Stephen King’s Bag of Bones
Not to be missed this Christmas is a heart-stopping mystery chiller adapted from the award-winning, bestselling novel by master of horror Stephen King. Pierce Brosnan (two-time Golden Globe nominee and star of four ‘Bond’ movies) plays a newly widowed writer plagued by haunting nightmares and caught up in a sinister custody case in a lakeside town in western Maine. Winner of the Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel of 1998 and the British Fantasy Award in 1999, ‘Bag of Bones’ is a multi-layered story of grief and lost love, a new love haunted by past secrets, an innocent child caught in a terrible crossfire and of a battle between two spirits from the netherworld, one of them motivated by love, the other by hatred and revenge. Melissa George (‘Home and Away’, ‘Hunted’, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’), Annabeth Gish (‘The West Wing’, ‘Pretty Little Liars’, ‘Brotherhood’), Anika Noni Rose (‘Dreamgirls’, ‘The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency’), William Schallert (‘Desperate Housewives, ‘Medium’, ‘True Blood’), Jason Priestley (‘Beverly Hills, 90210’) and Caitlin Carmichael (‘True Blood’) also star. Unable to stop grieving after his wife is killed in a road accident, novelist Mike Noonan returns to the couple’s lakeside cabin in Maine where he is plagued by disturbing dreams, ghostly visitations and communiqués from beyond the grave. See page 24 for the complete synopsis.

Celebrity Wedding Planner: EastEnders Special (Series 3: 1/3)
Making a welcome return this Christmas is the popular prime-time series in which couples sign over to celebrities total control of their wedding arrangements. The past two series have seen some unusual and surprising events, often a far cry from the bride and groom’s original conception of their big day. So how will the latest three unsuspecting couples react to showbiz razzamatazz, a fusion of Ibiza glamour and vintage ‘Great Gatsby’ style, and the full Essex treatment? There is one huge catch in ‘Celebrity Wedding Planner’. The couple do not know the identity of the celebrities who will be planning their wedding until it is too late for them to back out! This is for obvious reasons, as the thought of Jedward, Denise Welch or Louie Spence arranging anyone’s wedding might make even the bravest bride run a mile! This week, two of Walford’s finest – John Partridge (aka ‘EastEnders’ Christian Clarke) and Nina Wadia (aka Zainab Masood) – plan the big day for Jade and George from Kent. The 25-year-old bride-to-be dreams of a stylish black-and-white themed wedding to 28-year-old carpenter George, but Nina and John have something rather different in mind. See page 13 for the complete synopsis.

A Very Eddie Christmas
Channel 5 gives Eddie Stobart fans a giftwrapped present – a triple bill of back-to-back seasonal specials showing the extraordinary lengths that this iconic trucking company goes to to keep the wheels turning for Christmas. Eddie Stobart’s Christmas Cracker is a brand new programme following the truckers on their drive to deliver Christmas to the nation. This is the busiest time of year for Britain's famous haulage firm. A hospital in Cambridge awaits their giant tree to raise patients’ spirits. Britain's busiest petrol forecourts are expecting a bumper fuel delivery for those facing the long drive home. A town in the north east of England is due an unusual delivery of reindeer for their annual Christmas parade… On top of all that, the drivers must hit the right note for the company’s charity Christmas single. Can the men and women in green and red come up with the goods – and can they get them there in time? There is also another chance to see last year’s special: Eddie Stobart: Trucks, Trailers and Tinsel. Half a million Christmas trees need transporting for the start of the season and 63-year-old Geordie trucker Hughie is just one of those facing the daunting task. Despite heavy snow closing the main route north, he collects 1,500 firs from the forests near Inverness, but when his truck slides across a tight bend it is touch-and-go whether he will make it back to London in one piece. Meanwhile, the Stobart chilled-foods team have to deliver six million turkeys to butchers around the UK within the space of a few days. It is a tough challenge for planning manager Dave, especially when the number of turkeys needed for the supermarkets goes through the roof, leaving him and his team struggling to find extra drivers to collect the birds. Last of the seasonal specials is Eddie Stobart: Christmas Delivery. The legendary trucks and truckers are in the thick of it, facing one of their busiest times of year as they become Santa's helpers. Battling through winter conditions to ensure that stores up and down the country get their supply of Christmas trees, salt gets delivered to the councils and supermarket shelves stay stocked with festive fare is a tough job: can the men and women behind the wheels of those famous green and red trucks pull it off? As blizzards hit the UK, the trucks need to keep rolling.

