I am glad that I belong to a spirit-filled church like this one. The past several weeks reminded me how God is working through you. The cards you returned during “1,001 Blessings” show thoughtfulness, compassion, and generosity. I laughed at the silly costumes you put on for Trunk or Treat, just so neighborhood children would have a fun and safe event. Dozens of you prayed during our 24 hour prayer vigil before the election. Hundreds of encouraging phone calls were made by precious “care callers” to every family in our church. Each week teachers, workers, singers, greeters and helpers unselfishly serve. Thank you for being the Spirit controlled servants God has called you to be. Paul Powell wrote about a man who opened a bar in a small community. The church people didn’t like it so they prayed for God to close it down. Within weeks lightning hit the building and burned it to the ground. The people were surprised, but pleased. Then they discovered the owner was suing them. He claimed their prayers were responsible for his loss. Of course they denied the charge. The judge summarized it all succinctly, “It seems the bar owner believes in the power of prayer and the church people do not!” Prayer is more powerful than you realize. It changes churches and people. However, quick half-hearted prayers do not. Passionate persistent prayers will soften the hardest hearts. While I’m in Guatemala next week, Dr. Calvin Kelley will preach in my absence. He is not only a friend but a faithful minister of the gospel. I know you will give him your prayerful support. Never underestimate the influence of parents with children. Faith in Christ is more caught than taught. When parents are involved in church, really involved, the children are more apt to life godly lives. When parents are not involved, the children are almost always weak spiritually. For the grandchildren the consequences are far worse, many never see the inside of a church, much less know of our savior. Like many traits, spirituality often runs in the family.
