Elizabeth walks over to the table a bible clutched in one hand, her hair is visibly stressed, her eyes

staring faunally out of the window. She stands very weak but very defiant of her surroundings and her eyes never once meet Daniel on his desk. She steps up to the desk with no care for the person sitting at it. (A SILENCE.) ELIZABETH You used to be able to see the rapeseed for miles just staring out this window. (DANIEL turns looking at ELIZABETH with gaze of shock) DANIEL Oh! Elizabeth I am terribly sorry-I was just working late- I am sorry to have woke yoELIZABETH Oh do not worry, I do not sleep much these day anyhow. Too many thoughts bubbling in my head, if I don’t sit up and walk about the house I fell they may overcome me. Also gives me a chance to tidy the house without Richard messing it up again five seconds later. (Small laugh) (DANIEL takes a breath to speak but ELIZABETH stops him. She smiles with grace.) ELIZABETH I don’t need your pity, we never going to get our old life back, I know that now. It’s what wrestles me awake every night for goodness sake. I have prayed for her every night since you know, I feel that God is really the only thing I can turn to at a time like this, he will always listen to my wishes, my wishes that my child can come home. I know there is talk of you scholarly men saying that the lord doesn’t exist, I never believe a man when he says that he has absolutely abandoned god, for I believe there is a small part that still exists in the mind that god inhabits, and in the face of true adversity man can only turn to God, for he is the only hope to man sometimes. Often late at night while I read my daily passage I think of God not as a thing but an idea, that makes us love one another, teaches us that good actions are rewarded and gives us hope when all is lost. God can save anyone if they just follow this idea. He can save you Mr. Worthy. (BEAT.)

2. ELIZABETH This, fell out of your pocket at the dinner table. (A SILENCE) DANIEL That was-wel- I didn’t want you to think I has taken her- it’s quite a bit of evidence isn’t it. ELIZABETH Yes it is. (ELIZABETH keeps her head strained on a point far out of the window her lips are now pursed, she is clearly angry, but passively so.) DANIEL I don’t want you to thinELIZABETH Of course not. DANIEL It’s quite incrimELIZABETH It certainly is. DANIEL I mean I am clearly not a man to do such aELIZABETH I should hope not. DANIEL Right...Well...Ok...I am sorry to have woke you...I feel it is time for me to retire for the night. Daniel starts to walk away Elizabeth turns to him and fighting through her tears ELIZABETH I know you would never tell me and I know not your reasons if you have done anything...But...If. She. Is. Still. Alive...I just want her back. DANIEL (getting angry) I have already told you I had nothing to do with it?!

3. Elizabeth turns back to the window and starts to cry her body convulses. She burst out ELIZABETH DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS LIKE TO LOSE A, CHILD! Hmm IT BURNS YOU. EVERY SECOND OF EVERY DAY IT BURNS YOU! I KISSED MY CHILD AWAKE EVERY DAY FOR 12 YEARS IN THAT BED, NOW THERE IS ONLY DUST! EVERY TABLE I LAY FOR TEA I EXPECT HER TO WALK RIGHT THROUGH THAT DOOR! She would smile at me, in a such a way, a way like she was safe in my arms, she was complete in my arms. Everytime I think of that smile, I feel I have let. Her. Down...I will never accept that she is dead, even if I hold that dead child in my arms, I will never think she is dead. I will search that moor till I am grey and crooked, till I can no longer breath that thick air...I will search for that smile Mr. Worthy, and I will find it. During this monologue Richard had been listening at the staring through the door. Getting more and more concerned. RICHARD Elizabeth. ELIZABETH (still in a fit of tears, at the voice she attempts to regain herself) Hmm? RICHARD Do you not think it was time you went to bed? ELIZABETH What? I am not your, child, Richard, you may not just send me to bed whenever you want?! You don’t even care do you?! Elizabeth squares up to Richard who looks shocked but immensely angry and just stares in her eyes. Her lifts his hand slowly in the silence and brings it down on her face with a big gust of force. Elizabeth freezes her hand clutching her cheek just staring over his shoulder. Richard pulls her hand away and strikes her again. The whole scene is tense and awkward with Daniel watching out of the door frame. Richard gestures to the bedroom and Elizabeth runs clutching her cheek. Richard steps into Daniels room.

4. RICHARD I am very sorry for disturbing you at the hour Sir, but I would very much enjoy the pleasure of mans company the house being...used to being so full of women. Richard beckons towards the table, he sits down and promptly stands up with a sudden idea, RICHARD Ah! I have a bottle of Scotch that I haven’t had chance to open yet. It’s a nice bottler too, come all the way from Aberdeen it has! I just better go feDANIEL Oh I am not worth the hassleRICHARD Nonsense, my father said never turn down good whiskey and I think you should follow that piece of advice personally. I won’t be a moment. DANIEL Do you want me to come with you. RICHARD (looking scared) No... I-I mean it’s cold-dark it’s not really a place meant for people. Daniel looks weirdly at Richard who exist stage left down the stairs to the basement. Elizabeth creeps on from the back of the stage bible in one hand crucifix in the other. She is dressed for cold weather. She creeps but spots Daniel sitting near the table. They both exchange a look. No words are uttered. RICHARD (offstage) I wont be a moment! Elizabeth looks at Daniel desperately, Daniel nods his head Elizabeth looks relieved and runs off the stage right to the courtyard and out into the moor. Richard appears whiskey in hand and lays both on the table and pours. Both men sit in silent for a moment enjoying the fine Whiskey, the way only two men can. DANIEL Do you know what?

