The Patience Of Imam Hussain (AS) 7

gave you life; then will He cause you to die, and will again bring you to life; and again to Him will ye return..
This verse of the Holy Quran discusses how Allah (SWT) created man. It shows the reality of man's existence. Before man came into this world he was dead. Allah (SWT) then gave man life. The word death means the absence of life as opposed to being killed. Allah began the creation of man from dust. He made him complete and then breathed into him his spirit (32:7-9). Then We did grow it into another creation; so blessed be Allah, the best of creators (23:14). According to the verse 2:28, the stage before the life of this world has been called the first death. Then comes the first life in this world, followed by the second death transferring the man to the next world, and lastly will come the second life on the Day of Resurrection. Man at the level of being created is related to the command of Allah.

The return journey of man to Allah is in his own hands. The path back to Allah has a short happy path or a long unhappy path. The short path leads man to spiritual heights and raises his status and rank and takes him to divine nearness. The unhappy path is a long route that makes man low until he reaches the divine presence encompassed on every side and debased.

Shaitans Role

He (Satan) said: "Then by Thy Might I will surely beguile them all, except Thy servants from among them, the purified one" (38:82-83);He said: "My Lord! because Thou hast left me to stray, I will certainly make (evil) fair-seeming to them on earth, and I will certainly cause them all to go astray, except Thy servants from among them, the freed(purified) ones" (15:39-40). Allah quotes him as saying: "He said: 'As Thou hast caused me to go astray, I will certainly lie in wait for them in Thy straight path. Then I will certainly come to them from before them and from behind them, and from their right-hand side and from their left-hand side; and Thou shalt not find most of them thankful'" (7:16-17). Thus some will be thankful and others will not. The purified ones will be thankful. The purified and thankful ones are the ones on whom Shaitan has no hold. Shaitan makes man forget Allah and calls man to sin and disobedience. By sinning man chooses the longer difficult path to Allah and is debased on his way.

The Imam Zainul Abedeen (AS)
When the captives were taken to the tyrant's court Ubaidullah bin Ziyad looked at Ali bin alHussain (AS) and asked him his name. The Imam replied Ali bin al-Hussain. Ibn Ziyad replied did Allah not kill Ali bin al-Hussain (AS). After a silence on Ibn Ziad's prompting the Imam (AS) replied that he had a 6 month old younger brother also known as Ali bin al-Hussain who was martyred on the plains of Karbala by the people. Ibn Ziad insisted that Allah killed him. Again the Imam was prompted and forced by Ibne Ziad to respond. Imam Ali bin al-Hussain (AS) responded with two ayat of the Holy Quran

Allah takes the souls at the time of their death (39:42) No soul may die except with Allah's leave (3:145) In sura 39 ayat 42 it is stated that Allah receives souls at the time of their death and that soul which has not died yet (when a person sleeps). Allah keeps the soul for whom He has ordained death and returns the souls of the sleepers until their appointed time. In sura 3 ayat 145 it is made clear that none can die unless Allah wills it. Death can come neither before nor after that time. Thus keeping away from battle does not avoid death. The ayat further clarifies that those who desire the benefits of this world and do not pass the test of Allah. They do not spend their wealth and lives in the way of Allah. Such people lose their portion in the hereafter. On the other had those who are thankful for Allah's bounties and put at His disposal everything they get from Him shall be rewarded in the hereafter.

Imam Hussain (AS) speech in Karbala
"I praise God who created the world and designated it as a house of annihilation and placed the earthly people in different states. One who is deceived by the world is unwise and one who is bewitched by the world is miserable, lest you might be tricked by the world since it disconnects hope of anyone tilting towards it and disappoints any covetous person who pins hope on it." "Devil overcame you and you dis-remembered our Lord, death to you and what you want. Inna Lillah wa Inna Ilayha Rajaun. These are people who were first faithful and later became infidel,--" "Woe unto you! what do you lose if you listen to me? I call you to the straight path, whoever obeys remains aright and whoever disobeys is dead. All you disobey me for you're filled in your

stomachs with illegal stuff and your hearts are sealed with atrocity, woe unto you! Do you not keep silent and hear me?"

The Event of Karbala
If one thinks about the event of Karbala in the light of the verses above it is clear that the men in Karbala had a clear choice. They could be with the purified Imam or against him. Those that had cleansed their souls and remembered Allah (SWT) were not misled by Shaitan and remained the companions of the Imam (AS). Those that had defects in their souls such as greed, avarice jealousy forgot Allah (SWT) due to their love for this world and were misled by Shaitan. Those who were misled by Shaitan in Karbala faced disgrace in this world and torture in Barzakh followed by descent into the depths of Hell.

Key things to avoid
As per the Imam (AS) speech above there are a few key things to be careful about and avoid 1) Do not fill your stomach with illegal stuff (haraam food) 2) Do not be attached to the things of this world 3) Do not covet worldly wealth 4) Do not give Shaitan power over you by forgetting Allah. That is to say remember Allah all the time Adding excepts from Imam Ali bin al-Hussain (AS) 5) The time of death is pre-ordained 6) Do not hesitate to spend money and life in the cause of Allah
