A PHYSICIAN AS A MANAGER
An evolution in our health-care system is shifting it from the traditional fee for service to managed care. Public concern about affordable care and rising costs are the principal drivers of this process. The process of reform, no matter what its eventual outcome, is accelerating the ascendancy of management in health care. It appears now that future health care in this country will be under the umbrella of "managed competition." What exactly is managed competition? It has been described by some as the structured or regulated competition of managed-care plans with the ultimate goal of achieving universal access to quality health care at reasonable cost. On 20 November 2012, our group, group 1 PBL had been divided into 2 groups for the interviews with the two lecturers assigned to us, whom, Prof. Dr. Haji Abdul Halim Haji Mansar and Dr. Anna Liza Casil. The main purpose of the interview is to help us in understanding the role of physician as a manager and to learn from their personal experiences and lessons throughout their life. I`m Mohammad Faiz Taqiyuddin b Mohd Nor with my other 5 group members have interviewed Dr. Anna Liza Casil as part of our task for Introduction to Patient Care (IPC) module. At first we didn`t manage to meet him as he got busy with other administrative work that he responsible with. However we manage to do an appointment with him and do the given task. As information regarding Dr. Halim, I asked my friend Chuah Wei Hong to tell me a little bit about him so that I can write it on this essay. First of all, I will briefly describe the academic study and working experience for both of them respectively. For Dr. Halim, he was from Penang. He obtained his degree at Airlangga University, Surabaya, Indonesia. He continued his master degree in Glasgow University, Scotland. Then, he did his forensic training there. He was a doctor at Hospital Kuala Lumpur and he became the professor at National University of Malaysia. He decided to enter the corporate world, which is the Allianze University College of Medical Sciences until now. In addition, he is the the Head of Forensic Institute. For Dr. Anna, she did her Bachelor of Science, Biology and Nursing at

the University of Philippines in 1998 and Saint Dominic College in 2007 respectively. But before doing her Bachelor in Nursing, she managed to obtain her Doctor of Medicine at the University of the City of Manila in 2004. She worked at the Emergency Room, E.R. at CasauI Hospital from 2006 to 2010. She was a company doctor at WNS and also an assistant professor at Trinity University of Asia. She decided to work in Allianze University College of Medical Sciences in 2011, due to few reason which will be explained later. Both of them enter the corporate world due to different reason. Dr. Halim wishes to continue his teaching life in private sector base on the experiences and knowledge he gained throughout his life. But for Dr. Anna, she wants to have more time with her family and to earn more for her future. Although medical profession is a busy work prospect, still we must fulfil our responsibility towards our family. One thing that made us wonder was how they manage to balance between his work and family. Everyone knows that a physician's life is full of works and sometimes there isn't enough time to spend with their beloved family. But according to Dr. Anna, he only spent about 6 to 8 hours for work. The rest of it is used with her beloved family. From what she said I can say that she is a fully-responsible and wise woman because she managed to divide her time properly between her family and work without mixing either one of those .Dr Anna, as been told by her, never neglected his family despite her busy duty . She kept balance between her work and family matter so that there will no later issues that might keep her regret for not doing so. Last but not least she advice us to always do the right thing and never do bad thing. That is the basic principal that she held until her become success now. Shifting to the corporate world doesnt affect much on their medical practice. This is mainly because both of them are still applying the knowledge they have learnt and they do their revision from time to time to keep them up to date. The only thing is that, purely teaching may affect their clinical skill. Hence, to maintain the skill, Dr. Halim has a clinic and according to him, he works at his clinic every weekend to maintain the clinical skill. Both of them have achieved their goal, and they will be working hard for higher achievements. Working in AUCMS, they encounter the same challenges. Firstly, they have problems in communication with their colleagues and students. This mainly due to the different nationality, races and religious among the staffs and students in AUCMS. Language barrier is the very first thing they need to overcome in order to achieve more here. Besides that, they face problems in managing their work and students. For

example, Dr. Halim put a lot of effort in convincing the financial department to establish a new laboratory for scientific research. On the other hand, Dr. Anna needs to manage the student intake in AUCMS. In maintaining a balance between work and family, they think that when we are working, we need to pay full attention on it. We need to try our best in anything that we do in order to succeed. But, after the working time, we need enjoy the rest of our time with things that we like. For Dr. Anna, she will spend her time mainly with her family and sometime her friends. Whilst for Dr. Halim, he likes to do sports and play games to relax him. Keep yourself fit! he told us. He wants us to help others with open heart. Then he believes that one day, one will help you when you really need it. From the interview, I have summed to a few important lessons that I need to know in order to become a successful doctor. A physician is a professional who practices medicine, which is concerned with promoting, maintaining or restoring human health through the study, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, injury and other physical and mental impairments. They may focus their practice on certain disease categories, types of patients, or methods of treatment known as specialist medical practitioners or assume responsibility for the provision of continuing and comprehensive medical care to individuals, families, and communities known as general practitioners. Medical practice properly requires both a detailed knowledge of the academic disciplines (such as anatomy and physiology) underlying diseases and their treatment the science of medicine and also a decent competence in its applied practice the art or craft of medicine. In modern English, the term physician is used in two main ways, with relatively broad and narrow meanings respectively. Some commentators have argued that physicians have duties to serve as role models for the general public in matters of health, for example by not smoking cigarettes. Indeed, in most western nations relatively few physicians smoke, and their professional knowledge does appear to have a beneficial effect on their health and lifestyle. According to a study of male physicians, life expectancy is slightly higher for physicians (73.0 years for white and 68.7 for black) than lawyers or many other highly educated professionals. Both the role of the physician and the meaning of the word itself vary around the world, including a wide variety of qualifications and degrees, but there are some common elements. For example, the ethics of medicine require that physicians show consideration, compassion and benevolence for

their patients. Before we end our interview session, she gave us a lot of useful advices for us to continue our ambition of becoming a great doctor in the near future. According to her, we want to become a doctor because of our love towards the medical field, not by the influences of other people. She advised us not to think so much about unimportant stuffs, such as family problems or money matter. She also said that we must set up our own goals in order to achieve something that we want the most in our life. Give up is not the exact solution in order to solve the problems we faced. I have learnt some good values and lessons from both of them. Frankly speaking, I think that being a successful doctor, we need a lot of scarifying and determination. As you said, Doctors have married to their profession. I will work hard in whatever way I can to achieve my goal. Once again, I would like to thank both of the doctors for their time.
