Both my wife and I have family in Italy and we’re just completing our decision to go visit them next summer since the last they’ve seen of us my wife was 4 months pregnant with our first child (now our kids are 4 & 18 months - so it’s been a while). I like to describe the Italian culture as being a completely romantic lifestyle with very simple ‘old world’ vocation where most of the residents only pay taxes at the cash registers (or “select cash registers” if you will). And with the recent election results here, there is an overwhelming sentiment amongst the people in my sphere that 2013 is to be the year they completely maximize their tax offsets since the definition of paying ‘your fair share’ is absolutely divided. Smart if you think about it and really smart if you’re making your real estate portfolio the primary vehicle to protect your wealth in the short term.

of Redondo Beach - just outside of Hermosa Beach, known as the “Old Salt Lake” was sold to Henry Allenson and William Johnson. This sale precipitated the establishment of Pacific Salt Works, which extracted and sold salt and operated through approx. 1908. When Don Miguel Dominquez died in 1882, he left the Rancho San Pedro to his six daughters. Three of his daughters, Susana, Guadalupe, and Maria de Los Reyes Dominguez, inherited portions of the estate, each including individual sections collectively known as the Ocean Tract. In 1890, Susana Dominquez married Gregorio Del Amo y Gonzalez. Del Amo Boulevard is named after this family. In 1889 this coastal tract of 433 acres was sold to the Redondo Beach Improvement Company, founded by Robert Thompson and John Ainsworth, for $12,000. They promoted, developed, and sold land that eventually became the nucleus of the city of Redondo Beach. On April 18, 1892, Redondo voters adopted city-hood by a vote of 177-10. The first City Hall was built in 1908 at Benita and Emerald Street. The name of the city is Spanish for “round,” which either refers to the half-round street pattern of the original town site, or the adjacent “Rancho Sausal Redondo” (“Ranch of the Round Clump of Willows”), which was just north of the city. The City was becoming “The Place” for tourists. Railroads and steamships brought people by the thousands, not to mention freight loads of oil and lumber. At this time, Redondo was the first port of Los Angeles County. Steamers from the Pacific Steamship Company stopped at Redondo four times a week, at one of its three piers, as part of regular runs between San Francisco and San Diego. The Redondo Railway Company and the Santa Fe Railroad left Los Angeles daily for Redondo at regular intervals. Eventually the City was served by Henry Huntington’s Big Red Electric Cars. Redondo’s popularity began a slow decline when San Pedro Harbor started to take shape in 1899. By 1912, the Pacific Steamship Company stopped calling at Redondo altogether. Lumber schooners still used Pier No. 3 at Topaz Street until the railroad pulled out in 1926. Because of prohibition, the $250,000 Hotel Redondo closed its doors and in 1925 was sold for scrap lumber - the price was $300. Storms have been an ever-present danger to the City’s piers. They have been washed out, then rebuilt, then washed out again. Redondo’s first breakwater was built in 1939 and although the cost was more than $500,000, it provided only limited protection. Because of the way it was constructed, wave action and the normal movement of the beach sand was altered. Following every storm, sand accumulated north of the breakwater. Eventually the beach area between Diamond and Beryl Streets was obliterated. A raging storm in 1953 caused extensive damage not only to the breakwater, but to City streets and private property. Redondo’s population boomed in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1890, the population was 668; in 1940

Written By deniSe Kano Like all of the south Bay cities, redondo Beach experienced rapid development in the 1960’s and 1970’s, at which time many of the older homes and buildings were torn down. High-density housing, two-on-a-lot, and numerous shopping malls became the name of the game. However, some residents in older redondo Beach neighborhoods banded together and formed a preservation society with the goal of protecting the remaining historic homes in the city. one such protected area is the Gertruda avenue History district, featuring homes full of character and history – homes that reflect the original, early look of redondo Beach.

Located on the 300 block of north Gertruda avenue, many of these historic homes feature a blend of craftsman and colonial revival style. Fourteen of the homes are included in the city’s Historic district designation and are also listed in the national register of Historic Places as part of the original townsite Historical district (1906-1923),

the homes on north Gertruda avenue represent one of the remaining collections of homes built during the early settlement period of redondo Beach. collectively, they are considered a valuable resource of historic significance to the city.

