Tips for an Alcohol-Safe Holiday Season S
Excessive drinking can ruin holiday celebrations. If you drink, drink in moderation. You can enjoy the party and remember the evening. Impairment begins with the first drink, so never drive after drinking. Make music, games and socializing the focus of parties, not alcohol. Don't let young people under age 21 have access to alcohol. Instruct bartenders to stop serving alcohol to impaired guests.

Stop Underage Drinking
1,239 people died in alcohol-related crashes in Florida in 2005. 92 of the drinking drivers in these fatal crashes were under the legal drinking age of 21. Alcohol kills more young people than all illegal drugs combined. Learn more about preventing underage drinking and impaired driving by visiting the TAC web site www.tampatac.com.

Designated Drivers Save Lives
Designated drivers have probably saved nearly 50,000 lives and spared many more thousands of people from suffering injury from drunk driving. Each year over 73,000,000 Americans either serve as a designated driver or are driven home by one. A designated driver helps friends and family avoid embarrassment, keep their driver’s licenses, avoid fines, stay out of jail, and prevent senseless injury and death. The non-drinker has a legitimate and respected role at a social function where alcohol is served. There is no stigma to abstaining because the designated driver is considered an important member of the group. Being a designated driver can also help legitimize a personal choice not to drink. The designated driver approach prevents driving under any level of impairment because that person consumes no alcohol. It doesn't require a driver or passenger to determine if a person is too impaired to drive.

Community Traffic Safety Team Program
The Community Traffic Safety Team Program is a multi-disciplined, Federal, State, and Local Government endorsed program developed to reduce the number of traffic crashes that occur on Florida roadways. The program was created in response to federal legislation (the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1990), which calls for local participation and solutions to traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities on local roadways. Our membership consists of professionals in four disciplines: Law Enforcement, Engineering, Emergency Services, and Education. We possess the resources and skills to directly impact the epidemic problems that Florida faces on our roadways. Armed with carefully developed missions, goals and objectives, the Committees undertake projects and activities and serve as a resource to any and all communities, local government agencies, and roadway users to assist in the reduction of traffic crashes and the related injuries and fatalities on our roadways. For more information, contact: Florida Department of Transportation, District 7 11201 N. McKinley Drive Tampa, FL 33612 (813) 975-6256 http://www.ctst.org