World’s Biggest Pets
For some pet-owners, big is truly beautiful. This quirky one-off documentary meets some of the world’s biggest animals romping through homes and neighbourhoods too close for comfort. These include seven-feet-tall dogs, rabbits that weigh the same as a five-year-old and the biggest pet on the planet! The journey starts in Nottingham, home to a huge dog called Mighty Finn. The world’s tallest canine, however, lives on the other side of the Atlantic. Standing at a monumental 110cm tall from paw to shoulder, Giant George is the same height as two average golden retrievers and the same weight as 35 Yorkshire terriers Giant George, however, is not in the same league as Wild Thing. Ronald from Texas has devoted his life to his pet bison, but letting an animal the same size as a small family car wander around your living room doesn’t come without challenges. Back in the UK, the programme meets reptile fanatic Nicki from Newcastle. By her last count she had 88 snakes, lizards and spiders, but her pride and joy is her pet Burmese python. Capable of eating her whole, she was recently rescued by Nicki from her previous owner who found her too big and dangerous to handle. The pitter-patter of gigantic paws sounds rather louder than usual in this fascinating insight into the amazing world of all creatures great and tall.

50 Shocking Facts about Diet and Exercise
This two-hour countdown show looks at the shocking truth behind what we eat and the often dangerous and misguided methods we adopt in order to lose weight. Scientists, industry experts and exponents explain the pros and cons of fad diets, ‘healthy’ foods and extreme exercise regimes. We all know about the benefits of exercise, good diet, looking good and living a healthy lifestyle, but most of the things that are good for us can bring side-effects that are precisely the opposite. Incontinence, infertility, infected genitalia, energydrink madness, hip replacements and even death are commonplace among the beautiful people – as are botched surgeries, extremely dangerous selfharming diets and bizarre exercise programmes. Ironically, although it might not be healthier, it is much simpler and safer to spend your days lying on the couch watching television and eating chocolate (which prevents strokes, by the way)…

Back for another season of thrills and spills is the show that follows the brave men and women who jump in the cab to transport essential supplies to some of the remotest parts of North America. The roster of drivers this season includes some old hands and some fresh faces. Lisa Kelly reports for duty in Fairbanks in the heart of Alaska, where the company Carlile has 1,500 loads that need to be shifted north up to Prudhoe on the shore of the Beaufort Sea. Her first run sees her lead a convoy of heavy haulers, some of whom need a bit of pushing and pulling to get them going in the right direction. Dave Redmon, who featured in the Himalayan season of ‘IRT: Deadliest Roads’, arrives in Fairbanks to try his hand at driving on the ice roads for the first time. However the hot-headed Alabama boy does not take orders too well and is less than happy to be placed under the watchful eye of 19-year veteran Tony Molesky. On their first run together a prolonged argument results in the two of them going their separate ways. Trucker Maya Seiber has made her way up from her native New York. Having conquered the city streets, she now wants to test herself on the ice roads. She signs in and after a road test is sent out riding shotgun with another driver. Meanwhile ‘IRT’ regulars Hugh, Rick and Alex are making their bucks in Canada. In Winnipeg, Hugh and Rick have signed up with Polar Industries who have a contract to supply the remote Cree community with essentials. The trip is over six hundred miles each way and crosses frozen swamps and includes such obstacles as a beaver dam! Alex has gone into business on his own and has a contract with First Nations Trucking to deliver groceries to Red Sucker Lake, a 700-mile trip across the country’s most hazardous roads.

