Jonathan Francois Douglas O’Haly
“We must continue on unhindered, unfettered, this is unfucking unpossible!” “But sir!”, he stammered, then suddenly interrupted again, as he often was. “Pain is the name of the game I guess.” screamed the captain above the almost deafening noise of the explosions that continued to rattle their vessel’s exterior. The armour would hold for now but not if they continued. The self repairing robots that made up the ship’s machinery would have everything under control shortly. What they had not counted on was this, a trap, in the middle of nowhere, in outer space, on a mission that absolutely no one knew about. Maybe it was coincidence. What were the odds of that, she thought, as the two men who were the only two other humans aboard their ship continued to bicker on about the reality of what they now faced. Maybe one of them was a traitor. Obviously that’s the destination that the infallible train of logic would veer it’s ugly head into eventually, she quickly realized, wishing she wasn’t here, wishing she was anywhere, wishing she was back home in bed with her girlfriend Kateryna, hiding under the covers, trying to keep warm while the eternal snow ravaged the icy plains of their lifeless planet. Elsewhere other minds pondered the same situation. There are much bigger and more intelligent things than the human ego, believe it or not. We see what we’re ready to, and we only see what we are capable of, things outside of our limited ability to sense, to communicate, and to feel can not and will not exist. How much human energy for instance is spent trying to communicate and reason with chickens or any other barnyard animal? Why would any higher power or evolved life form care about what humans think? Whether they can see the big picture or not? Human beings are just pawns on
the great chessboard sent out to die and be slaughtered by their own inconsistencies. Human beings are non entities. Except when they inadvertently pry into something they shouldn’t have. Then they need to be reprimanded. Gently turned around. --------
She emerged from the shower, her body dripping wet, her hands running along her beautiful body exploring every curve and crevice, cupping her breasts with her hands feeling the electricity awaken her senses and then she stopped. There were good things about being stuck out in space. She had a lot of time to work out and exercise. She just wished she could share it all with the woman she left behind leaving her only with a short note that would undoubtedly break her heart forever. Thoughts of her lover that burned in her brain eternally making it almost impossible to concentrate on the bigger things in life. It had been exactly one week since the attack, if you could call it that..The tension on board had been driving her absolutely mental. She had a copy of Kateryna programmed in her personal computer and she dove into it now for the first time. She needed this she knew and she orgasmed over and over and over again. The captain looked over at Ralph the crazy genius that he was and asked again for the eighth or ninth time something like, “OK what?” Ralph replied calmly, as he always did, realizing that he would have to explain the reality of it all in a more mundane manner, “Well we’re being followed by aliens. For some reason we were entering or getting close to something, too close, that they didn’t want us to see.” The captain looked intently at Ralph wondering why Ralph thought of him as some sort of simpleton. Did he not almost single handedly build the known universe’s most awesome mid size space explorer? Did he not raise the trillions of dollars that was needed to fund this mission by successfully exploiting the wants and desires of the common man and woman? God, did he not find Ralph as a young struggling student and give him the encouragement that would lead Ralph to unprecedented stature amongst their planet’s intellectual community? He felt a little demoralized. He screamed as loudly as he could, his voice hoarse from screaming so much during the past week, “Yes I know you’re talking about aliens but come on man we stopped believing in aliens after we first migrated out of our solar system some 3000 god damned years ago, next
you’re going to tell me that god himself is caught up in this all as well!!!!” Sometimes it’s not the evidence that leads us to our most logical conclusions but the lack of it. Maybe the insight that Ralph brought forth that day was meant to be, in the grand scheme of things, or maybe it wasn’t and was just pure coincidence. Either way anything worked out, this was the moment that changed everything, forever. The watchers in charge of limiting humanity’s progress were not listening in to the conversation between Ralph and the captain in the same way you’re not monitoring your farm animals wondering if they are finally planning a revolt. -------
Part Two: The So Called Anomaly
Ralph paced around his cabin lost in thought. He knew that they were being followed by a seemingly undetectable flying object. ‘Unidentified flying object’, he reminded himself, ‘UFOs’, as they were once called. Something from Earth’s ancient history. Ralph wondered why most people just assumed that aliens did not exist, there were way too many things that could only be explained by their existence. People like Ralph and Ralph didn’t go around talking about it all because, yes, people like Ralph, were in this advanced age where humans now inhabited dozens of known worlds, considered completely crazy. And Ralph with his relatively high stature within the academic universe would not see his star continue it’s meteoric rise into the upper stratosphere of scientific fame and fortune if people knew that he had lost his marbles somehow and started to believe in the existence of little green men who maybe make toys for santa claus in their spare time as well. Ralph was quickly running out of ideas as to how to actually detect these beings who were obviously intent on preventing the success of their so called mission. He was fairly excited at first after hitting on the idea but after a couple of days all of that had completely subsided and now he was starting to dwell more on regretting saying anything to the captain who had been known to turn on colleagues and friends in the past. What they obviously needed was some sort of a trap. The ship that was following them had the means to make itself invisible to all of the tests that he could devise to be somehow relevant. The captain was being less than useful and had spent a considerable amount of time trying to dissuade Ralph from working on detecting the alien vessel. Luckily Ralph had agreed to join this seemingly ill fated mission under the assumption that everyone on board were equal partners. However with the captain
