CSE Diary for 26.12.2012
The benchmark index stayed in the green to reach the highest
level since 14th Nov 2012 despite weak turnover haunting the
bourse. Turnover, today marginally improved to LKR242mn
compared with the 5 month low experienced on Monday as the
an onboard deal in John Keells Holdings boosted turnover
contributing 49% of the day’s turnover. Investor interest in the bluechip counters led by Ceylon Tobacco, Dialog, Ceylon Guardian
and Bukit Darah allowed the index to reach a 2 week high gain of
46 points.
Except in a bull market, the festive season records a sharp dip in
turnover as investor attention switches direction. However, buying
interest in selected counters seem to be continuing as the ASPI
charting an upward trend reaching a 1month high today.
Foreigners are the leading buyers even in this dull market with
today’s foreign activity contributing as high as 44% of the turnover
with a net foreign inflow of LKR119mn.
John Keells Holdings gathered investor attention today as an onboard parcel of 550k shares of the counter was dealt at LKR218.0.
Further buying interest pushed the day’s volume in the counter to
693k shares as the counter to close with a gain of 0.5% at LKR218.0.
Commercial Bank and the palm oil giant, Bukit Darah too recorded
on-board deals bringing the counters to the top turnover list. Two
deals of 172k and 78k shares of the former counter were traded at

38.5

LKR103.0 the latter saw a 15k block trade at LKR690.0.
Speculative play was evident in PC House and Free Lanka Capital
Holdings. The former registered an onboard block of 995k shares at
LKR5.3 and closed at the same price while the latter recorded a
number of on-board deals, the counter closed among the gainers
at LKR2.4 (4.4%).
Buying interest continued to remain strong in Distilleries, the hard
liquor manufacturer, as the counter reached a 52-week high price
of LKR166.0 though on low volume. The counter closed with a gain
of 1.8% at LKR165.9.
European Stocks Decline Amid U.S. Budget Concern: European
stocks retreated for a second straight day as volume tumbled
before the Christmas holiday and concern grew U.S. policy makers
won’t meet a year- end budget deadline. The Stoxx Europe 600
Index fell 0.1% to 280.6 at 1:40 p.m. London time following a
shortened day of trading.
Oil Rises on Lawmakers’ Fiscal Cliff Meeting, Stockpile Report: Oil
rose in New York for the first time in three days as President Barack
Obama and the U.S. Congress prepared to assemble to discuss a
budget solution to meet a year-end deadline. Brent oil for February

settlement on the London-based ICE Futures Europe exchange
advanced as much as 60 cents, or 0.6%, to USD109.40 a barrel.

 Sri Lanka buying refined petroleum from Vietnam: Sri Lanka is buying refined products from State-run
Vietnam Oil and Gas group (PetroVietnam) favourable terms and is also getting credit facilities,
petroleum minister Susil Premajayantha said. "It is a term contract so it is below the spot market prices,"
he said. "We are getting three months credit." Premayantha said the purchases have been going on for
some time and stemmed from an agreement signed following a visit by President Truong Tan Sang last
year. At the time Sri Lanka struck a deal to buy diesel from PetroVietnam's Singapore based trading arm.
Sri Lanka's state-run petroleum refinery, which is more suited processing Iranian crude has had trouble
with other types after it became more difficult to import oil from the country following US led sanctions.

 Prosperity index shows gains: Central Bank: Sri Lanka’s prosperity has increased 4.1% in 2011 improving
on two earlier years, according to an index which tracks well-being, economic infrastructure and the
business climate, the Central Bank said. Sri Lanka Prosperity Index has risen 4.1% to 60.6 point in 2011
showing a steady increase from 2009 when it was 56.5, the Central Bank said. Sri Lanka’s Western
Province was ranked first, followed by the Southern and Central Provinces but disparities between
indices were declining. Uva and Eastern provinces fared the worst. Sri Lanka’s Northern Province, which
had emerged from a 30p-year war in 2009, had shown the highest growth rate moving to 6th position
from 9th. "Although the prosperity levels in all provinces have continuously increased over the years, the
relative position of some provinces declined due to greater improvements observed in other provinces,"
the Central Bank said. In 2011 the Western Province index showed a growth rate of 3.5% with GDP,
reduction in poor households, vehicle ownership, telephone density and schools with English medium
classes and computer facilities.