5. RICHARD What/ DANIEL I have tasted what seems like barrels of Whiskey and Scotch, some Bourbon as-well. I do have to say this really rate against them. RICHARD Really?! DANIEL Yes! I wouldn’t say it if I were lying. RICHARD Oh well if a man of your stature likes it then it must be good....To good whiskey! DANIEL To good whiskey! Both men chink glasses as a sign of a toast. Richard brings his glass down to eye level and observe it intently. RICHARD These glasses aren’t clean. What is that bloody woman playing at?! Least a man can do is ask for clean glasses in this place! Elizabeth! ELIZABETH! Richard has, in course, stood up and started making his way, shouting his wife, to the stairs. RICHARD Damn woman must have fallen asleep. Richard exits stage left. Daniel swills his whiskey around takes one last sip and with a look of disgust decants his glass into Richards. Richard returns a look of shock and anger upon his face. RICHARD She gone. She’s bloody gone, at this hour, on the moor. DANIEL Are you sure she hasn’t gone for just a walk say? Richard looks at Daniel in disgust. RICHARD (putting on a coat and finding his hunting rifle)

6. My friend, we don’t not live in a house where my wife just goes for walks any time she pleases. She does not understand that we are not going to find her, in, this, fog. Stupid woman! DANIEL Would you like me to come with? RICHARD No I will be fine than- Wait a second she must have left by that door, no? Well then didn’t you see her. Daniels looks stumped. RICHARD Why did you not tell me she has gone?! Do you realize you could have just let her go to her death. DANIEL What death? It’s just a moor. Both men standing at this point. RICHARD There is something out there, something in the fog, looking. DANIEL Looking for what? RICHARD Emily. Richard is scared but calm. While Daniel has a look of horror upon his face. DANIEL What?! RICHARD It’s been searching for days now. Richard goes to leave. DANIEL Wait a second it? RICHARD Yes.

7. DANIEL It’s not human? RICHARD No. DANIEL Are you sure? RICHARD ...Very. Richard looks sternly at Daniel and then continues his journey into the night. DANIEL 23 November 1863, I had been left alone all in that house. It certainly was an eerie place almost as if the house was living and breathing with the wind. Well there was something living in it anyway. I always thought I heard noises coming from distant rooms. I imagine things moving in the darkness just to the corners of my eyes. Things watching me from the inky black, things waiting for me to go to sleep. In-fact while I was busy at work at on one of my papers, I could have sworn I heard a Childs sobs, but not from the distance of the moor but from the woodwork of the house. I decided to walk back to the dining hall, as it was the room I was most accustomed with and has a hearty glow of moon that would shine if my candle were to flicker out. So I continued my work, under the glow of that moon, that recklessly shone it’s light upon this already frail house. But while I worked, I had the knowledge that something was in the house with me, some presence behind closed doors that had lived here for many years. Something alive, but at the same time not human. I lifted my head from my work and fixed my eyes on the horizon, the fog clouded everything from sight all I could see was the great swirling mass that brought me here. Then suddenly across the barren landscape past the grand gates of this house came a monstrous wail of something inhuman, screaming into the night. Then I heard the gate creak open and footsteps shuffle across the courtyard. Elizabeth walks in drench in rain and hair in frankly a mess. Her eyes are wide she walks very slowly and does not say a word. DANIEL Are you OK? Nothing. DANIEL Would you perhaps like to sit down? Nothing. Daniel traces her to a seat and she takes it staring out the audience.

8. DANIEL I had some tea brewing, Would you like some? Nothing. Daniel goes to get the tea. Elizabeth is still staring. He returns pours the drinks and they both sit in silence her tea untouched. Daniel looking at his work. Then out of the silence Elizabeth remarks. ELIZABETH I saw it. DANIEL What? Daniel looks shocked. Elizabeth stays the same. ELIZABETH It. I saw it. I feel over in the moor got lost. I looked up off the ground and this figure was standing over me. I was out there cold and alone and this thing stared directly into my eyes Richard, it stared into my SOUL! She grabs Daniels hand, forcing her nails into him, he winces, she just keeps staring getting louder and faster. DANIEL What did it look like? ELIZABETH Fur...Spit, stench, sick, human hands, with, with talons, sharp full of blood, death, hooves, horns, twisted arms, limbs everywhere tongue licking the air, the eyes, the eyes, EYES EYES EYES EYES EYES looking at me EYES EYES EYES RICHARD! HELP ME PLEASE I’M ALL ALONE, MY BABY BACK PLEASE GIVE ME MY BABY BACK. Elizabeth falls into her lap her whole body shaking. A teddy bear falls from her arms. Daniel toys with the idea of consoling Elizabeth but instead goes around to get the bear. He picks it up and Elizabeth rises and looks at him. ELIZABETH It gave me that. DANIEL Where is it from?

9. ELIZABETH Emily’s room. DANIEL So it’s been missing. ELIZABETH No. It been by my bedside table since she left. It was there when I left tonight....It’s been in the house Mr. Worthy. It’s been in the house The gate crashes open and Richard yells out in pain. RICHARD Bloody Hell!!