having tended to act like an insane megalomaniac this seemed to skewer the balance of power sleighty. Oksana was now locked in her room 24 hours a day and the captain was convinced that they must make another attempt at entering the anomaly. The third attempt, after now being attacked twice. Oksana would be of some assistance of course with her experience in particle engineering amongst other things. Unfortunately she hadn’t taken kindly to Ralph’s offer to sleep with her to help her release some of the stress that she was feeling after being accused by Viktor, the captain, he demanded that they call him captain, of being a traitor amongst other things. After a few, a few too many, drinks, Ralph hit upon what he thought must be the greatest idea of his short, miserable life, after knocking on Oksana’s door a couple of times, to get screamed at on both occasions. One of them must leave the ship and enter the so called anomaly. Of course no one had any idea what the anomaly was exactly. It was like a mini black hole almost, filled with rare and precious metals detectable only from their planet New Kiev located at the very outer edge of humanity’s migratory march out into the great unknown. And Ralph, also, knew that he was the only one who had devised the mathematic (unpublished) equations that led to it’s detection in the first place. He also trusted both Viktor (the captain) and Oksana and didn’t think that either of them had betrayed the mission. (And even if they had, who had the capability to stop them like this? Dunh.) Ralph came to the conclusion that the anomaly was some sort of a portal into some new universe, another dimension, and he bravely decided that he would enter it, maybe even winning Oksana’s heart somehow in the process. He wouldn’t make her break up with her super sexy girlfriend Kateryna. He would be alright with everything, he wished she could understand how special it would be, he thought of the three of them as being some sort of specially ordained soulmates brought into this world to be together by whatever forces of divinity that were in charge of such events. Love aliens maybe. The more he drank the more everything made sense until he passed out with bright stars in his young passionate eyes. -------
Part 3 - The Captain
The captain was a little less than fully convinced. A portal into another dimension? He secretly didn't really want to lose Ralph. Ralph was and would be in the future of course a massive source of income for him and his corporate empire. The plan that Ralph had
proposed involved them getting their ship as close as it could to the portal then sending Ralph shooting out the escape pod at high speed fully engulfed in the mini force field that Oksana had engineered which would hopefully last long enough for Ralph to get thru to the other side. If there was an other side. And if there was, then what? Late into the night Viktor the captain sat next to his faux fireplace thinking things over and over again in between taking time outs to watch video of Oksana via the secret cameras he had placed in her room. Maybe if Ralph was gone Oksana would let her guard down a little, her feeling, probably correctly that Ralph would be a blabber mouth if they shared any time together. He didn't know for sure if Oksana did want to spend any quality time with him but he was pretty irresistible, he thought, and he was one hundred and then some percent sure that this was indeed the case. He usually only spent time with escorts but only because it was just easier that way, and better. He was nearing fifty and was starting to think that he was ready to maybe allow a soulmate into his life. Maybe two even. He wished he could disprove the alien theory, dispel it and send it fleeing out of Ralph's mind forever. Ralph was like a son to him. Albeit a frequently bothersome one. That there were forces, probably singular, that were committed to trying to stop them, well that was an unquestionable fact. The thing that Ralph didn't get was that he, having never ventured off of new Kiev, did not fully grasp the full extent of humanities present existence. There were a lot of unknowns, there were whole star systems that were completely cut off from each other like huge floating ancient Chinese empires for example. The captain thought that the anomaly was probably some sort of huge treasure, maybe war, chest that was being, going to be used, by one of these rogue alliances or empires of worlds. That it was all happening out in the remote wilderness that New Kiev occupied was even more unsettling. Maybe this was an opportunity of sorts. If anyone fired at Ralph they could easily detect the source of the attack and fire back maybe catching their enemies off guard. To go back to New Kiev and get more ships was completely out of the question because the captain wanted all of this wealth to himself without involving the quasi communist leaders of his planet and their distorted ideas about justice and equality. How about equality to do what you want he thought. There was really no other alternative in the end. The amount of wealth that the anomaly contained, according to Ralph’s calculations, would buy a hundred planets. Then how many soul mates would he have? Hundreds potentially (a harem? it could work contrary to public belief). The problem he decided with New Kiev was the distorted morals that were promoted making someone successful like himself somehow undesirable to
beautiful women. Losing Ralph was a necessary risk. Ralph wasn't really that smart. Especially without him coaching him along guiding him pointing him this way and that, holding his hand even. He would miss him, of course, the captain had a huge heart as he constantly reminded himself and he shed a few tears thinking about just how caring and vulnerable he really was. -------
Part 4 - Ralph
The ship, if you could still call it, a ship, had somehow successfully, almost, maneuvered itself within range of the so called anomaly. It was at this point of course more a floating pile of junk, barely holding itself together wobbling thru space slowly, relatively, than anything which would visually, at first glance, strike you as a spaceship. Albeit maybe the most advanced spaceship in the known (human?) universe. Hostile fire had been raining down on the ship for 24 minutes now, the self repairing machinery on board losing it’s grasp on the whole situation more and more so with every passing millisecond. They were all so close to annihilation and oblivion. Oksana sat in her engineer’s chair wired in wirelessly to the ship’s computers, totally in tune with the ship’s brain, connected as she was thru the organic computer that was surgically inoculated along her spine specifically to, amongst other things, operate in a situation like this with total mindfulness. She had, as she had the other two times they approached the anomaly, been trying to find the source of the shots that continued to bombard their, somewhat over engineered and ridiculously looking, her opinion, mid sized space explorer. Unfortunately, for Ralph especially, she could not discern any pattern at all that would lead her to be able to detect their attacker’s whereabouts. Their hope, of course, was that their enemies would, acting in haste as Ralph raced thru the anomaly, leave themselves uncloaked for a small sliver of time. Ralph sat in the escape pod retracing and running thru everything that had happened recently. He wasn’t entirely convinced that what he was going to be attempting was entirely sane but having introduced the plan, the Captain after at first dismissing it, changed his mind somewhat abruptly and then became a huge advocate of it. “There was no other way”, as the Captain kept saying gravely over and over again. And then all of a sudden it was time. The siren went, the escape hatch opened, and out shot the small vessel that contained Ralph. He would be thru the anomaly, stargate maybe, hopefully, in about twenty seconds. Ralph yelled into his comm as he hurtled headfirst thru space, “I love you Oksana!!!”
