is unlike other projects they are required to complete in high school except for their Senior Culminating Exhibition. Many students dread that final senior project because they have nothing to compare it to. They have written many papers and taken numerous tests, but nothing else has a research and project component like the Senior Culminating Exhibition. My hope is to create this project to provide that experience in setting goals then

accomplishing several steps along the way. Students will also reflect on each of those steps and enhance the project as they go. They will also comment on other students projects so everyone is helping everyone else.

The first purchase will be at least one digital camera that has interchangeable lens. These cameras include a rechargeable battery with charging station. We would supply one 8GB memory card per camera. A macro lens will also be purchased to use with the camera in order for more artistic photographs to be taken from an ultra up close perspective. This is important so students will have the option to take traditional photographs of their arrangements throughout the semester as well as the chance to use professional photographic skills in a more artistic manner. These photographs will need a better environment to create the best quality photo possible. Presently our classroom is lighted with mainly fluorescent tube lighting. A good quality photo booth with interchangeable backgrounds and studio lights is necessary for the professional quality desired. These backgrounds will be hung from a retractable screen mounted on the ceiling or wall. Various colors of backgrounds are necessary depending on the colors used in the flower arrangements that are to be photographed. Studio lights mounted on individual stands will provide some mobility and lighting choices for students to be creative. We will purchase a high quality color printer that is capable of printing beautiful colored photographs. This will also require premium ink with plenty of replacement cartridges. A supply of photographic paper is necessary. Students will be printing one photo of their choice to present at the community gallery show at the end of the semester. A part of this process will include students learning to cut mats to frame their chosen photograph. So a good quality mat cutter, self-sealing cutting mat and the mat boards will need to be provided, preferably in black and white only. Various picture hanging supplies will include hooks, clips and wires.

Students will take two field trips to local art galleries to gain some experience in what is

April 30, 2012

expected from an artist when he shows his work. We have several galleries within walking distance of the school that would be great options. Another possibility is a field trip to the Seattle Art Museum in downtown Seattle for the ultimate gallery show experience. Professional Development will be required for further instructor training in the areas of Studio Floral Designing, Studio Photography, Website/Blogging with Art, Mat Cutting and Creating a Gallery Show. Some resources I located that provide this type of training are Floral Design Institute in Portland, OR, Everett Community College-Continuing Education Department and our local Everett Schack Art Center. The Schack Art Center is also a great facility for our Community Gallery Show. They have a Main Gallery available to rent as well as two Studio Rooms and a Kitchen. So it looks like the budget of $800 will work out excellent with their published rental costs. I will contact our local newspaper to see if they would write an article about our project and the community gallery show. We will publicize the gallery show through the school district email, flyers at school and local businesses, and social media. Approximately $200 is allotted for miscellaneous items. This might include shipping and tax on any purchases.

EVALUATION Objective: To increase the number of students who have 21st Century Skills in Floral Industry and the Arts by 45% by the end of the 2012-2013 school year. If the 45% occurs, student success in this class will be documented by the increase in the overall GPA. This item will be used at the end of each semester and compared to the previous two semesters. GPA is important because it provides strong data for the student interest and success in the program. I will also look closely at the number of students who continue in the 6

program after being successful in Floriculture 1. As numbers for the program-completers

increase, the percentage of students learning and implementing 21st Century Skills increases. Surveymonkey.com will be used to determine how well students can use the photography equipment, if the blogging process is a positive experience and students overall thoughts on this semester long project. This will be accomplished in three online surveys to gain a better understanding of how students progress through the project. The state of Washington has set five goals to prepare Washington students to live, learn, and work as productive citizens in the 21st Century. These goals are to be attained by the year 2014 as related to Career and Technical Education courses. Goal 1: Each of Washingtons diverse students demonstrates high levels of achievement in the four state learning goals and graduates from high school ready to implement a positive plan for his or her future Goal 2: Highly skilled, diverse educators support the academic success of every student. Goal 3: All school, in partnership with students, families, and communities, provide safe, civil, healthy, and engaging environments for learning. Goal 4: Sufficient state resources are provided for every student to succeed through an efficient, equitable, and responsive K-12 funding system that promotes innovation and rewards results. Goal 5: OSPI supports effective school and student achievement through focused policies, sound management, and excellent service to the education community.

These goals outline my approach to this project. Students will gain 21st Century Skills in the areas of learning and innovation; specifically in creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem solving, and communication and collaboration. Information, media and technology skills will include information literacy, media literacy, and ICT literacy. Life and career skills relate to flexibility and adaptability, initiative and self-direction, social and cross-cultural, productivity and accountability and leadership and responsibility. CTE classes include a leadership component. This includes individual skills, group skills, and community and career skills. Employability skills are a large part of CTE classes as well since these classes revolve around specific career areas.

Students complete this semester-long project using foundational academic skill to gain

April 30, 2012

new, deeper levels of understanding. The project will challenge students to exceed present understanding of floral design. The learning experience requires initial research in order to create a viable plan. Class time and on-going instructor monitoring of progress provides the students with the knowledge to produce an end of project community gallery show. Students will choose one photograph and discuss the importance of what was learned and will reflect on the overall experience. This semester-long project involved thinking analytically, logically, and creatively; integrating experience and knowledge to form reasoned judgments and solve problems. Reflective blogs provide a place to comment on each project as well as comment of other students designs. Reflecting is a big part of understanding personal development. This area is lacking in many high school students. They will learn to assess skills, strengths, interests, and values as well as improve on them. The final component of this project is an electronic portfolio presented to the class in addition to choosing one photograph to display at a community gallery show. The purpose is to allow students to offer evidence of how they handle a long-term project and the responsibility involved. Students will communicate how their each individual component integrates into an overall assessment of themselves as learners and future goals. Presentations of each content standard include relevant details, reflections, anecdotes and a photograph as evidence to support the conclusions in their self-assessment. The content of the presentation reveals what students learned about their design skills, writing skill, self-direction, and future as a life-long learner. Foundational skills required for success in the presentation include making meaning from personal performance and assuming responsibility for utilizing resources in continued learning.

Curricular and teaching strategies: The present curriculum will continue to be used during this project. Additional lesson plans will be created to increase understanding and provide students the experience of reflection. Reflective blogs including photographs of each floral

design completed will provide the basis for this project. All students will work together in the end to evaluate each other and plan for a community gallery showing where staff, administration, parents, friends and others can come and enjoy their hard work and creativity.
