Dear Holcomb Bridge Community Member, Holcomb Bridge Middle School is pleased to announce the second annual One School, One Book project. The goal of this project is to promote literacy and foster a community of readers, while creating a common experience: everyone reads the same book. Our school has chosen Linda Sue ParksA Long Walk to Water, a mixed fiction and non-fiction story about two children in Sudan. The non-fiction character, Salva, endures the tragedy of war and the loss of family. Nya, the fictional character, experiences the difficult and dangerous life caused by a lack of clean drinking water. At school, students will spend time each morning from September 17th to September 28th reading the novel with a mentor and participating in a variety of activities and discussion questions. Prior to the reading, students will immerse themselves in an entire day of learning about the culture, history and environment of Sudan. HBMS has partnered with a group called Mothering Across Continents, a nonprofit organization that will help educate our students about Sudan before the novel and throughout the year. They have also arranged for a guest speaker, a Lost Boy, to come speak to students at a ceremony on September 28th. A Lost Boy is a term for one of the thousands of boys who, as a result of the war, were left homeless and orphaned. As we strive to educate the whole child, we impress upon them the importance of living as a global citizen and helping those in need. As a result, HBMS has also committed to raising $10,000 to help Mothering Across Continents build a school in South Sudan. We would be honored if you would join us in this project by participating in any of the following ways: 1. Donate money to help reach our goal of $10,000 2. Read the novel! In addition, we will have a parent guide with discussion questions and a summary, soon to be located on our Holcomb Bridge website 3. Join students at school one day, September 17-28, from 7:45 to 8:13 to read the novel with a mentor-led student group. 4. Attend the assembly on September 28th which will feature a Lost Boy as our guest speaker. 5. Join your student for lunch as we wrap up the novel on September 28th. 6. To attend the above school activities, please rsvp to StrishA@fultonschools.org or call 770-5945280. Thank you for being a contributing business partner. We would like to thank you for your support by including your company name on our One Book website and other related communications. Happy Reading! HBMS Faculty and Staff