Oksana watched Ralph burst out of the ship, barely registering what he just yelled into the ship’s comm, waiting patiently, poised, almost timelessly know, a million calculations running thru her head, processing every movement, every fluctuation thru the ship’s monitors, looking out into the blackness of space and then she saw it. Virtually instantaneously she sent two shots out into the great universe. The first shot hit the alien vessel shorting out it’s electrical systems, paralyzing it, and the second shot grazing off the escape pod making it veer off course temporarily causing the laser torpedo sent by the enemy ship to glide by harmlessly. Smug as a bug, the Captain, who had always taken risks in life, screamed, “Woo Hoo!”, as loud as he could. He looked over at Oksana, but she was still lost in the ship’s mind, more of a computer herself than a human right now. The Captain looked back at the tele screen just as Ralph reached the anomaly. The escape pod froze at the entrance to the anomaly, which was just a huge black circle with a radius of about 40 metres. Ralph was somehow just stuck floating there for what seemed like an hour, but was only really about 3 or 4 minutes. Then KABOOM! his ship tore apart, the debris radiating out in slow motion, Ralph’s physical remains splattered on the sad canvas of nothingness that outer space is. ------
Part 5 - Oskar
He held Oksana’s slender hand tightly, almost too tightly. They were finally together. Her contractual agreement, to remain as the Captain’s wife for fifteen years, the maximum allowable by law, had finally ended. When he first disappeared thru the great anomaly he would of never of thought that Oksana would ever marry Viktor, the so called Captain. He was so old and he was such a control freak. He still didn’t get it all. Oksana was the perfect woman. Before she had finally found him she was even pondering renewing her wedding contract. He didn’t get it at all. Maybe he should have thought about it more but instead he just buried it somewhere deep inside the back of his mind. Oksana ran across the snowy tundra her beautiful brown hair blowing in the wind. She ran into his arms and he thrust her up into the air. They were so happy. He spun her around again and again until he was too dizzy to stand and they fell into the snow, holding each other, laughing their heads off.
Ralph jolted awake. He felt weird. The first thing he thought was, “Wow. It worked. I actually did it.”, not quite as enthused as maybe most people would be after inventing real reincarnation and surviving certain death at the hands of the god damned anomaly. He stumbled around the man cave that was his home, literally stumbling, because there were things laying on the floor everywhere. He was on his knees, his legs feeling wobbly, he pulled himself up and looked into the mirror that sat on top of his dresser. He had forgotten and for quite a few seconds he just stared at himself in disbelief. He had cloned a body to transport his consciousness back into the world but he didn’t clone his own. Gone was Ralph the gangily, acne faced, young man, who was actually 22 but looked perpetually 15, hopelessly skinny, not good looking, awkward, man child. He took off his shirt and flexed his muscles. He wasn’t huge but he was a fit looking guy. He had like a star quarterback, or star soccer player maybe, look going on. Ralph didn’t like guys but he admired himself for awhile knowing that women, read Oksana, would find him incredibly good looking. Incredibly so. If you could see Ralph your first thought would be that he actually completely overdid it. Then out of nowhere something magical happened, as if a magical light bulb conjured out of a magical genie’s lamp went off in his head, ping. He knew how to enter the anomaly. He didn’t know how he knew. But he knew he had to go there as quickly as he could. Before it all got handled by the wrong hands. Like the Captain, or even someone worse. He spent the night conjuring up a new ID on his computer finally hitting upon the name, Oskar. -------
Part 6 - Alien
The mighty cursor of fate hung upon the empty screen of life and stood there blinking. Blink, blink, blink, blink. Sometimes things that should never happen happen and other times things that should happen don’t. The great writer paused for another few moments his mighty heart swelling up with ink. Even he really had to stay on script. There was only one path that fate would take and he was only recording it albeit moments before things actually happened. And with that in mind. Oksana, the brilliant engineer whose radiant eyes could capture and imprison any man’s heart in their icy embrace, and Viktor, the mighty Captain, the man who was the wealthiest person on his planet rising up from humble origins as a homeless orphan, became the first humans to maybe ever enter an alien vessel. The first humans to ever capture an alien vessel indeed.
