Unit Plan Overall Idea Matrix

Topic Inferences and Interpretations Target Audience (make sure to describe number, age, and abilities of students) This will be made for a fourth grade class of 25 students and a general education classroom. There will be three students with disabilities which include one student with ADHD, one student with a learning disability, and one student with a hearing impairment. We will provide accommodations for these students by giving more time as needed, seating arrangements, and modified assessments. Overall Objectives 1. Given a fictional text the students will be able to correctly draw at least one conclusion and make at least one interpretation based on what they have read (or heard). 2. Based on what is happening in a short story, the student will be able to draw at least one conclusion about a character’s qualities and actions and back it up with one or more examples as evidence. 3. Given parts of a story, the student will be able to put the story together in the correct order of events based on their inferences of what should be happening based on what just happened and will make at least one creative response to make an appropriate ending. 4. Given an example and instruction on inferring, students will be able to create a 30-60 second imovie that illustrates the understanding of inferences by including clues that when combined with background knowledge conveys a specific outcome. 5. After listening to a podast, the students will be able to make at least one plausible prediction about what will happen next and back it up with evidence (clues) from the story.

Lesson Topic Introduction What Students Will Do Listen and watch an iMovie presentation about inferences and interpretations. They will also make their own iMovie based on the example we produced (with teacher guidance) They will have to puzzle together parts of the story and make up an ending based on plot and characters.
