The role the youth is supposed to play in our quest for greater national develop ment has been
and continues to be a topic of discussion in as much as generation s of youth take up the realms of adulthood and others follow in their footsteps. As a theme of several youth organized programmes, one always sits to hear the sa me old stories repeated –definitions upon definitions, quotes from some unknown ol d fellows and comparisons with developed nations. Indeed it is encouraging however that such brainstorming be done by the party co ncerned-the youth We will therefore try to give a “youth-like approach” to this reasoning of national development. We could begin by equating national development to nothing but Generational Cons cious Thinking. That is to say being and acting consciously at the present vis- àvis people of the next generation. The succeeding generations here should be the individual who comes right after o ne, in line with the usage of a service, good etc. The fact that we live in a democratic country today is as a result of the consci ous effort of our forebears to better their conditions then, whiles projecting f or us. They thought generationally. We could very well have been living in a developed nation if our forefathers had made a conscious effort of bettering their lot whiles factoring that of ours in to the equation. We are therefore compelled to pick up the reins and whip the ho rse so hard to catch up. It is that simple for us. You use the WC and leave it in a worthy state for the next user, you do likewise for other spaces you use and we are sure to reduce th e need for janitors. You use a school desk whiles thinking of your younger siste r coming after you. It is worth noting that generational thinking is akin to thinking “in –chain” just lik e a production line for a good. Part is produced at one unit and pushed to the n ext for additions up until the final product. After all, even though good things or situations may be mostly subjective, some can be generalized. Come to think of it, you walk into a bathhouse only to find that a “good fellow” has littered the sink with faeces, intuitively most people start cursing; Which idiot could have done this? That’s so stupid on his part etc……. The good books warn us to be weary of the power of the tongue!!! You don’t want any curses trailing behind you? Think of the next person coming aft er you. Thinking likewise we are sure to encourage durability, sustainability, reduction in waste, and a halt to the suicide we are causing ourselves today. As a result of the extreme use of natural resources (which take billions of years to form), for the manufacture of goods (which have a short life span) we tend to put the life and livelihood of future generations at risk. Is this the national developm ent we seek? Seeking national development, indifference is a fatal path to take. That is why recent developments in the Arab world are of a great example. We have sat so lon g staring up at the Papa figure to do something which he never does. Oppressed b y underdevelopment for so long, we will have to act now, that generations, who w ill come walking proudly over our tombstones, will cause us to slumber deeply an d not roll; that we have accomplished great things. Indeed I will tell of this generation; As that when the oppressed stood against the oppressor in broad daylight As that when a colored occupied the white house in universal delight As that which saw mankind connected like never before As that which saw the world come to Africa As that which saw the world shrink on itself Indeed I will speak of a generation When man killed his brother When nation rose against another When material wealth equaled respect When the poor died poor
.And the rich died rich When nature begun to speak out Indeed I will recount of great times good and bad.