304 North gertruda avenue this home was built in 1911 by dr. ernest g. Butt and his wife, olive, in the classic california Bungalow style. Built for $2,000, the family lived here through 1971. dr. Butt was a one of the first doctors in redondo Beach, and was a noted physician and surgeon. 315 North gertruda avenue 306 North gertruda avenue Built in 1921, this california Bungalow home was built by John J. carr and his wife, lilath, who lived here through 1936. 316 North gertruda avenue 307 North gertruda avenue this lovely home was built in 1907. Walter gephart, a manager of a lumber company, lived here in 1920, having moved from his previous home at 519 S. catalina. charles Kanouse, whose son was the only soldier from redondo Beach to be killed in World War i, lived here from 1921-1926. margaret mccoskey, a teacher at redondo high School, resided here beginning in 1947. 308 North gertruda avenue this craftsman home was built in 1911 for $1,500. the home was built by J. f. lurch, a proprietor of a general merchandise store in redondo Beach. mr. lurch and his wife

James tucker was the original resident of this california Bungalow home, built in 1913. later residents included teachers and a storekeeper, typical residents of the original townsite. 317 North gertruda avenue this craftsman Bungalow was built in 1922. Kenneth e. Boggs, an employee of the Sweetser market in redondo Beach, lived here in 1925. 318 North gertruda avenue this colonial revival home was built in 1907. two lumber surveyors, h.l., and f.c. hossler, lived here in 1912 with f.c.’s wife, mary. in 1936, John Jenkins, an employee of the moonstone gambling parlor in redondo Beach, lived here. 319 North gertruda avenue Built in 1911, this craftsman/colonial revival home consists of four apartments. it was built by Samuel humer, a motorman for pacific electric, for $2.000. in 1912, other tenants were employed by pacific electric, Star Blacksmith Shop, and Standard oil. 329 North gertruda avenue This duplex and the detached three-car garage were built before 1920 and are a good example of Craftsman-influenced, eclectic cottage architecture. This style of architecture was common in california from 1905 to the early 1920’s. the first known occupant of the house was John h. foote. mr. foote was listed in the city directory (1912-13) as an engineer for pacific light and power corporation.

don’t let appearances fool you. najas’s place may look like your average dive bar, but it’s much more than that thanks to one simple fact. naja’s has 88 beers on tap, stretching from one end of the bar to the other. located right off the redondo Beach pier at 154 international Boardwalk, naja’s has also been a great place to people watch and enjoy spectacular views of the pacific since 1981. “it is so much fun and a really great vibe. everyone has fun when they come down here and the beer selection is amazing,” said Kara Smail, beer buyer and special events coordinator at naja’s. “no other place is like it in the South Bay.” With so many beers on tap from every corner of the globe, naja’s has kegs in every spare inch of the bar. and to make sure customers know all of the beers on tap, it has a large white board high above the bar to prevent any confusion. that allows employees to easily erase and add new beers to the list, which happens every few weeks. much of the selection is based on the season, with the bar keeping only 20 beers on tap throughout the year. naja’s is currently featuring a slew of pumpkin beers and will soon be getting into the christmas spirit when it hosts a christmas Beer festival the first week of december. customers will be able to try 15 different holiday inspired beers, including ‘dead Santa’ from cismontane Brewing co. in rancho Santa margarita. fun names are all over naja’s beer menu, including: double daddy, evil twin, dog ate my homework and pliny the elder--naja’s most popular beer. naja’s has also made it a priority to showcase local breweries like Strand Brewing co. and monkish Brewing co. in torrance. “it is really important to have local representation and have everyone support each other,” Smail said. “it has become a huge part of what we do because of how much the craft beer scene has taken off.” prices for each beer vary, with pints usually ranging in price from $5 to $8, large glasses costing $8 to $9 and pitchers ranging between $16 to $18. however, mondayfriday from 4-6p.m., naja’s offers $1 off pints, $2 off large glasses and $3 off pitchers. “the bottom line is, if you make good beer, we will try and get it in here,” said Smail.
