Galatians 5 NKJV Christian Liberty 5 Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us [a] free, and

do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. 2 Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you become circumcised, Christ 3 will profit you nothing. And I testify again to every man who becomes circumcised that he is a debtor to keep the whole law. 4 You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen 5 from grace. For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of 6 righteousness by faith. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love. ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 [d] envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against 24 such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also 26 walk in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. Galatians 5 MSG The Life of Freedom 1 Christ has set us free to live a free life. So take your stand! Never again let anyone put a harness of slavery on you. I am emphatic about this. The moment any one of you submits to circumcision or any other rulekeeping system, at that same moment Christ's hard-won gift of freedom is squandered. I repeat my warning: The person who accepts the ways of circumcision trades all the advantages of the free life in Christ for the obligations 4-6 of the slave life of the law. I suspect you would never intend this, but this is what happens. When you attempt to live by your own religious plans and projects, you are cut off from Christ, you fall out of grace. Meanwhile we expectantly wait for a satisfying relationship with the Spirit. For in Christ, neither our most conscientious religion nor disregard of religion amounts to anything. What matters is something far more interior: faith expressed in love. You were running superbly! Who cut in on you, deflecting you from the true course of obedience? This detour doesn't come from the One who called you into the race in the first place. And please don't toss this off as insignificant. It only takes a minute amount of yeast, you know, to permeate an entire loaf of bread. Deep down, the Master has given me confidence that you will not defect. But the one who is upsetting you, whoever he is, will bear the divine judgment. As for the rumor that I continue to preach the ways of circumcision (as I did in those pre11-12 7-10 2-3

Damascus Road days), that is absurd. Why would I still be persecuted, then? If I were preaching that old message, no one would be offended if I mentioned the Cross now and then—it would be so watereddown it wouldn't matter one way or the other. Why don't these agitators, obsessive as they are about circumcision, go all the way and castrate themselves! It is absolutely clear that God has called you to a free life. Just make sure that you don't use this freedom as an excuse to do whatever you want to do and destroy your freedom. Rather, use your freedom to serve one another in love; that's how freedom grows. For everything we know about God's Word is summed up in a single sentence: Love others as you love yourself. That's an act of true freedom. If you bite and ravage each other, watch out—in no time at all you will be annihilating each other, and where will your precious freedom be then? My counsel is this: Live freely, animated and motivated by God's Spirit. Then you won't feed the compulsions of selfishness. For there is a root of sinful self-interest in us that is at odds with a free spirit, just as the free spirit is incompatible with selfishness. These two ways of life are antithetical, so that you cannot live at times one way and at times another way according to how you feel on any given day. Why don't you choose to be led by the Spirit and so escape the erratic compulsions of a law-dominated existence? It is obvious what kind of life develops out of trying to get your own way all the time: repetitive, loveless, cheap sex; a stinking accumulation of mental and emotional garbage; frenzied and joyless grabs for happiness; trinket gods; magic-show religion; paranoid loneliness; cutthroat competition; all-consuming-yetnever-satisfied wants; a brutal temper; an impotence to love or be loved; divided homes and divided lives; small-minded and lopsided pursuits; the vicious habit of depersonalizing everyone into a rival; uncontrolled and uncontrollable addictions; ugly parodies of community. I could go on. This isn't the first time I have warned you, you know. If you use

You ran well. Who hindered you 8 from obeying the truth? This persuasion does not come from 9 Him who calls you. A little leaven 10 leavens the whole lump. I have confidence in you, in the Lord, that you will have no other mind; but he who troubles you shall bear his judgment, whoever he is.
11

And I, brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why do I still suffer persecution? Then the offense of 12 the cross has ceased. I could wish that those who trouble you would even cut themselves off!
13

For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one 14 another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as [b] 15 yourself.” But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another! Walking in the Spirit
16

I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the 17 flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do 18 the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19