 Chinese support to develop coconut industry: The Chinese government has agreed to provide assistance
to develop Sri Lanka’s coconut industry, according to the Ministry of Coconut Development and Janatha
Estate Development. During a meeting with the Minister of Coconut Development and Janatha Estate
Development Jagath Pushpakumara at the Ministry on Friday, the Chinese Ambassador to Colombo Wu
Jianghao has agreed to offer assistance to develop the country’s coconut-based products and enhance
the exports of coconut-based products to China. The discussion between the Minister and the
Ambassador has covered the steps to be taken to improve trading activities pertaining to coconut
production sector while narrowing the trading gap between the two countries. Minister Pushpakumara
has apprised the Chinese Ambassador of the problems Sri Lankan exporters of coconut based products
face when exporting their products to China and requested the envoy to consider extending the tax
exemptions, granted to other Asian countries, to Sri Lankan exporters as well.

Global News
 Britain feels strain as austerity bites: Millions of Britons are facing a bleak holiday season worried about
falling incomes and how to repay debt, as economic reports raise questions about whether the country's
austerity measures can restore growth. A survey released Monday showed 43% of households expect their
finances to deteriorate in 2013, compared with only 24% who expect an improvement. "The vast majority of
households anticipate that their financial well-being will either worsen or stagnate next year," said Tim
Moore, senior economist at financial data provider Markit, which compiled the report. "With three-quarters
of all households not expecting any improvement in their finances, the latest survey suggests that domestic
consumer demand will remain under pressure in the near term -- especially since inflation perceptions remain
elevated and job insecurities are prevalent across the U.K."

 Singapore November Industrial Output Recovers on Pharmaceuticals: Singapore’s industrial production
rose for the first time in four months in November as manufacturers produced more pharmaceuticals,
countering a slump in electronics. Manufacturing gained 3.1% from a year earlier after a revised 5.1% drop in
October, the Economic Development Board said in a report today. The median of 13 economists surveyed by
Bloomberg News was for a 4.8% increase. Data from the US and China have shown signs of recovery in the
world’s largest economies, which may boost demand for Singapore’s goods. The Southeast Asian nation this
month concluded negotiations on a free-trade agreement with the European Union, deepening access to
overseas markets. “Demand from the U.S., China and Europe will improve, but at the earliest in the second
half of 2013,” Michael Wan, a Singapore-based analyst at Credit Suisse Group AG, said before the report.
“There are still many structural issues to be resolved, for instance, the fiscal cliff in the U.S.,” he said,
referring to a blend of tax increases and spending cuts that will take effect Jan. 1 if lawmakers don’t forge a
budget deal.

 Russian sovereign wealth fund, SBI plan USD2 bn investment: Russian sovereign wealth fund RDIF and State
Bank of India plan to set up a $ 2 billion investment consortium aimed at promoting mutual investments
between the two countries. The USD10 bn-Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) is Russia’s sovereign
wealth fund. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for setting up the consortium would be signed later
today between RDIF and SBI, as part of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s official visit to India. “RDIF and
State Bank of India would each invest up to USD1 bn in the proposed co-investment consortium,” RDIF Chief
Executive Officer Kirill Dmitriev told PTI. The consortium can make investments in India and Russia. “Basically
we are creating this platform that has capital allocated for high return projects in interesting sectors, with
synergy between India and Russia,” Dmitriev said. Once the agreement is in place, RDIF and SBI would team
up to facilitate access to long-term capital in Russia and India besides promoting mutual investments. The
emphasis would be on projects geared towards higher purchasing power of the population, creation of value
addition in the extraction and processing of natural resources as well as development of manufacturing
businesses and service sector companies.

 Thailand’s Export Growth Accelerates as Global Outlook Improves: Thailand’s export growth quickened to a
15-month high in November as factories returned to full capacity after last year’s floods and global demand
improved. Overseas sales rose 26.9% last month from a year earlier after climbing a previously reported
15.6% in October, the Ministry of Commerce said in Bangkok today. The median estimate in a Bloomberg
News survey of 12 economists was 26.4%. Signs that the global economy is strengthening have brightened
the outlook for Asian exporters. Thailand’s monetary authority last month held the benchmark interest rate
and Governor has said shipments of items from rice to electronics are expected to recover in the first half of
next year and “really grow” in the second half.