They found a door of sorts on the outside of the alien ship and after fumbling around for a little while, the Captain found a palm sized indent that he placed his hand in but nothing happened. The beautiful Oksana without even really meaning to placed her hand in the same spot, almost as an afterthought, and then jumped back, shocked, as the door zipped open silently. They cautiously entered, fearing an attack. It was pitch black inside. The door closed behind them as soon as they entered. The captain turned on his flashlight but no light was emitted from it. A deep feeling of fear began to creep into their bones. All of a sudden a flicker of light emerged from a ways away off in the distance. Then another and another until light was everywhere without a shadow in sight. Everything they could see looked strangely human although extremely advanced. The chairs, the keyboards at the computer terminals, the palm marks that were everywhere, identical to the one on the door outside, human sized, with five fingers. They dared not speak to one another. Or touch anything. Oksana looked around timidly feeling that just looking at anything was sacrilegious and expected the physical environment itself to start raining down it’s mighty hellfire upon them at any moment. Finally the Captain spoke out loud, “It would seem that whoever or whatever manned this spacecraft is now long gone”. Just then a young man entered the control room from behind them. They heard a zlipping sound and they both turned around abruptly guns drawn ready to fire on whoever or whatever it was. The young man spoke in a calm and self assured tone, “This ship will not allow any violence within it’s caring womb. It is as alive as you and me are. Anything you try will have not the desired effect but will just alienate you from it’s heart.” “You’re human!” stammered the normally extremely confident Captain. “Not exactly”, replied the young man, “I am 4,685 years old for example, and I am still young by our standards.” Oksana and Viktor could only stare at this luminous human like creature, a million questions burning bright in their eyes. He looked into both of their eyes for a mere moment of eternal understanding and empathy and then continued, “Your race was bio engineered because our tribe had split into two during the years of the great war and the losers of that war fled our galaxy, running for centuries until they finally chanced upon your Earth. Depleted and few in numbers they created humans to mine your fertile world so they could refuel and recuperate. They even briefly thought to stay amongst
you forever until they were discovered, the victors of the great war not satisfied with anything but the complete destruction of the naysayers as they were called. Another great war was fought in your skies and as a result ice engulfed the Earth and all of the technology that was granted you disappeared, either buried deep below the Earth’s surface or actively destroyed by the victors as the naysayers fled out once more. Your planet was used briefly as an outpost to search them out from until it was realized that the naysayers had truly escaped for good. You are like us in every way except for one glaring omission. You lack the technology to access the secrets that are embedded within your own DNA. See I will live a long time and then when I do finally die my DNA will be embedded in a new body. All of the information that we have acquired thru the millenia is contained here in my genetic code and I can access it all at any time. Some of us, the Watchers, are watching you everywhere you go waiting for you to make the great breakthrough, if you ever will.” Bravely Oksana spoke up, “And then what?”. A sentiment that mirrored the Captain’s own train of thought. “Well.” replied the young man, “I don’t really know. It maybe hasn’t even been decided yet. It depends on a lot of different variables perhaps. How you bow down to our superior guidance? Your willingness to work with the great plan. I can tell you that this anomaly as you call it is the first evidence we have seen of the Naysayers in some 10,000 years. I have not contacted my superiors yet hoping to find more evidence sick of endlessly watching your trivial race die with no real hope or clue in your vain little hearts. Believe it or not there are more important things I thought that I could be doing. Until now. My ship is sick and will die if you do not help me. I know that if you perish, you have programmed your vessel to fire upon mine and destroy it. I am asking the two of you to form an alliance with myself. I can guarantee that you will be rewarded things that no human being could ever hope to acquire.” The Captain looked at the alien, then looked at Oksana, they all wordlessly traded their thoughts, and it was decided. ---------
Part 7 - Engineers
Oskar (Ralph) blasted off of New Kiev coming to the sudden realization that he had not cloned another body to transport into if he should die again. He wondered about the brain power of his latest incarnation. He obviously hadn’t really thought everything thru in the first place thinking more about finally finding a girlfriend, Oksana, as well as
generally not thinking that it would all actually work on top of not thinking that he would die in the first place on what was supposed to be a somewhat simple mining mission albeit an almost impossibly rewarding one. He had been hearing faint voices in his head lately and had made the decision that he would do a better job on choosing his next clone starting to think that brains and looks were somehow two things that could not coexist in the same space. He had been playing a lot of brain games lately hoping to increase his mental capabilities and he had seen some (little) improvement. All in all he was still a brilliant genius. Maybe the voices had something to do with the anomaly? Who knew? It had only been a day since he awoke. He did own his own spaceship. He was relatively well off and he had built his own solo fighter, anyone could, plans were easily downloadable and if you owned a particle compiler you could easily manufacture all of the parts you needed, if you could afford the dark matter or you could buy or order new and used parts. It was all actually rather simple. Ralph was a fanboy of sorts and he, of course, had designed his own vessel and thousands of people had downloaded his plans and watched videos of him planning and assembling it. It was pretty awesome. It would fly circles around the Captain’s oversized pile of junk which was like an over armoured tank clankering it’s way through outer space inching along like a giant snow worm. Oksana would fire him out of the sky fairly quickly and he sort of wished that he was an engineer now but he knew even the most brilliantly gifted people needed years of jedi like training to even be considered beginners at engineering. Oksana although only 26 was probably already the greatest engineer of her generation, at least she was the three time reigning world champ in the engineering simulation tournament that was held every year, the so called simply titled, Engineer’s Cup. Maybe Ralph should have hired an engineer himself but he was in too much of a rush. He had a couple of friends, who he had grown up with, who were so called engineers but they were mere rookies and were more like minor military minds who would be called on when war came, which it never would, so they just remained on call, barely trained, spending their time either getting high and chasing women in the simulations or else they would be drinking, chasing women out in the ‘real’ world. Then spending all of the next day barely functioning, hung over, mulling around base pretending to prepare for the war that would never come, playing stupid pranks on each other. All in all having someone like that with him would be questionably maybe barely better than just using his ship’s autopilot. It was the most advanced available on the market
