ON THE MAT The University of Iowa wrestling team opens the 2012-13 season Friday with three duals on the campus of Tennessee-Cha anooga. The Hawkeyes wrestle three consecu ve duals beginning at 2:30 p.m. (CT) vs. Cumberland (Tenn.). Iowa faces No. 20 Virginia at 4 p.m. (CT) before facing host TennesseeCha anooga at 6 p.m. All three duals will be contested inside Maclellan Gym. FIRST ONE IS A BIG ONE The Hawkeyes have won their rst dual meet of the year in 55 consecu ve season. Since 1910-11, Iowa owns an 87-11-4 record in the rst dual of the season. The Hawkeyes havent lost their rst dual of the season since dropping a 14-12 decision to Oklahoma in 1956-57. AN UNCOMMON DUAL OCCURANCE The 2012-13 season is only the second me during the Tom Brands era the Hawkeyes have opened the season with a dual meet. Since 2006, the Hawkeyes have opened the season at an open tournament ve mes. The Hawkeyes last opened the season with a dual meet in 2010-11, a 45-0 win over Iowa Central CC. MCDONOUGH STREAK HITS 28 Senior Ma McDonough nished the season with a NCAA tle and a 28-match winning streak, his longest streak since winning 32 in a row to start the 2009-10 season. McDonoughs last loss was an 11-7 over me decision to Illinois Jesse Delgado (Dec. 2, 2011). He has since defeated Delgado twice -- rst at the Na onal Duals tournament (6-3) and most recently in the seminals of the Big Ten tournament (4-3).

RAMOS IS DUAL DOMINANT Junior Tony Ramos recorded ve falls, four major decisions and three technical falls in 18 duals last season, racking up a teamhigh 74 points and a 17-1 dual record. He has just one loss in 30 career duals. BALLWEG IS BACK AT 141 Senior Mark Ballweg is back in the dual lineup for the rst me since 2010-11. Ballweg opened that season as Iowas star ng 141-pounder and wrestled his way to a 15-3 record that included seven falls. He has won his last 14 bouts and owns a career record of 25-3 at 141 pounds. THE NEW KID IN TOWN Brody Grothus is the only wrestler listed at 149 pounds among Iowas probables, which means hes likely to make his collegiate debut this week. Grothus, the only redshirt freshman in the probable lineup, earned an 18-6 record wrestling unattached at 149 last season. He won his rst seven decisions last season, including the tle at the Lindenwood Open, and totaled nine pins. He was also the winner of the preseason intrasquad wrestle-os. MOUNT ST. JOHN Derek St. John was the last of the unbeaten last season. He won his rst 11 decisions before suering a knee injury on Dec. 8. He returned to the lineup on Jan. 20 and nished the season with a 21-3 mark that included a 157-pound Big Ten tle and a NCAA runner-up nish. EVANS ALMIGHTY Sophomore Mike Evans returns to the 165-pound lineup following a 26-8 redshirt freshman campaign that saw him total 15 bonus point victories. In dual compe on last season, Evans racked up 61 points in 14 victories, an average of 4.38 points per dual win, more than any other Hawkeye.

THE OLE SWITCHEROO Senior Grant Gambrall, an All-American at 184 in 2011, and junior Ethen Lo house, an All-American at 174 in 2012, are ip-opping weight classes in 2012-13. This weekend, Gambrall will make his 174 pound career debut and Lo house will make his rst career appearance at 184. THE BIG GUY IS BACK Sophomore Bobby Telford returns to the 285-pound lineup following an All-American freshman season. He totaled 29 wins last year, the fourth highest total on the team, and nine pins, second only to McDonoughs 12. MCDONOUGH AMONG THE BEST Senior Ma McDonough owns a career record of 100-4. His .962 winning percentage ranks fourth in program history among wrestlers with a minimum 95 decisions. Iowas top wrestlers in program history based on winning percentage include: 1. T.J. With a top eight nish at the 2013 NCAA tournament, McDonough would become the 18th four- me All-American in school history. With a trip to the nals hed become join Ed Banach, Duane Goldman and Lincoln McIlravy as the schools only fourme NCAA nalist. A third na onal tle would make McDonough the seventh wrestler in school history to earn three NCAA Championships (Ed Banach, Tom Brands, Barry Davis, Lincoln McIlravy, Joe Williams, Jim Zalesky).

