As always, we have been very busy in September. The long course season within the Wide Bay region started with the Cotton Tree and Noosa Swim Meets. Two of our senior swimmer Kareena Lee and Chelsea Babec headed to WA with coach Barry to compete at the Australian Short Course Championships and achieved some great results. We also had a club pack presentation and a fundraiser event. Finally, some more great news: our club obtained a silver status in the Go Club PB Program, a national swimming club standard. This is our best results so far within this program. Well done to all!

We hope you all enjoy this issue and we welcome your feedback!

Cotton Tree Swim Meet
8 September 2012
Six Makos attended the first long course meet of the season at Cotton Tree.  Coach Michael Gibson joined them for the warm up before heading off to work.  Everyone had a great day and swam some great times.  In fact, the Makos swimmers improved incredibly — EVERY swim resulted in a PB when compared to the swimmers’ Long Course seed times!

Jayden Soanes picked up a swag of medals, including a gold medal and Pool Record in the 11 yrs 100m breaststroke.  He also took home 3 silver medals in the 100m butterfly, 100m backstroke and 100m freestyle, and a bronze in the 200m IM and narrowly missed taking home the 11yrs Age Champion title. Cameron Bertolla took almost 7 seconds off his 50m butterfly time and more than 8 seconds off his 50m freestyle and 50m breaststroke times.  Alice Hermanns also swam PBs in all four strokes of her 50m events, including an 8 second improvement in her 50m backstroke and 6 seconds in her 50m breaststroke.

Cerissa Boddington achieved some great first times in her 100m events. Michaela Bird took a massive 18 second off her 100m butterfly and nearly 15 seconds off her 200m IM.  She also made a 4 second PB in her 100m freestyle. Phoebe Shapland took more than 6 seconds off her 100m freestyle time and 4 seconds off her 100m backstroke. Congratulations to all the Makos swimmers, you did a fantastic job! A big thank you should go to Kylie for the update and the great photos.

Australian Short Course Championships
12-16 September
Our senior swimmers Kareena Lee and Chelsea Babec headed to Western Australia to compete at the 2012 Energy Australia Short Course Swimming Championships. The championships was held at the Challenge Stadium in Perth between12 and 16 September.  It provided an excellent opportunity for the Makos girls to go head-to-head with Australia’s best swimmers. Kareena competed in the Women's Open 800m, 400m and 1500m freestyle and in the Women's Open 200m butterfly.  Chelsea swam the Women's Open 50m 100m and 200m breaststroke events. Both of the girls put on some excellent swims. On Day 1 Chelsea swam fast and was first reserve for the women’s 50m breaststroke semis.

On Day 2 Kareena swam very strongly in the women’s 800 m freestyle, claiming the bronze medal in a time of 8:33.11, taking more than seven seconds off her personal best time! Kareena also got second place in the women’s 1500m freestyle final, in a time of 16:24.60 — almost four second faster than her seed time!  Fantastic results, girls, congratulations again! Big thank you should also go to coach Barry Kime for preparing the swimmers for the championships.

2012 GO Club PB Award
We are very pleased to inform you that Mountain Creek Mooloolaba Swimming Club obtained a silver status in the GO Club BP Program. The GO Club PB Program is the national swimming club standard that recognises and rewards swimming clubs by measuring their performance across five key areas (memberships, administration, activities, coaching and officiating, marketing and promotion). Depending on the level achieved, the benefits of participating in the GO Club PB include recognition, evaluation of strength and weaknesses, rewards pack, eligibility for cash and equipment grants, access to an appearance from a member of the Australian Swim Team and/or a mentor coach, etc. More details about the GO Club PB are available on the Swimming Queensland website. This is our best result so far within the program. Thank you to all of our contributing members, swimmers, coaches, parents, officials and volunteers, without your input the club wouldn’t have achieved this recognition and reward.
