Catalog Description: Human aging examined emphasizing biological and nonpathological physiological changes and their effects on the functioning of elders. Course Summary: In this 14-week course, participants will gain an understanding of the impact of biologic aging on human function. You will: Examine theories of biologic aging, Learn how aging impacts physiology and function Differentiate between aging and disease Explore how these changes impact the life of older adult and those who interact with them Each participant will create a document detailing these changes and the impact as it relates to their profession or interest in aging. This process will provide the learner with a resource for working with older adults going forward. Learning Goal: Participants will be able to describe how normal aging impacts physiologic function and interpret how those changes might alter the life of an older adult and/or those who work and interact with them. Learning Objectives: After this course, participants will be able to: Identify key age related changes in physiology ● Explain how the physiologic changes of aging impact function ● Differentiate between age related changes and diseases common to older adults ● Propose how assist the older adult in managing those functional changes ● Propose how to alter work/lifestyle/environment to accommodate functional changes Pre-requisites: Biology 4 or Anatomy and Physiology 9, 10 or 19-20, or permission.

DiGiovanna, AG. (2000). Human Aging: Biological Perspectives, 2nd edition. McGraw-Hill Higher Education, ISBN: 0-07-292691-0. While this textbook may seem dated it is the best foundation textbook I have found—and because it’s older, it’s cheaper!
Additional Required Readings: Each week there will be a selection of required reading from your textbook and a variety of supplementary readings from journals and from web sites that are reputable. Students are expected to access these through electronic reserve, the internet, or by links provided within the course on Bb. Please notify the instructor as soon as you discover links, electronic journals, or electronic reserve materials that do not work. Course Expectations: Participants should: ● Plan to spend at least 6-8 hours a week on the course. ● Read introductory comments for each lesson. ● Read the assigned readings, text, articles or websites for each lesson. ● Post a response to the question posed for discussion by the date assigned. ● Participate actively in all discussions. Respond meaningfully to at least two colleagues’ posts per discussion question. Ask questions of your colleagues! ● Complete an update of your Physiology/Function/Implications chart on a weekly basis as indicated in Instructional Sequence chart. ● Complete all assignments by the dates indicated. Discussion Board Expectations: Please participate in the online discussions for each of the assignments by answering the questions posed and then extending the conversation. Part of this expectation will involve responding to at least two other colleague's post each week (remember - there is no "back of the classroom" in online discussion). Each lesson includes one or two questioins that require outside reading and reflective posts to the Discussion Board. As a learning community, dialogue and discourse in this course are expected to be thoughtful, supportive and respectful. Please keep your posts relevant to the topic under review. Posts should not be lengthy. Brief and succinct posts are best, with quotes or citations from readings and lessons included, as appropriate. Whenever possible, conclude your post with a question that will encourage others to reply and keep the discussion going. If you disagree with a post or
want to challenge a premise, please do so in a manner that respects divergent opinions and continues to expand and extend the discussion. Learner Support: Consider contacting the Writing Center or UVM Library resources for assistance with writing or resources. Class Communication: I will use the Announcements box on the course home page to communicate reminders, updates and special interests topics. I will also be posting examples of geriatric humor and poetry to use for some of our reflections/discussions as well. Response Turnaround Time: Please use the Discussion Board for content discussions and email for personal communications with the instructor. I do work at my “day job” Monday through Friday from 8 to 4:30 so will most likely be responding in the evening. Expect a 12-24 hour turnaround on email and discussion postings during the week and a 24-36 hour turnaround on weekends/holidays. Technical Assistance Using Blackboard: Post your question to the TECH HELP forum in the Discussion Board for technical support questions. Please expect a 1/2 day turn around time during the week on technical issues.

Students are expected to visit the course multiple times per week. Excused absences for religious holidays: Students have the right to practice the religion of their choice. Each semester students should submit in writing to their instructors by the end of the second full week of classes their documented religious holiday schedule for the semester. Faculty must permit students who miss work for the purpose of religious observance to make up this work. Contributions in Class:
Participants are expected to review all links posted in the lessons and take an active role in class discussions. Participation in discussion forum topics
must be timely (within each week’s assignments) with multiple postings per week anticipated.