A Right Royal 2012
With the diamond jubilee coinciding with the London Olympics, 2012 was always going to be a memorable year for the royal family, but it was actually a combination of unexpected elements that made 2012 a right royal year. Prince William’s wedding to Kate Middleton in 2011 rekindled the romance between the public and the British royal family. But as 2012 loomed, a more pressing crisis confronted the royals. On December 23rd, Prince Philip was airlifted to hospital suffering chest pains. Over the following 12 months the family would face the publication of embarrassing photographs, legal battles with foreign press, more illness, a rain-lashed jubilee flotilla and Harry playing strip billiards in Las Vegas. Since the death of Diana, the royal family has had 15 years to adapt to dealing with press and publicity in the modern world. How did they cope in their most important year for decades and how would this remarkable year change them? Was this the year that Charles was nudged out of the limelight to allow the Queen to bask in the glow from William and Kate? Would Harry, against all expectation, become our new favourite? Would 2012 be the crowning glory to Elizabeth II’s reign? These and many other questions are put to those who know the royal family intimately, including former MP Ann Widdecombe, Diana’s private secretary Patrick Jephson, the pageant master of the jubilee flotilla Adrian Evans, royal correspondent Robert Jobson and social historian Dominic Sandbroke.

Melissa George (‘The Slap’, ‘Hunted’, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’), Annabeth Gish (‘The West Wing’, ‘Pretty Little Liars’, ‘Brotherhood’), Anika Noni Rose (‘Dreamgirls’, ‘The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency’), William Schallert (‘Desperate Housewives, ‘Medium’, ‘True Blood’), Jason Priestley (‘Beverly Hills, 90210’) and Caitlin Carmichael (‘True Blood’) also star. Bestselling novelist Mike Noonan (Brosnan) is devastated when his wife Jo (Gish) is killed in a road accident. Unable to stop grieving and gripped by writer’s block, he is inspired by a strange dream to return to the couple’s lakeside retreat in Maine to seek answers to some troubling questions. Why had Jo spent so much time there recently, and why did she buy a pregnancy test? Mike had hidden the results of a low sperm count from her. Was she having an affair? At Dark Score Lake, Mike befriends attractive young widow Mattie Devore (Melissa George, Golden Globe nominee for ‘In Treatment’) and becomes embroiled in her battle for custody of her daughter Kyra (Carmichael) against her rich and powerful father-in-law, Max Devore (Schallert). Max cannot forgive Mattie for shooting his son when he went crazy and tried to kill Kyra.

Though Mike’s writer’s block suddenly disappears, he is plagued by disturbing dreams, ghostly visitations and communiqués from beyond the grave. For beneath the tranquil waters of Dark Score Lake lurk secrets, some of them deeper under the surface than others. A young black blues singer named Sara Tidwell (Rose) disappeared whilst playing at the local fair in 1939 and her spirit still lingers in Mike’s cabin. But as Mike becomes haunted by the many secrets at the lake, he comes to realise that his late wife still has something to tell him. ‘Bag of Bones’ was filmed in Nova Scotia and adapted by Matt Venne from the New York Times No 1 bestseller by Stephen King. The director, Mick Garris, is no stranger to the horror genre, with ‘Masters of Horror’, ‘Critters 2’ and the Channel 5 series ‘Fear Itself’ among his writing credits. He also directed the TV series of Stephen King’s ‘The Stand’. The executive producers are Mark Sennet for Mark Sennet Entertainment Inc, Mick Garris for Nice Guy Productions Inc. and Stewart Mackinnon for Headline Pictures Limited. Brian Gary and David Davoli are the co-executive producers.

