You can Think Auburn First this holiday season

hen I talk to local residents, they often express to me their desire to not only maintain our strong sense of community in Auburn but also the need to build on our successes and continually improve the overall quality of life. How will this be done? Keeping more of our hard-earned dollars re-circulating in our local economy is an indispensable way to strengthen the Auburn community. In America, the consumer is

community. Auburn has thrived for over 164 years because of the strong relationship between residents and our small business owners. Merchants in Auburn provide exceptionally friendly service, unique goods and services, provide jobs to local residents, donate to local charities and festivals, support our schools, and provide needed tax revenue to local governments to strengthen public safety, fix our roads and create wonderful park and recreation opportunities. When we Think Auburn First, we pay the salary of the cop on the beat, the firefighter

responding to an emergency and the road that gets paved. When we Think Auburn First we support Little League, the Girl Scouts, the Auburn Symphony, parades and numerous local charities. So, let us, as Auburn area residents, use our dollar power to support our Auburn community and our merchants. We live in Auburn because its a special place. Lets keep it that way.

Auburn Festival of Lights Parade gearing up to illuminate streets

Around 14,000 people turned out to see last years parade of lights

Fran Haynes, president of The Sugar Plump Fairies who have been participating in the parade since 1997

elebrating the longest nights of the year with lights, feasting, and festive gatherings has been the tradition of many cultures for centuries. This year, the Auburn Chamber of Commerce continues that longstanding tradition with their annual Festival of Lights Parade which will begin at 5 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012 at Cherry Avenue in Auburn. From there, the parade will continue onto Lincoln Way, then left onto High Street., before finishing at the Gold County Fairgrounds. The light parade has been enchanting Auburn residents for decades. Its a great way to celebrate the holiday season, said Bruce Cosgrove, CEO of the Auburn Chamber of Commerce. Last year around 14,000 peo-

ple turned out to see the brilliantly lit floats creatively decorated by local businesses, organizations, and even individual families. Its magical, said Fran Haynes, president of The Sugar Plump Fairies who have been participating in the parade

since 1997. You get to taste fame for one night. The Sugar Plump Fairies delight in garnering attention for a number of philanthropic causes, such as ringing bells for the Salvation Army and partnering with other organizations like the Boys and Girls Club and Healing Journeys, a non-profit organization helping those with cancer. For Haynes and the Sugar Plump Fairies, participating in the Festival of Lights Parade provides an excellent outlet for their fun and silliness as well as an opportunity to further their charitable goals. If you would like to participate this year, applications are available at auburnchamber .net or visit the Auburn Chamber of Commerce office to pick up a physical copy.