and completely updated with all of the latest and greatest upgrades both official and semi illegally, unofficial. Still it was no match for the fluidity of a true master engineer incorporated mindlessly into a ship’s computer flowing thru space and time at almost no speed. Engineer’s were the real rock and roll stars on the planet called New Kiev as well as, truth be told, most other places that human beings occupied. And the beautiful Oksana was the ultimate rock and roll star, partying with other celebrities constantly, her and the stunning Kateryna making out and fondling each other in front of the cameras everywhere they went, driving men and women across the planet absolutely insane, but somehow at all times pushing the envelope of what it meant to be an engineer. If you told the average person that she was a machine herself they wouldn’t even blink and just saying something like, “Ok. Now it makes sense.” Ralph, letting his thoughts wander into Oksana land as they always did, abruptly brought them back to the here and now as he was notified by the ship’s computer that they were now in range of the Captain’s weaponry capabilities. As he frequently did, didn’t, have a plan Ralph wondered what to do. He sent a request thru to the other ship after waiting for a few minutes for them to make first contact but there was no answer sent back. Slowly, very slowly, he inched forwards, until he had finally docked his vessel on to the Captain’s own vessel which was about three hundred times larger but still not a large ship in the grand scheme of things as far as space ships went. Ralph entered and after a few minutes realized that no one was on board. If he was an engineer he could have attempted to override Oksana’s security codes and then from there banned them from re-entering noticing as he had that there was another escape pod missing. They were probably out investigating the alien vessel. Ralph didn’t know if he should wait or head out for the anomaly. He came to the conclusion, correctly, that he needed both a larger ship and an engineer, so he waited patiently, going thru different things that he would say and how the scenario would all play out from there. --------
Part 8 - Love
Oksana stood in the shower stunned. The young man, the alien who wasn’t that young, had silently entered and was staring at her as water rained down on her breathtakingly exquisite body, dripping down her breasts, her stomach, her bare vagina, her beautiful long legs, down her feet, down to the floor, then down the drain. He stood there like a king smiling as he undid his cloak and exposed his perfectly shaped penis, rock hard, pulsating with life, throbbing with a desire that hadn’t been satisfied in centuries. Her body reacted instantly, fire running thru her senses, more alive and aware than she had
ever been before. She was afraid. He was now running his hand up and down staring at her in a way that she had never been looked at before. She wanted to strike him down with her fist or give him a quick kick to the groin but instead she just stayed where she was, fighting the urge to grab him maybe and to do to him what she had never thought to do to a man before. Her body vibrated with an absolute intensity that she was using all of her willpower to calm and overcome. She finally came at him, violently at first, almost ripping his long beautiful hair off of his head, thrusting her tongue into his mouth. He continued to play with himself, harder now, and she put her leg behind his, pushing him with all her might sending him falling to the floor his head bouncing off the tiled floor. He looked around bewildered his penis standing erect in the air and she mounted him then, gently putting him inside of her. She pleasured herself, gyrating and moving like a demoness possessed in awe of her own power, empowered, screaming out to the universe at the top of her lungs. Then it happened, his semen started gushing into her, endlessly, and she came at exactly the same time, then a second, then a third time, shaking, unable to stand, then resigned to just hold him as the shower continued to rain hot water down, falling asleep minutes later as they continued to hold each other tightly as if the world would end if they didn’t. Later they awoke. They looked at each other and she immediately moved her hand down his chest and gripped his penis in her hand. He attempted to rise but she pushed him back down feeling his cock slowly begin to rise. She turned over and pushed his beautiful member deep into her insanely perfect ass. She liked how it felt and she rubbed her vagina cumming so intensely that she thought she was surely going to die, tasting her fingers with her mouth realizing how good she tasted, then touching herself once more cumming almost instantly. They spent the rest of the afternoon orgasming over and over and over again making love a million different ways each time somehow better than the last, more poetic, more meaningful, as a testament to a higher power, magnetism, love even, moving from room to room on the ship laughing, joyous, celebrating love and ecstasy, happy finally, so happy. -------
Part 9 - Hypnotism
Ralph sat reclined back in his chair sipping a cup of coffee watching as the pod approached the ‘Laughing Dolphin'. He still had no idea as to what he was going to say, he had a few scenarios roughly planned out but his mind kept mixing them up, playing one against the other, unsure of the best strategy. He was a little nervous truth be told. The pod was now docking and it would only be a matter of minutes until he was joined in the control room by the Captain, Oksana, or even aliens. He had no idea of course. The captain knew what Ralph's ship looked like because Ralph had a made a point of convincing him to watch one of his stupid, “This is how I made my ship - the Razor Bird”, videos. He immediately tried to radio Oksana but she wasn't answering his call. You could say that the normally reasonably calm captain was a little stupefied or something of the sort but no matter how you might word it, you would be understating how perturbed he felt, thinking Ralph dead, having seen his ship ripped apart at the hands of the anomaly and also examining the wreckage knowing that Ralph was indeed aboard his ship when it exploded. His first thought was that the god damned alien had resurrected Ralph just first hearing about the possibility of such a thing only a day earlier. The Captain had spent the twenty minute journey over extremely pissed off because Oksana had announced at the last minute that she didn't feel like accompanying him. Her stomach was uneasy. He didn't like the way she looked at the alien, did he have a name?, she had obviously been brainwashed by him, the unconquerable Oksana was like a lost puppy dog her eyes fully wide open following the aliens every movement completely mesmerized. It was all so sick it made his stomach turn and he wanted to vomit. The captain knew a lot about manipulating people and it was painfully obvious to him that he was in the presence of a true master of the art form. (Something like an 8th. or 9th. level. It only went up to 7. The Captain had been tested to the 3rd. but he disagreed with the testing methods feeling that it discriminated against certain personality types and he considered himself at least at the fifth level if not possibly even higher.) He half admired the alien and wanted to learn from him but because of his own fascination for Oksana his emotions were starting to swell up like a giant tsunami and he was about to walk into the control room and just press the button that would blow the Alien’s ship into oblivion. Everybody knew that Oksana had never liked men being a woman who preferred the fairer sex. The Captain was going to be the man to finally conquer her, owning her forever in the process. He had been trying to worm his way into her head for years and