TENNESSEE CHATTANOOGA 10 YEARS LATER Associate head coach Terry Brands was named the head coach at TennesseeCha anooga in 2002. He served as the head coach of the Mocs for three seasons, leading the team to the 2005 Southern Conference tle while crowning three conference champs and two All-Americans in his nal season. TICKET INFORMATION Season and single-meet ckets are now available for purchase on hawkeyesports.com. Season ckets for eight home dates (including the Iowa City Duals) are available for $85. Single-meet ckets for Iowa City Duals (11/24), Lehigh (12/6), Purdue (1/6), Nebraska (2/10) and Edinboro (2/16) are $12 for adults, $8 for youth, and free for kids ve-years old and younger. Single-meet ckets to Iowa State (12/1), Ohio State (1/4) and Penn State (2/1) are $15 for adults, $8 for youth and $2 for kids ve-years old and younger. ATTENDANCE LEADERS AT IT AGAIN The Hawkeyes have eight home dates on the schedule. Iowa hosted the third largest dual crowd in NCAA history (15,400) when Oklahoma State visited Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Jan. 7, 2012. In six home dates last season, the Hawkeyes averaged a na onal record 9,014 fans. That includes duals vs. Oklahoma State (15,400), Illinois (7,330), Northern Iowa (7,078), Northwestern (7,954), Minnesota (9,511) and Wisconsin (6,809). Iowas 9,014 average was a na onal dual record. It marked the fourth straight year Iowa averaged over 8,000 fans per dual and the sixth straight season the Hawkeyes were the na ons a endance leaders. HAWKEYE WRESTLING HISTORY Iowas overall dual meet record is 906-219-31 (.797) in 102 seasons. The Hawkeyes have won 23 na onal tles and 34 Big Ten tles. Iowas 51 NCAA Champions have won a total of 79 NCAA Individual tles, crowning six three- me and 16 two- me champions. The Hawkeyes 105 Big Ten champions have won a total of 190 conference tles. There have been seven four- me, 18 threeme and 28 two- me Iowa winners. Iowas 147 All-Americans have earned All-America status 297 mes, including 17 four- me, 31 three- me and 37 two- me honorees. 39 YEARS OF DOMINANCE Since 1974, only seven schools have captured the NCAA Championship. During that 38-year span, the Hawkeyes have won 23 team tles, including nine straight from 1978-86. The other schools include Oklahoma State (7), Minnesota (3), Iowa State (2), Penn State (2), Arizona State (1) and Oklahoma (1). 2012 13 SCHEDULE Eleven of Iowas 21 dual opponents are ranked in the top 25 of the preseason NWCA/USA Today Division I Coaches Poll. They include Minnesota (1), Penn State (2), Oklahoma State (3), Ohio State (5), Illinois (6), Nebraska (9), Michigan (16), Virginia (17), Edinboro (20), Lehigh (21) and Purdue (23). Iowas schedule includes eight home dates and three postseason events, including the NWCA Na onal Duals (Feb. 23), the Big Ten Championships (Mar. 9-10), and NCAA Championships (Mar. 21-23).

Tom Brands Head Coach (University of Iowa, 1992)
Three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year, Tom Brands, is in his seventh season as head wrestling coach at the University of Iowa. A 1996 Olympic gold medalist and member of wrestlings Hall of Fame, Brands is only the eighth wrestling coach at the University of Iowa. The former Hawkeye wrestler was a four-time All-American and threetime national champion (1989-92) at Iowa. He has a 111-10-1 (.914) overall and 43-5 (.896) Big Ten coaching record at Iowa, and a 12830-1 (.812) career mark. In six years as Iowas head coach, Brands has led the Hawkeyes to three NCAA and Big Ten team titles, crowning seven NCAA champions, 10 Big Ten champions and 34 All-Americans. Iowa has honored 34 academic all-Big Ten honorees, including a school-record 10 in 2010-11. The Hawkeyes have qualied 53 wrestlers for the NCAA Championships in the last six years, sending the entire 10-man lineup in 2009-10. Iowa has also won four of the last ve Big Ten regular season titles. During Brands tenure, Iowa set school records for longest dual unbeaten (84) and winning streaks (69), longest dual road unbeaten (51) and winning streaks (44), most Carver-Hawkeye Arena victories (11) and most dual shutouts (8). Iowa also made another entry in the record books, setting the national collegiate dual meet attendance record of 15,955 when it hosted Iowa State Dec. 6, 2008, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The previous record of 15,646 was set Feb. 1, 2002, when Minnesota hosted Iowa at the Target Center in Minneapolis. The Hawkeyes won the Iowa State dual, 20-15. Iowa has led the nation in attendance in each of Brands six seasons, setting an NCAA all-time attendance average of 9,014 in 2011-12. Brands was named 2008 NWCA Coach of the Year after leading the Hawkeyes to their rst NCAA team title since 2000 and their rst Big Ten team title since 2004. He was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2010, becoming the rst coach in conference history to earn the honor in three consecutive seasons. Brands served as head coach at Virginia Tech University for two seasons (2005-06), recording a 17-20 dual mark. In his rst season with the Hokies, Brands led the team to the 2005 regular season Atlantic Coast Conference title, set a school record for dual meet wins (16) and had a school-record ve wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships. During his tenure, Virginia Tech crowned ve ACC champions and had two All-Americans. Senior heavyweight Mike Faust was named 2006 ACC Wrestler of the Year. Prior to taking the helm at Virginia Tech, Brands was an assistant coach at Iowa for 12 seasons (19932004). He helped the Hawkeyes to a 177-27 dual record, seven NCAA and eight Big Ten titles, while crowning 23 NCAA champions, 73 All-Americans and 36 Big Ten champions. He was named the National Wrestling Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year in 2000. In 2004, he was one of three coaches for the U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling team, participating in Athens. Brands also served as assistant coach for the 2002 and 2003 U.S. Freestyle World Teams, earning Freestyle Coach of the Year honors from USA Wrestling both years. He was also a member of the U.S. coaching staff at the 2001 World Championships, and has coached a number of other U.S. teams in international competition. As a competitor, Brands won the 1996 Olympic freestyle gold medal at 136.5 pounds in Atlanta, GA. He also won a gold medal at the 1993 World Freestyle Championships in Toronto, two World Cup gold medals (1994, 1995) and was the 1995 Pan American Games champion. He won four U.S. National titles (1993-96) and made four straight U.S. World or Olympic teams (1993-96). Along with his twin brother, Terry, Tom was named 1993 USA Wrestling Athlete of the Year, the 1993 John Smith Outstanding Freestyle Wrestler and 1993 Amateur Wrestling News Man of the Year. He was inducted into wrestlings Hall of Fame in 2001. Brands was a four-time All-American at Iowa (1989-92). During his Hawkeye career, he won three NCAA titles and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the 1992 NCAA Championships. Also a three-time Big Ten champion, Brands won 95 percent of his matches at Iowa. His career mark of 158-7-2, included an undefeated season in 1991 (45-0). The Sheldon, Iowa, native was born April 9, 1968. He earned his B.S. degree in physical education from Iowa in 1992. He and his wife, Jeni, have three children, Madigan, Kinsee and Tommy.