Now the works of the flesh are [c] evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, 20 lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish

your freedom this way, you will not inherit God's kingdom. But what happens when we live God's way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely. Legalism is helpless in bringing this about; it only gets in the way. Among those who belong to Christ, everything connected with getting our own way and mindlessly responding to what everyone else calls necessities is killed off for good—crucified. Since this is the kind of life we have chosen, the life of the Spirit, let us make sure that we do not just hold it as an idea in our heads or a sentiment in our hearts, but work out its implications in every detail of our lives. That means we will not compare ourselves with each other as if one of us were better and another worse. We have far more interesting things to do with our lives. Each of us is an original. Galatians 5 AMP 5 In [this] freedom Christ has made us free [and completely liberated us]; stand fast then, and do not be hampered and held ensnared and submit again to a yoke of slavery [which you have once put off].

gracious favor and unmerited blessing).

15

For we, [not relying on the Law but] through the [Holy] Spirit’s [help], by faith anticipate and wait for the blessing and good for which our righteousness and right standing with God [our [b] conformity to His will in purpose, thought, and action, causes us] to hope.
6

But if you bite and devour one another [in partisan strife], be careful that you [and your whole fellowship] are not consumed by one another.
16

But I say, walk and live [habitually] in the [Holy] Spirit [responsive to and controlled and guided by the Spirit]; then you will certainly not gratify the cravings and desires of the flesh (of human nature without God).
17

For [if we are] in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith activated and energized and expressed and working through love.
7

You were running the race nobly. Who has interfered in (hindered and stopped you from) your heeding and following the Truth?
8

For the desires of the flesh are opposed to the [Holy] Spirit, and the [desires of the] Spirit are opposed to the flesh (godless human nature); for these are antagonistic to each other [continually withstanding and in conflict with each other], so that you are not free but are prevented from doing what you desire to do.
18

This [evil] persuasion is not from Him Who called you [Who invited you to freedom in Christ].
9

But if you are guided (led) by the [Holy] Spirit, you are not subject to the Law.
19

A little leaven (a slight inclination to error, or a few false teachers) leavens the whole lump [it perverts the whole conception of faith or misleads the whole church].
10

Now the doings (practices) of the flesh are clear (obvious): they are immorality, impurity, indecency,
20

[For my part] I have confidence [toward you] in the Lord that you will take no contrary view of the matter but will come to think with me. But he who is unsettling you, whoever he is, will have to bear the penalty.
11

Idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, anger (ill temper), selfishness, divisions (dissensions), party spirit (factions, sects with peculiar opinions, heresies),
21

Notice, it is I, Paul, who tells you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no profit [a] (advantage, avail) to you [ for if you distrust Him, you can gain nothing from Him].
3

But, brethren, if I still preach circumcision [as some accuse me of doing, as necessary to salvation], why am I still suffering persecution? In that case the cross has ceased to be a stumbling block and is made meaningless (done away).
12

I wish those who unsettle and [c] confuse you would [ go all the way and] cut themselves off!
13

I once more protest and testify to every man who receives circumcision that he is under obligation and bound to practice the whole of the Law and its ordinances.
4

For you, brethren, were [indeed] called to freedom; only [do not let your] freedom be an incentive to your flesh and an opportunity or [d] excuse [for selfishness], but through love you should serve one another.
14

If you seek to be justified and declared righteous and to be given a right standing with God through the Law, you are brought to nothing and so separated (severed) from Christ. You have fallen away from grace (from God’s

For the whole Law [concerning [e] human relationships] is complied with in the one precept, You shall love your neighbor as [you do] yourself.

Envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you beforehand, just as I did previously, that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom 22 of God. But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace, patience (an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), 23 faithfulness, Gentleness (meekness, humility), self-control (self-restraint, continence). Against [f] such things there is no law [ that 24 can bring a charge]. And those who belong to Christ Jesus (the Messiah) have crucified the flesh (the godless human nature) with its passions and appetites and 25 desires. If we live by the [Holy] Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. [g] [If by the Holy Spirit we have our life in God, let us go forward [h] walking in line, our conduct 26 controlled by the Spirit.] Let us not become vainglorious and selfconceited, competitive and challenging and provoking and irritating to one another, envying and being jealous of one another.
