Corn flowe rs , I was so awestr uck by the park that I was rend ered sp eechless. Fortunately, I re cove re d, and I’m rather embarr asse d to tell you that th is was my first visit to Ol d Fait hf ul. (Spank me for not tak ing advant age of more of Ameri ca’s treasu re s, ou r Nati onal Park s.) We ha d a day in Ja ck son, Wyom ing, tr yi ng to vi ew the Gr and Te tons th roug h a smoky fore st -fire ha ze, then it was on to ou r base camp, a fr iend’s cabi n on the Ga ll at in Rive r in Big Sky, Mont ana. Ea ch day, inste ad of loll ing arou nd on the cabi n’s su nny de ck , we drove, wa lked, and hi ke d throug h as many of the 2,219,789 acres of Yell ow stone as po ssible. (On ly ext reme at hletes coul d have done be tter.) We sp ent a day in Bozeman and thou ght ab out enrol ling in some cl asse s at Mon- tana St ate be caus e the students lo oked so outdo orsy, but inste ad opted for lu nch at Te d’s Mont an a Gr ill , one of thos e re s- taurant s st ar te d by the great ac tivist and envi ron me nt al ist Te d Tu rner . My fo od was delicious , even thou gh I forgot to have a bison bu rger. One th ing is cer tain: a we ek is not enough ti me in Yell ow stone. Another th ing is uncer tain… and disc oncer ti ng . Yell ow stone is ac tu ally a massive ca ldera of a supe r vol - cano. Cata clysmic er upt ions have histori ca l- ly oc cu rred ever y 600,000 to 800,000 ye ars . The last one was 640,000 ye ars ago, with an er upt ion 1,000 ti me s large r than the 1980 er upt ion of Mt . Saint Helens. The ther ma l energy rele as ed from St . Helens was equa l to 1,600 ti me s the size of the atom ic bomb dropp ed on Hi ro sh ima. Without ge tt ing to o dramati c ab out th is , Butterb eans , I ask you to do the math .