this god damned alien just basically uses some sort of magic or advanced technology to work his way into her and steal her mind, her willpower now undoubtedly her body as well. He shouldn’t have left her alone. He had abandoned her. When the Alien’s hypnosis wore off she would be angry at him for not staying to protect her at her darkest hour. She would never forgive him. He had wanted to blow up their ship but he now realized the type of control that had been forced upon her and it brought about in him some sense of higher purpose. He would always love Oksana and he would find a way somehow to wrest her mind from this evil manipulator, who was maybe even posing as an alien to fool them and steal the anomaly from under his grasp. 4,685 years old? Come on. The Captain was not an easy fellow to fool. With so many furious thoughts running thru his over intelligent brain the Captain walked into the control room having totally forgotten that Ralph’s ship, the poorly titled, ‘RazorBird’ had somehow impossibly arrived and docked at his own ship which he had named aptly,’The Smiling Dolphin.’ a testament to his own playful and jubilant personality. Well it wasn’t Ralph the observant Captain thought as he pulled his gun out and aimed it squarely at his head, long blond hair flowing gracefully down his neck. The stranger just sat there silently his feet propped up on the Captain’s own chair which absolutely no one was allowed to touch, for any reason. Who is this guy, thought the Captain immediately, he’s even better looking than me or the god damned so called Alien. The Captain was literally on the verge of losing it. Finally he just screamed, “WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU AND GET YOUR FUCKING SHOES OFF OF MY CHAIR YOU SICK GIRLY LOOKING BASTARD!!” Ralph just looked at him blankly, soaking it in, sometimes really enjoying watch the Captain lose it. He thought about pretending he was deaf and faking some sign language but then decided to speak, “My name is Oskar, you must be the Captain, good to meet you, Ralph has told me so much about you, I am an intelligence officer and Ralph was working closely with us, I see that things haven’t quite gone according to plan here. Yes we’ve been tracking your progress. What can you tell me about this other spaceship you’ve apparently captured?” Under normal circumstances the Captain may not have been fooled by Ralph’s story. Maybe he would have. It was a lot more believable really than say, Ralph explaining to the Captain how he had resurrected himself into someone else’s cloned body. The Captain was in panic mode. His beautiful soulmate to be Oksana was about to be brutally raped by a sick pervert pretending to be a god damned Alien of all things who was going to steal everything from him, Oksana, the endless riches contained in the
anomaly, who knew how far this sicko would go. It suddenly occurred to the Captain that he would probably threaten to kill him unless he agreed to sign over his massive fortune as well. This is how these master manipulators, these hypnotists worked. They were never satisfied. He probably went from one planet to the next in his ridiculous spaceship stealing everything from everyone ruining peoples lives and tearing their spirits apart. The Captain felt a heightened level of anger and paranoia that few have felt before. “So let me get this straight.”, Ralph said. Ralph knew better than anyone perhaps just how weird and wacky the Captain could get given to dwell on things that he didn’t agree with or understand, things that thwarted his own poorly planned misadventures. Ralph however being in love with Oksana as well, was being more brought into the Captain’s emotional tornado than being able to find the ability to avoid it, and stay on the sidelines. “He’s pretending to be an alien? And he’s hypnotized Oksana?” Then, “No, no, this is such a top secret case that only I know about it. That’s why I had to use Ralph’s spaceship.” --------
Part 10 - Hostage?
They had actually traveled out to the alien vessel a little earlier but couldn't figure out how to get in. Ralph after having been a little angry and worried decided that he didn't care anymore, that Oksana was probably just sleeping, or something, but OK regardless and if she wasn't they would obviously just have to wait anyways. So he did his best to try and calm the Captain as he kept considering seriously doing something reckless and entirely irrational. The Captain by now had basically decided that Oksana was obviously being turned into a reptile being akin to a hollywood production and was now lost to the world of the living forever. He had attempted to reach her dozens of times. Panic in his voice, absolutely hysterical, tears being summoned up, now and again, pouring down his face. The Captain could be a drama queen Ralph concluded. What if this guy was really an Alien? His ship from what Ralph knew of spacecraft, yes the universe was a large place, did look pretty alien. His story did seem pretty consistent with what alien conspiracists like Ralph basically believed about alien history, not that that really meant anything. What if this anomaly was the key to an ancient alien civilization forever on the run from those like the alien on the ship only a couple of kilometres away from them? Sitting alone lost in his thoughts Ralph knew that he must work to protect the so called Naysayers as the captain called the rebellious alien race that had been chased for thousands of years, slated for annihilation. Something about
it all stirred something in him that went way beyond what he should have felt about a bunch of seemingly random events that stood before him, looming now, calling him to action. Late that afternoon Oksana had finally called them back. The Captain not mentioning Oskar to her, she should have known already if she was actually taking the time to do her job, which she wasn't. He was mad with her but then realizing again the level of manipulation that was taking place redirected his anger back towards the so called alien who had fooled him into leaving Oksana alone. His own knowledge of manipulation probably rendered him somewhat safe from the alien's charm. He was however a little afraid of being in his presence again knowing how won over he was the last time he was near him. He begged and pleaded for Oksana to come back but alas hypnotised as she was, even more obvious now, she refused to. She was down with an alien flu and couldn’t risk having the Captain get it because it was a lot more harmful to men and if he felt sick he would need to get immunized by the alien immediately. The Captain demanded to be let on board the alien vessel but in the end there was nothing he could do and he would just have to pace around his room all night drinking whisky going insane with insane thoughts that made his blood boil over like an insane volcano pouring out destroying the living landscape. Ralph wondered how the captain functioned without dying of a heart attack. They were presently now sending precious dark matter over to the damaged spaceship. The Captain feeling like this was some sort of hostage situation and that all he could was comply. The plan that Oksana put forth was to travel thru the anomaly the next day in two ships but the Captain had told her that he would refuse them dark matter unless they agreed to only take only one vessel. Ralph thought to himself that having two vessels would probably be a lot safer but in the end he had no say of course and the Captain still hadn’t revealed his presence maybe thinking to hide him away somewhere on board using him as a secret weapon later? (Hopefully not.) Ralph didn't know. Obviously they wouldn't be taking the alien's vessel because it wasn’t big enough to house them all and they were probably not accustomed to his food as well, but still it all didn’t sit well with him. It was a lot safer vehicle. It was invisible until they finally shot it down having to kill off Ralph in the process just to find it.
