Understanding CAT 6A
Equipment, design and planning, and installation practices for CAT 6A projects are all significantly different from previous generation structured cabling systems. Use this guide to gain a better understanding of these unique requirements, which will in turn help you accurately bid jobs and shorten installation time. The final result will be a high-performance system that supports today’s requirements and provides a smooth migration path toward 10G network performance.
The Category 6A (Augmented Category 6) standard addresses the performance demands of 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GBASE-T). Several organizations detail aspects of the standard, but all define 6A performance as up to 500 MHz and a maximum distance of 100 meters (328 feet). CAT 6A is backward compatible with CAT 6, 5e, 5, and 3 performance and applications.
Organization: TIA (Telecommunications Industry Association) Standard: 568-C.2 (replaces 568-B.2-10) Defines: Performance requirements for CAT 6A channels, permanent links, and components
Organization: ISO (International Standards Organization) Standard: 11801; Class EA Specification Defines: Class EA cabling and component performance requirements for customer premises. ISO equivalent of CAT 6A; commonly specified outside of North America
Organization: IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Standard: 802.3an
