SHAPE International School Construction Update
By Major Curtis Fryman (USA – AF), NSHQ Engineer
or those who are new to SHAPE, welcome to the world of construction. There seems to be new construction all over the installation. Some, like the new NSHQ Facility, near the SHAPE Club, are nearing completion, while the school projects are far from being done. But we’re starting to see a light at the end of the distant tunnel. Now don’t get me wrong - there is still another six-years-worth of construction ahead before all of the dust settles, but the first phase is actually a little ahead of schedule. The first phase of construction began in November 2011 with a groundbreaking ceremony held on the future site of the new
be for through traffic while the right hand side will be for busses just like Avenue De Sofia is currently configured. The key difference with Avenue De Luxembourg is it will not be 100% closed while buses are dropping off/picking up students. There will also be a drop-off/pick-up area farther down on the right-hand side of the street past the bus area. This will be similar to airport drop off/pick up locations. Parents will be allowed to momentarily stop, but they will not be allowed to park and leave their vehicles unattended. At no time will stopping/parking to drop off/pick up students be allowed on the left side of the street. Following the ISB move to their new temporary facilities, the next phase of construction will begin with the demolition of the current ISB facilities. The academic facility in Phase #2 is also scheduled to be completed during the summer of 2014 with follow-on demolition and landscaping continuing through January 2015. Then looking toward the future we are planning to begin the construction of Phase #3 in January 2015.
With all of the work going on near the schools we ask everyone to go a little slower, plan more time for parking in the GB lots, and be on the look-out for pedestrians who are looking at the construction work and not looking Phase 1 of the SIS construction project underway. In the meantime we are also nearing completion of the temporary facilities located in the 400 area along Avenue De Luxembourg. This will be the new site of the International School of Belgium (ISB). The ISB will be moving into the temporary facilities in two phases, with their primary section resuming classes in the new facilities following the All Saints break. Then, the ISB secondary section will move to the temporary facilities following the holiday/ New Year’s break. With the new ISB location there will be