He realized that this alien being somehow knew how to enter the anomaly and if he didn’t then they would all surely die so he must be alien, or on second thought maybe not, because who really knew what the anomaly was and if it had anything to do at all with aliens. They would find out in the morning. He thought more about some of the things that the alien had told the captain. He wondered about what Oksana was doing. Maybe the Captain was right. Maybe she was getting the crap banged out of her by an alien. It kind of started to turn Ralph on just thinking about it. God he hoped he didn’t clone himself into a gay male. He had been spending a lot of time staring at himself. Nothing against gay people but he wanted to try his hand at women for a while especially considering that at age 22 he had not been with one yet. In the end he fell asleep realizing as he usually did that he didn’t really care and that everything, like his mom used to always say, would work out for the best. ----------
Part 11 - Into the Unknown
They stood before the great anomaly, that great precipice of life or death. Ralph had already perished here once before. Not without somehow being deeply affected by the experience. He remembered being stuck outside of the anomaly, his ship unable to enter, his own body buzzing, like he was having a seizure of sorts, feeling like he was being read and his fate was somehow being slowly judged. Not only that, he thought, but also it was like a transmission of sorts, a sharing of energy which maybe he wasn’t advanced enough to read but somehow it had still placed a permanent effect on the energy field that made up who he was. His so called soul that Ralph had managed to somehow beam back down to New Kiev after his ship exploded. Oksana had seemed a little weird. Lost maybe. She did look extremely happy. Maybe that was part of the brainwashing and Ralph was wondering if he was to be brainwashed as well or whatever. Maybe he would ask Eden, yes the Alien had a name, (albeit a name that raised even more suspicion in the minds of Ralph and the clever Captain), to put the Captain under the same treatment that he had given to Oksana. The Captain of course given to becoming extremely grumpy when things weren’t going his way and to say that things weren’t exactly going his way presently was a little bit of an understatement. Ralph thought it a little bit strange that no one questioned his top secret spy identity that he had literally thrown together at the last minute. There was a lot going on of course. Too much to think about actually. He thought he might get some sort of positive
reaction from Oksana on his new looks but she barely looked at him when they met and had been following Eden, the alien, around, like a lost little duckling or something. The Captain was right it was a little bit weird. Eden and Oksana were presently inputed mentally into the ship’s computer trying to gain access to the code that would apparently open up the anomaly. Maybe they wouldn’t be able to Ralph thought, that would be great, then he could just go home, realizing, as soon as he thought that, that he needed to enter the anomaly as well. Something about what he knew but didn’t know. It was more than just a feeling. A calling? He knew if he attempted to turn away from this all he would probably be driven insane. Literally. It was getting a little late and Oksana and Eden had been hard at work all day when they finally came offline and announced that cracking the anomaly might actually take a few days. Eden walked behind Oksana’s chair and the Captain stood up suddenly to Ralph’s amusement probably thinking that Eden was going to choke Oksana but instead he started to massage her shoulders in a manner that was to Ralph, a little erotic. They must realize how angry the Captain is Ralph thought and maybe want to tone it down a bit for the sake of their own safety but they both seemed entirely oblivious. After a little discussion Oksana and Eden announced that they were exhausted and were going to sleep. Ralph asked if he could have a go at the software that Eden had brought over and after much discussion it was finally decided that it wouldn’t do any harm even though the best that Ralph would be able to manage would be in just guessing numbers that were impossibly long with the chance of being successful, some one in trillions, considering he was unfamiliar with the program and not an engineer unable to access all of the ship’s considerable resources to put towards the task at the same time. The Captain at one point saying hilariously, “I wish Ralph was here. He might be able to figure it all out!” Eden answering back once more explaining how foreign this software would be for even the most brilliant minds, trying to stay out of an argument with the Captain about just how smart Ralph was. Which the Captain managed to drag on for a considerable amount of time. “No. I think you’re not listening to me and ignoring how intelligent Ralph was.” Maybe aliens didn’t get jealous because Eden was seemingly unable to realize that the Captain was going to keep arguing with almost everything he said. He was being so patient with the Captain like the mother of a spoiled 6 year old might be explaining why he couldn’t have candy for supper. Ralph was frankly getting sick with both of them and he kept rolling his eyes and looking over at Oksana but she seemed to be oblivious to the irony of it all only making eye contact with him once, giving him a ‘stop looking at me
creep’ look. Finally, finally, Oksana and Eden left the control room heading down the hallway to Oksana’s chambers. Ralph looked over at the Captain, who looked back at him disgusted, and then the Captain shouted down the hallway, “Oksana we need to talk to you for a minute. Something urgent has come up. It will only take a second.” to which Oksana replied that she was too tired and that they could talk about it tomorrow. To which the Captain volleyed back, “This is of the highest order of urgency Oksana!.”. To which she ignored replying to as her and her alien loverboy entered her chambers to do who knew what. Ralph and the Captain spoke for awhile wondering how to un manipulate Oksana, then had a few drinks, the Captain showing him his quarter’s and turning on his screen revealing to Ralph that he had secret cameras to Oksana’s room the two of them tuning into to catch the last five minutes of Oksana and Eden having intercourse then watching Oksana ball her eyes out after being held tight by the obviously manipulative Eden. The Captain was so right. Ralph still didn’t read into at the same level that the Captain did but he did agree it was all a little unfair because Eden being both alien and thousands of years old could probably steal any woman’s heart. Ralph left the Captain to stew and cry. Walking into the control room he turned on the alien decryption program, lazily, typed in a 360 digit number, a number he didn’t know he knew until he started typing it, watching the anomaly’s protection be deactivated for the next hour, then maneuvered the ship thru to the other side, too tired to do anything but just park on the inside of the anomaly, noticing that they were in empty space still and nothing had really changed. --------
Chapter 12 - Eden
Eden had crawled out of Oksana’s bed a few minutes earlier and was now staring up at the display a little shocked. No one else was up yet. They were inside of the anomaly now. Unless they were brought in by whatever force had built this place, maybe even, the Naysayers, that rebellious faction of beings like himself who had risen up and almost overthrown a balance of power that was a million years old, then he had really no clue as to what was going on. Maybe Oskar (who was really Ralph but no one had figured that out yet) had cracked it he thought. Then no. There was obviously some force that had brought them in here for whatever reason.
