JCI SINGAPORE NATIONAL PRESIDENT NEW YEAR MESSAGE 2013 Fellow Senators, JCI Chapter leaders and JCI Members A Happy New Year to All. In 2012, we survived the Eurozone Crisis, a Mayan Dooms Day scare, and averted what was touted the biggest potential policy error by United States government, known as the fiscal cliff. While these very high profile events are happening, you may have missed out significant news in Junior Chamber International. Allow me to highlight a few: 1. 2012 JCI World President, Bertolt Daems recognized one LOM in each quarter for executing IMPACT projects advancing any of the eight UNMDGs, using the Active Citizen Framework. 2. A Resolution was passed at the JCI Global Partnership Summit 27th Jul 2012, New York, for NOMs to identify and implement a need in our own country within the framework of the UNMDGs. 3. JCI Training receives a facelift to align training to fulfill the Mission and Vision of JCI. Coming online in Jan 2013. 4. Chiara Milani became JCI World President 2013, spoke strongly for Individual Social Responsibility (ISR) within the Active Citizen Framework. 5. December designated as Active Citizen Day, saw many Organizations rallying to lend strength to a common message. National

A common theme surrounds these key events: Active Citizenship. It is not only a deliberate and distinct rebranding of JCI globally, it is also a return to the roots of the movement in St. Louis, by Henry Giessenbier. As a National Organization, JCI Singapore must rediscover its role in the community, to be the representative voice of Active Citizenship. We must endeavour to make create a positive impact in our own backyard. Let us focus our efforts in 2013, to train and equip ourselves, connect with potential partners, understand our communitys needs and create more IMPACT projects. Everyone has a role to play. New members would do well to attend JCI Official Training: JCI Achieve and JCI Impact, to understand better the JCI Mission and Vision, as well as the Active Citizen Framework. JCI Singapore LOM leaders would be the key influencers to increase membership, connecting with their community and implement more IMPACT projects. Junior Chamber International Singapore

JCI Senators are a valuable asset to JCI Singapore. Its my sincere hope that Senators would contribute their constructive advice, connections and other resources to help the younger JCI members in growing the franchise value of JCI. One of the initiatives that would require inputs of Past National Presidents and esteemed JCI Senators is the Strategic Planning Committee. Headed by NIPP Sen Ace Chng, we hope your valuable inputs will set us on the right course for the next few years. As far as the National Board, we are committed to four goals in 2013: a. Improve recognition synonymous with Active Citizenship among Youths aged 18-40, potential government and civil partners b. To equip members and leaders with skills & knowledge necessary to do meaningful projects that create positive change c. To tighten administrative standards in NOMs and LOMs, thereby setting good standards of practice, and consequently improve the quality of service to LOMs and its members d. To provide more opportunities for chapters to recruit members, widen the channels for recruitment. Our first JCI Singapore Board of Directors meeting takes place on 02 Jan 2013. We will officially endorse a Plan of Action discussed at the Plenary with all the Chapter Presidents on 29th December 2012. In my most sincere hope that we can call this OUR Plan of Action, and ask for the support of our JCI Senators for your help to make this a reality. 2012 was also a water shed year of Successions. US President Barack Obama and Taiwan President Ma Ying-Jeou, were endorsed for a second term, Vladimir Putin returned as President in Russia, France and Germany elected their new Presidents, the new Big 18 succeeded the 17th CCP in China and South Korea elected their first woman President. As I assume the heavy mantle of JCI Singapore National President, I seek your forgiveness for mistakes that may be made along the way, but my heart is true to one cause: To make JCI Singapore shine as a beacon of light for Active Citizenship. To an IMPACTFUL 2013. Best Regards, Brendan Yong 2013 National President JCI Singapore
