I learned not only the Latin names of useful species but the families
to which they belonged. I further memorized the orders into which
families are clustered, the superorders to which orders belong, and
the even larger divisions between monocots and dicots (the flowering
plants) and the pre-angiosperms like ferns, ginkgo, and pines. My
constant guide in this effort was Alan Kapular and Olafur Brentmars
Coevolutionary Structure for the Plant Kingdom. With its help I was able to
categorize and file away thousands of plant names in my head.
I also undertook a project that reflects how pathetic my social life
was at the time. I tracked down a copy of Steven Facciolas magnificent
Cornucopia: A Sourcebook of Edible Plants, a remarkable compendium of
three thousand species of edible plants fully cross-indexed with nursery
and seed company sources. I wanted to systematically comb through
this to increase my knowledge of hardy perennial food plants. I spent
weekend nights at the Smith College Science Library with my copy
of Cornucopia and the librarys reference materials (primarily Liberty
Hyde Baileys Hortus Third) to determine which species profiled in
Cornucopia were cold-hardy and perennial.
To organize my thoughts, I went through Cornucopia superorder
by superorder and kept my notes accordingly. I learned a number of
interesting things as a result. For example, the Magnolia superorder
(now reclassed as the Magnoliales but with largely the same cast of
characters) contains many trees and shrubs with aromatic leaves used
as bay leaves (including bay laurel, the official bay leaf ), as well
as trees and shrubs that have exclusive relationships with certain
butterflies whose larvae can eat only leaves from that particular species. These woody plants are from different families, and without an
understanding of their higher-level taxonomic relationships, I would
never have made that connection. Studying plants at the superorder
level was part of my recovery from my brain injuries and introduced
a lifelong love of classification. It also formed the foundation of the
plant matrices I developed for Edible Forest Gardens, which were to fill
many years of my life to come.