Eden wondered if he should kill the humans. That would probably be about protocol right now. Then he realized that he found them too amusing especially Oksana but even the grumpy Captain and that dimwit who called himself Oskar as well. Maybe a thousand years alone in outer space following humans around had made him want a little company. He was wondering if he was going to become someone who sympathized with the Naysayers himself. The thought worried him a little as he realized that he had made quite a number of independent decisions recently that may not in the end reflect well upon his duty to the great balance and the way things were. To the hierarchy that governed his ancient race. However, independence, of thought and action, weren't values that were totally frowned on by the people of his civilization. It was a gamble though because in the end it would have to be proved that him making the decisions he had had higher meaning and benefited the greater good. For one thing, it would have taken weeks for a proper force to arrive from their closest base. By that time, if he had waited, a number of things could have happened. The most likely being of course that the anomaly would just be moved, lost for another thousand years, given that amount of time noticing the amount of attention that was being placed upon it. He could have destroyed the Captain's ship but for 1. it was this crew that brought the anomaly to his own attention in the first place and 2. if the Captains ship perished the Captain as an epilogue to his last great adventure would probably have a newsreel sent to the world’s major media outlets announcing the anomaly to the world (he did). Which would be problematic. Also it was clearly understood that killing human beings was always to be only considered if there were absolutely no other options available. The humans could live, that wasn’t a problem but alas he must watch them closely and make sure that they never rejoin humanity again. He could also erase their memories but that didn’t always work, meaning it only worked temporarily sometimes. Logically he decided everything made sense and he wanted to go lay next to Oksana again, a creature so beautiful that she would fit right in with the most beautiful women of his race, all of them cloned to perfection. It did all present it to himself perfectly he thought. He was sick of being a Watcher forced to languish out alone in the middle of nowhere all because he had spent the decades that comprised his allocated educative period doing drugs and thinking about philosophy rather than actually getting the credentials to pursue a more interesting career than being a ‘Watcher’ (There were many.) His ambition may have been misplaced or it may have had deeper roots in it’s own inherent genius demanding to find expression in the physical universe. Eden thought the latter.
He knew he should have transmitted the situation in to the closest base command but he hadn’t. He knew he wasn’t trusted by his superiors to pursue this sort of independent course of action. They may have given the go ahead anyways. And he hadn’t expected to be captured. If a force did arrive from base command they may have just decided to blow the anomaly up. Eden was a curious creature. He had failed his entrance exams into the program because of his inherent chaotic nature but his uncle had some influence and there were few other careers open to him. Being a watcher did have a small amount of opportunity attached with is as it was at least within the realm of Space Command and not just a mere service position on one of the thousands of home worlds. Which also facilitated his training as an engineer as humans called them. People who were trained to communicate and morph into the minds of the spaceships themselves, necessary for light speed travel through the stars amongst other things. And after his thousand year tour of duty was over he would have many exciting career prospects available to him with good salaries attached to most of them. Which he probably blew by taking a bunch of humans into the anomaly without notifying anyone. Eden had the personality of a gambler and a dreamer, which is why he had failed the entrance exams to the Watchers program, even though his uncle had coached him on doing well knowing the test inside and out. This time, he thought, everything was going to work out and the payout would be huge. This adventure would probably turn him into a storybook like character, a hero of epic proportion, whose tale would fan out with great effect across the habited galaxies. Just as he thought that, the Captain walked into the control room and sat beside him. Truth be told the Captain made him feel a little uneasy. “Listen I know you have brainwashed Oksana. It’s even obvious to that almost brain dead spy Oskar. Before I can let this journey continue, this is my ship, I must ask you to deprogram her. It’s obvious that we need her fully functioning as she is specially programmed to interact with this vessel. And me and her were about to have something going on before you stole her mind and threw her willpower somewhere out into the emptiness. I stress that for the success of this mission we must all try to treat everyone aboard as being equal.” Eden just looked back at him a little dumbfounded thinking, that’s why you’ve been so unfriendly and confrontational. Then out loud, “Trust me my friend I have not brainwashed your attractive looking friend and I also did not know that the two of you had anything going on as she told me you didn’t”.
“Listen.” said the Captain. “I know you’re aware of Mason’s famous Manipulation Method or at least something very similar. I have met master’s of the art form and I am very highly trained myself. I know what’s going on here. It’s extremely obvious.” Just then something shook the ship and the conversation ended.