The Mentalist Black Cherry (Series 5: 9/24)
The acclaimed US crime drama series continues. In this instalment, as Jane keeps on the trail of Red John, the team investigate the murder of a real estate agent with a chequered past. Patrick Jane (Simon Baker), an independent consultant with the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI), has a remarkable track record for solving serious crimes by using his razor-sharp skills of observation. Within the CBI, Jane is notorious for his blatant lack of protocol and his semi-celebrity past as a former psychic medium, whose paranormal abilities he now admits he feigned. However, Jane’s role in cracking a series of tough, high-profile cases is greatly valued. No-nonsense senior agent Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney) alternates between reluctantly acknowledging Jane’s usefulness and lambasting him for his theatrics, narcissism and dangerous penchant for crossing boundaries. Lisbon’s team includes agents Kimball Cho (Tim Kang), who serves as the lead interrogator; Wayne Rigsby (Owain Yeoman), the team's resident fire and explosives expert; and relative newcomer Grace Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti), the optimist who is often at odds with Jane's more jaded views. In this series, one of Red John’s alluring accomplices, Lorelei Martins, is in custody, meaning that the hunt for the elusive serial killer gets back on track. After assisting the CBI team with solving the state’s most serious crimes, Jane now senses that Red John is closer than ever. He may be already on the CBI’s radar. With his wits always about him, Jane ventures wherever the CBI team is summoned, but always with an eye over his shoulder. In this episode, the CBI team investigates the murder of a real estate agent with former gang ties, while Jane searches for leads on his new connection to Red John.

Acquisitions: Channel 5 Last in Series Castle Overkill; A Deadly Game (Series 2: 23-24/24)
The gripping crime drama about a novelist who shadows an NYPD detective concludes its second series this week with a double bill. Firstly, Castle takes on Denning, who is getting closer and closer to Beckett, when they have different theories about how to crack a murder case. Then the team are called in when a sophisticated spy game turns deadly. In ‘Overkill’, Alexis is casting her eye over the latest draft of her dad’s new Nikki Heat novel and she questions the introduction of a new character, a robbery detective called Schlemming, “He’s coming off a bit like a doofus,” she says, “I think you should lose him.” “If only it was this easy,” Castle replies, using a red pen to eradicate Schlemming from Nikki’s life. “Please tell me there’s been a murder otherwise I’ll have to continue writing,” Castle says in response to Beckett’s phone call. His wish is granted. In a well-appointed apartment, the body of Damian Wilder is found. Wilder is the wealthy founder of a company that sells men’s grooming products. He has been shot once, although he appears to have taken a while to die, with the perpetrator finishing him off with a blow over the head. Denning follows up one line of inquiry. Some rare and very valuable books were stolen from Wilder’s apartment and subsequently offered for sale on the internet, by a book dealer, Lukas Canby, who has a record that includes assaulting a fellow bidder when a book auction didn’t go his way. Canby becomes the prime suspect, but Castle doesn’t want Denning’s hunch to be right and comes up with a plan with Ryan and Esposito to nab the person he thinks is the murderer, “If this works. I’ll keep you guys in shave cream for a year.” Who is right – Denning or Castle? Or are they both reading from the wrong script? And which one of them shares a kiss with Beckett?

In ‘A Deadly Game’, running for his life through the park at night, a man sees a payphone and makes a call. “This is Blackbird. Identification?” says the voice on the other end. “Designate 2-2-3. I am blown. I am blown… Where is the safe house?” says the caller. “Negative 2-2-3, you know the rules,” says the voice. Tearing back through the park, he is stopped in his tracks by a man with a flashlight, who brandishes a gun with a silencer and shoots the man dead. The victim’s wallet provides no help to identify him – his gym membership is for a gym that doesn’t exist and his company, Fastwater Global Services, are registered to a PO Box in the Cayman Islands. His hire car is found to contain an automatic weapon, five thousand euros and a pen, which selfdestructs after it relays a message about the details of a meeting. “Well now we know why our victim doesn’t exist,” says Beckett, “he’s a spy.” At the meeting point specified in the pen message, after making a fool of himself with the only single woman in the joint, Castle makes contact with a Hans Brauer, who eventually cracks and tells the detectives he is just taking part in a ‘spy-cation’, in which ordinary people get to live out their James Bond-style fantasies. Who had it in for the victim? How well does Castle take the news that Beckett and Denning are ’together’? And does she agree with Castle that this should be the last case they work on?
